Root Best Verizon Phone to Root

Hi all,

This may not be the appropriate forum for this, but my wife has an upgrade available and I currently have a rooted Droid. We have Verizon and I'd like to make a smart decision about which phone to upgrade her line to...It seems like the Droid X has the best hardware, but with the Fuse issue with the bootloader, is this phone ever going to be as capable as an HTC Droid Incredible, just for an example? Maybe the Incredible is the best Verizon phone, taking root abilities into account...I just don't and I'm looking for opinions from all the experts that know far more about this than me...Do you think the X will overcome the issues outstanding right now?

For what it's worth, the Droid X is starting to be cracked open:

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned -- Engadget

The original Motorola Droid obviously has one of the more vibrant development communities right now, but that will presumably change as the phone ages, and you probably don't want to be investing in another one right now anyway. If you can wait a bit to see where things go with the X (and Droid 2), it might be worth it, but otherwise the Incredible seems like a solid choice.

Just as what's said above, the droid1 is the best verizon phone to root. Just like the nexus one, the droid doesn't have any custom user interface like dx and dinc. So it was basically made to be rooted and load custom roms and all that good stuff, unlike droid2 and droid x. Along with Nexus One, the Droid is a great developer phone.
Since they discontinued it, you won't be able to get it but that answers your question, its the best vzw phone to root.

After doing a little research, I think the new Samsung Fascinate is the way I'll likely go. After all, with Motorola and Verizon doing their best to make rooting as difficult as possible, I'd rather just go with a company that doesn't seem to mind at all that the development community exists...Plus, it looks like Pete is going to develop a ROM for it and that never hurts either!

I'm thinking about getting the Fascinate as well, depending on how I like it in real life. The one thing that is a real turn off is the lack of a notification LED. It sound stupid, but the inconvenience of not having that feature is a big red flag for me that might actually keep me from buying the phone.

The Fascinate really doesn't have an LED? That's pretty ridiculous. I thought it was one of those "required" functions of an Android phone.

No, it really doesn't sound stupid...Hell, I like having the notification pulse different colors in CM6 and it's one of the things I miss running Liquid's ROM right now. But like Liquid's ROM, sometimes if the upgrade is serious enough, you just have to let some things go! Like you vincent, I'll likely test it out in real life and see, but I do know this: Pete was stoked when he saw it and has already developed a tool kit for it on another carrier's version of the phone (and said he can't wait for it to come to Verizon). That's enough for alot of people on this forum to look seriously at that phone.

It's preloaded with Bing, but Google Services can easily be put on it once it's rooted. Root isn't something that's hard to come by these days lol. If I was staying with VZW, I'd be getting the Fascinate....

hmmm.. really? I think therein is the rub.

this whole thread rasies the intersting issue I see continually unfolding.

Droid phone makers trying to lockdown rooting. Devs really working on rooting a phone like the D1 then maybe jumping ship to a next phone. We spend months of time rooting and tweaking only to get a short lifecycle of rooting bonuses on our phones only to have the devs leave our phones - D1 in this case - behind and move on to try and root and theme the next phone. Will this, again, then happen in 6-8 more months. It is kind of dawning on me that with the end of the D1 lifecycle, not much incentive to make D1 roms and themes and apps for a dev. So, we will invariably, when/if they figure a way to continue rooting phones, to have to do it all over and over and over and over again with short phone lifecycles and in the end, get it all tweaked and setup just to have the devs move on.

I am locked into my D1 for 2 years as per VZW and I am cool with that.. but by then, I will have to do it all over again IF the devs follow the next hot phone and IF they can root it. I just wonder if there is an end game here and how many phones I want to root and tweak and setup and if devs want to keep exploiting root and making roms and themes and phone makers keep trying to lock out root abilities ....

feel my point?

That's true. Technology in these phones are continuously evolving these days. This is where I'll probably draw the line for a while... Samsung Dual-Core Orion Processors. After they release a phone with Dual Core processors, I'd probably stick with that phone until something innovative comes out. Phones are only but so big, so only but so much can be done to it, unless something innovative happens, which is what I'll be waiting for. But as for now, these Galaxy S phones definitely got my attention.
