First Time Rooter, Already Borked

So, I think I rooted my phone, and I hope correctly.
What should my next step be, pray tell?
I see some folks have a rom manager. Recommendations? I also see praise for the Fresh stuff. What is the most stable version?
I'm looking to wireless tether and extend my battery life. Besides those two desires, I'm pretty well satisfied with the CDMA Hero, as is, though I still haven't really gotten used to the key-entry methodology, know what I mean?

There is just SO MUCH out here, I'm a bit lost.

Thanks to those replying. I appreciate it!
Yours, in trepidation, permazorch.

So, I was completely stuck because I couldn't make myself try and change anything EXCEPT by using the command line (In the Beginning was The Command Line). That was a MISTAKE.

I had to get it through my thick head that I could reboot into recovery by powering off and holding the home button down while repowering back on.
I made a nandroid backup. I wiped the data. I could NOT wipe the dalvik. When I tried, phone rebutted with, ERROR: RUN 'WIPE DALVIK' VIA ADB!
I flashed the rom (fresh 2.4) and all seems well.

@roudykreationz: I've just gone through this minor ordeal, and I'd be happy to try and help you. What exact phone are you using, and where are you in the process of rooting?

I am having trouble rooting as well. It is driving me crazy and I want to give up but I really need to root it and remove some of the apps cell south put on the phone. My phone hasn't been acting right and was told I need a minimum amount of memory on the phone for it to work properly. I have deleted all of the apps I could and still don't have enough memory. Every time I think I am ready to root, the htc sync won't connect to my phone and I am back to square one. HELP !!!!!!!!!!
