Help Low space storage problem - Tried standard issues

Version: 2.2
Network: o2

Issue:

Been having a lot of problems with low storage on my phone.

I currently have about 8 apps installed on my phone other than the stock ones. I've tried clearing the cache, deleting data, and even when I sort my apps by size, the largest is 5mb (chompSMS). I've checked the mail app and that's not huge, neither is contacts. I cannot see what is taking up so much space constantly.

Is this a faulty phone, or is there something I've not tried?

If you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks.

If you are running 2.2 you can move alot of your apps to the SD card and free up space on your phone, check out this thread on how to do it,

Thanks for the quick reply, but I don't think the apps are the problem, or if it is I have no idea which ones.

The largest according to the phone is 4.5mb and only have 8 additional apps to the stock ones. Yet I'm still using 90% of my internal storage.

It's something HTC did with the /data partition, it's a joke compared to other branded phones. If you're still on 2.1 then you're SOL, I had this problem constantly before flashing a 2.2 custom rom. Even then I have about 60 apps mostly on my SD card now and sitll have about 18MB left on internal. My Motorolas has much larger internal space even when it's 256MB (Desire is 512MB).

One of the most annoying downsides of the Desire.

Go to settings/applications/manage applications click on each item listed one after the other & see if clear cache is a light, if it is press it.
Also launch the internet browser & press menu/more/settings scroll down & click each option that starts off clear, as in clear cookies etc.
Then reboot your phone this will free up all available internal memory.

Tried that, hasn't helped apparently.

Tried cleaning each cache. I'm really confused as to what is taking up the space...

Currently I'm on 127mb of 147mb. Is that correct?

Right, I've tried everything. Cleaning cache, clearing data, I've moved all my custom apps to the SD Card using the trick in the first reply and now I have less than 10mb remaining and can't install new apps.

I've had a look through nearly all my apps, including the ones that came with the phone to try and see a problem, but there is nothing there. If I sort all apps by size, there is only 3 over 1mb!

Is there anyway I can see exactly what is in my internal storage because I'm getting incredibly frustrating.

There are a lot of apps at the bottom of my list that are 0.00B (which seems impossible). Could this be it, or is this normal? I'd say nearly 90% of the apps on my phone are under 100kb.

I don't really want to resort to a factory reset, because then I'll lose all my apps and the like.

Any help is greatly appreciated, because this is a great phone, just a niggly problem.

Please tell me how you have managed this?

i understand there is a way of rooting them to SD. is this the only way?

No I haven't rooted and none of my apps are on SD yet as I'm still (im)patiently waiting for 2.2.

I just regularly try and manage the space as explained in this old post http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/123787-internal-storage-space-management.html

It does sound as if there is a problem with 2.2 whereby you can't see what is taking up the space. If the apps aren't using it then what is?

I have the same problem. I only have 4 apps downloaded and only have 14mb of internal space left. For some reason when I list my apps that are using tons of space, my Mail app is using 80.49mb Anyone know the reason for such a high amount ? Apologies I am new to the smart phone world!!

See I've heard of this problem, it's when you store lots and lots of emails on your phone without realising.

I have checked this and it's not the problem. None of my apps are even over 2mb, let alone 80mb.

If you are on 2.2 you can see what is taking up the space.
Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All
Press menu then sort by size.

The mail app was causing the problem for me. I had asked it to download all my emails though ~ 300. I then re-thought if i needed all of them, so now i have chosen that the phone only downloads the 40 most recent. I did this by removing the mail account, to clear all data on it. Then i re-added and chose from the options. This returned loads of space to me.

Hope this helps

This sounds very similar to an issue i am having with my email. ITs currently over 50MB and i have deleted all emails from it (2 accounts) but it is still showing at the same size. Are you saying this was the case for you and you had to delete all the data and re-set up your accounts to free up the space?
Did you delete the accounts from the email app itself or did you 'clear data' in the apps management screen?

Thanks

Nathan

How do you make it download only the 40 most recent emails??
