Root First! Perm Root?

Yes, now all we need is Cyanogen to announce support for it with CM6 - they have a Galaxy S experimental out!

Samsung Galaxy S Experimental Mod - CyanogenMod Forum

I am sure people will be building ROM's from the existing leaked Galaxy S Froyo ROM that is out there, but it may be a while till Wimax and the FFC are supported. HDMI and 4G are the next two things slated for CM6.1 for the EVO.

Looking at the procedure, what I see lacking is an engineering bootloader (and/or S-OFF) and custom recovery image. So while the phone is rooted, it isn't necessarily jailbroken/unlocked completely. Looks like they're working on this...

Well, I'm encouraged at the simplicity of this root. Looks like the Epic is going to be as root-friendly as the Evo, which is a really good thing.

This sounds awesome but i had a couple questions.. once i root can i unroot or does permanent root mean no? and whats the difference between permanent and one click root? Thanks guys

They have nothing to do with each other. Permanent root means you don't lose root access after a reboot. One-click means someone has written a front-end program that allows a user to click a button, and behind the scenes, the phone is rooted for the user.

Yes, rooted phones can always be unrooted.

Is there a VERY BASIC page somewhere that explains the basic software system? How do you plug into it. (I'm used to a palm treo which had desktop software). I see all these commands for rooting/unrooting. Is there a software synch type program or file manager? Of do you do it in DOS? Please let me know if there is a basic primer somewhere.thanks!

Because XDA is where the real devs are.

Really? A chance at all the sites and devs working together and you want to pull a my team vs. your team? Fine but this is the only time: Where did first root come from? SDX Where did WORKING recovery come from? SDX Where did the first themed ROM come from? SDX

That's the last time I'm waggling my e-peen at you or anyone else. Let's just be happy we're all coming together to work towards a common goal without all the drama.

k?

Cool thank you very much for that info
Still not sure what root is better than others i know theres a few out there plus i have a mac so i might not be able to root yet.

I am confused, you say still not sure what root is better than others i know theres a few out there - I thought that root was root? as in when I log in to root on my linux computer its the same thing but a different user account as it would be

is root on android a modified rom or whatever that overwrites the normal android files because there is nothing in these phones for allowing root by default? - as in did it get removed or blocked with a password thats random or something as one would block an admin account or root account

usually you never run as root, I am a unix geek that moved to linux (sorta) and one of the #1 things you never ever did was run as root - you would log in as root and do stuff but never ever would you ever stay as root for anything other then doing what you had to do at the time, so why is there a way to make this permanent or is that just to allow you to log in as root again and again but actually isnt running as root?

Does rooting a phone clear off all the apps and contacts and such? Sorry, but I am very new to this, and only really want to do it so I can remove all the apps I don't want.

TIA
No, rooting will not delete anything.
Getting root or rooting your phone is the process of modifying the operating system on your device to grant you complete control over it. This means you can overcome limitations that the carriers and manufacturers put on your phone, extend system functionality, and even upgrade it to a custom flavor of Android.
The name root comes from the Linux operating system world, where the most privileged user on the system (otherwise known as Administrator on Windows) is called root.
You have access to alter any system files, use themes, change boot images, delete annoying stock apps, such as Sprint

I've been trying to make this work for 2 days now.

When I go to install the drivers, I keep having problems.

CDC Abstract Control Model (ACM) just hangs at Installing driver software, as does S3C6410 Android ADB.

I have USB Debugging enabled, I plug the phone into my laptop (Windows 7 - 64-bit), and the driver will try and install. I have tried to install the drivers from the suggested download, yet I can't get anywhere. The icon tells me that my device is ready to use, yet the window still tells me "Installing driver software..."

I do have PDANet installed from my previous phone (Hero). Would this be causing this issue?

When I try and run the batch file, naturally, I get a message telling me that the device cannot be found.

Any suggestions?

I suppose I will try to not have USB debugging enabled and try uninstalling the drivers then try installing them again with the phone connected.
