Google Maps question

Got a question about the Fascinate. I use the Google Navigation like all of us Droid users and while I do know that you can download that, I am wondering how the voice search works.

For instance, on the home screen I use the hold the search button and say "Navigate to <store>" and it automatically loads google navigation and kicks in with the local addresses to that <store> based on my present location. Because of Bing being forced, would this still work as in, will holding the search button load Bing or Google Maps?

So for anyone who's got a running Fascinate right now, for doing this kind of voice command, will it load Bing Maps or Google Navigation like all the other droids. I figure voice commands defaulted for Bing wont work even after installing Google Navigation which I assume would require Google to work.

Damn I hope this works or I gotta pass on it.

Isn't the voice search going to be Google? Due to some sort of copyright on the voice recognition? What I heard anyway and the search bar will be Bing?

No, voice search is Bing. I tried it myself and can confirm this. BTW, Bing blows. I tried a voice search for "Chinese food." It took forever, but actually got the search term correct, then the result was the Woot page...

Bing ruins this phone, its so Ghetto. Who uses Bing anyway?? Epic failure on Samsung and VZW. And I know most here are hoping to root and remove Bing but for the common user that buy this phone, I personally think it will kill the value of it in the long run. I hope there is a simple fix.

As a "common user" of this phone, I really cannot see any big problem with Bing pre-installed on the phone. As I have said it before, Verizon has installed Bing on my BlackBerry. I never use it and it does not bother me a bit. All I have to do is to move it into a folder and forget about it. Now the search bar on the home page may or may not be movable, we will have to wait and see, but again it is no big deal, I just ignore it. Instead, I set my default home page on my web browser to Google and do my search from there. :)

A little apples and oranges. Android is a Google OS, Blackberry OS has nothing to do with Google. People use Android, in part, because of the Google experience. So removing most of that Google experience from an Android phone has a greater impact, and doing the same on a BB phone is not really the same , IMO ..

Then you have never used google voice search, which is amazing. Bing just doesn't seem to work as well.

Not exactly. Although the OS is created by Google, I wouldn't call it a Google experience. It is more of a "Google + Samsung + Verizon" experience. It is like a tripod that you cannot do without one of the three legs. :)

No I have not. But if I am searching the web, I can simply go to google.com. Being able to bring up the search results by voice command is nice, but you still have to click to go to the web site that you want to go to. Right?

Now, if you are talking about voice search on Google Navigation, I have done that with VZ Navigator and it is very handy. I am planning to keep VZ Navigator and I am planning to install Google Navigation as well. I suspect you can launch the Google Navigation from the icon and still be able to do voice command. If I am right about this, the only thing that we lose is the "Search" soft key (i.e. we cannot do what we want to do by using the soft key, but we can still do it by launching the app itself).

I will prove my theory in a few days and let you know. :)

Actually i think you're wrong. I agree I am going to root and some people hate bing. But for the everyday person who doesnt use voice search they will have no problems with it. I know i use the google nav but im not gonna cry about bing and for other people who just want the phone to use as a phone and not as a gps they will not care IMO

Ive used google voice search and its not so great as you say. I mean i still use the browser when i want to check something out online its much easier to just type it in the browser then open the voice search and say it. But hey thats just me. Nobody is making you get the phone wait for the EVO look alike or something else if you dont like the fascinate.

Man, you are like a 1-string banjo here. If Bing doesn't bother you, fantastic, but then why must you keep replying the same way over and over without offering anything new? We get it. Bing doesn't bother you. You will root your phone anyway.

However, there are some people here who do not like Bing, DO like Google Voice search very much, and may not want to root the phone. It is OK for us to express our opinion I think without 40 replies in the vein of "root it or don't get this phone".

It is not unreasonable to expect a Google experience on an Android phone...

Where once have i said you must root? Maybe if you read a little you see i say there are many other options out and that will be coming out soon that you can check out nobody makes anyone get this phone because its out right now and you feel you need it. Maybe you should wait and something will come out that makes you happy and does everything you want it to do but to complain about one feature on a phone isnt going to change the fact that it is on the phone.

LOL. Really, again? ok about 41 times now..

It's odd and I only responded because you seem to very helpful in other posts regarding other subjects. But for some reason you seem obligated to respond each and every time about this subject the same way.

In any case, we know we can download Navigation and use it, we know it some installed with a Google Voice Search app - per the user guide - so at least there are some parts of the experience available, if not defaulted ..

Ok well you can say what you want but you must like this phone or you wouldnt be on here talking about it. So what exactly is it that you like about this phone? In today's day and age we have so many choices that alot of these phones are nearly identical so idk what you expect you just seem like you are in a hurry for a phone and since this one will be out soon are complaining about something on it that no matter how much you do its not going to change whether its said 41 times as you say.

useing the phone right now i hate bing it totaly ruins the phone. everything else is amazing. the 384mb ram is kinda annoying if you get too much going on it gets a little laggy. as far as google search and google maps. i installed google maps. bt when you go into it and do a search it will pull stuff up example mcdonalds. it will give you the route driving instructions bt no voice turn by turn. it just sits there and thinks and then stops. you can try it again and nothing. and bing will not give turn by turn. so the only thing left to use is vz navigator. great program. bt i shouldnt have to pay for navigation. super annoying. i try vlingo bt it wasnt letting the phone go to sleep. so i uninstalled. so far battery life is good easily get day and half. and im a pretty heavy user.

Breathe. It's OK...

I like many things about this phone. Just because people don't like an aspect of a phone, doesn't mean they don't still want the phone, or like it overall.

There is no perfect phone. Each has issues. This one's problem is Bing for me (and some others). It doesn't mean we don't want the phone. It's just that it would be helpful if you suggested useful information other than your tired, reiterated line about this.

LoL, same guy that left an idiotic comment to me on the other thread with the new YouTube videos.

I wouldn't pay much more attention to anything he/she posts.
