Turn your Droid X into a Media Server

Hey... this may not be new, buts its new to me and I wanted to share...

Awesome little app I stumbled on today called "Twonky Server" that does a great job of turning your DX into a media server.

Load your DX up with music/vids/pix and then stream them to a laptop, 360, ps3, etc. I just watched an avi file of Iron Man 2 with my wife and kids by streaming it from my DX thru my PS3 over my homes wifi and into my big screen plasma... no lag other that about a 30 second start time as the buffers load.

From what I get DLNA does the opposite, kind of - I want to be able to play media via my wireless router<PC. Basically play the avi from the PC on my X, then I would have the option to use the new HDMI app to view on the TV (not that I don't already have the PC 2nd HDMI out running to the TV) - I can browse anything that is shared on the router I'm connected to using DLNA, I've yet to use the "share" feature so I would assume it would do the same, but backwards. But I've already confused my self after I installed the leak DLNA stayed there but another app Media Share came about. Is there a difference? Maybe the "real" froyo was supposed to delete the DLNA and replace it with Media share, again confusing myself - but yes, I'm pretty sure DLNA would do the same, haven't tried this app though.

dnla works either way, assuming the other member of the pair is also dlna compliant.

Yes, DLNA goes both ways, (just like yo momma ) as long as the other device actually supports it.

DLNA sort of sucks, though. I haven't found a decent way of making it work with WinXP, (I know I can, I just haven't been able to get it working) and I really haven't found any decent applications to play my computer's videos on my DX over WiFi or 3G. Orb works, but as usual, its quality is absolute shit. Gmote works sometimes, but it could also use quite an overhaul.

DLNA would be great if they allowed it to be more versatile with codecs and allowed servers to push ui elements. It's only halfway useful in it's current iteration.

From what I see most apps do what the phone is capable of doing on it's own.....if you can find out where in the setting or preferences, etc to find them.

Many apps just make it easy to find what your phone is capable of doing already.
