Root Best fit ROM and Kernel?

I'm at a point where i'm ready to try rooting my EVO for the first time. I have read a lot and have a basic understanding of what needs to be done. It was my intention on using the first 2.2 exploit with the videos but just saw the unrEVOked3 one click rooting deal there and when it comes back up i may try it out.

My questions are i'm sure what every other new person to rooting asks, What are the best ROM and Kernels for me? At the moment i use LauncherPro and widgetlocker and really like them both, i would probably like to continue using them. What i want out of rooting is to get rid of the Sprint bloat wear, increase battery life, and WiFi tethering along with obviously speeding up my already fast EVO. I want to keep all of my radios working and not lose any functionality of my phone (camera, 4g etc..) Frame rate cap would also be nice to get rid of.

I guess I'm looking for suggestions on ROM's and Kernels that can accomplish what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the link, I am familiar with it. I was actually looking for opinions on some good ROMS and\or Kernels to try that would fit what i was looking for and still be stable. With so much knowledge and so many different set-ups I could only asume that some Rooted soul out there had the same setup i was looking for.

I say you try a couple ROM-Kernel combinations and stay with the one that you and your phone feel more confortable with. Its been proven that not all Evos react the same with the same combination so what works for me may make your phone unstable.

This happens more often with the Kernels. So if your familiar with XDA star digging and do some reading for possible candidates. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, I like your idea and will try it.

Some of the most popular are Fresh and BakedSnacks ROM... they use sense and have all the functionality you want to retain from the Stock ROM

as for kernels Kings and Netarchys are the most popular and stable ones, the both have the FPS cap fix, allow overclocking, improve performance, and some versions have tweaks to improve battery life

[KERNEL] [2.6.32.15] [HAVS][BFS][BFQ][FPS][OC][UV] KiNgxKernel #8/#8 "Now it's Fixed"

[GPL][Kernel]netarchy-toastmod, Stable: 4.1.8, Beta: 4.1.9.1 w/HAVS
Damage Control also has a large following, and is friendly with multiple kernels options.

I'm using Cyanogen Mod 6 with Snap 7.5 (8.2 was giving me some problems) with the Smooth-REVO Theme and I am absolutely loving it.

Mod: [ROM][WTF][BBQ] CyanogenMod-6 - No Sense at ALL! - V6.0.0 (08/28/2010) - xda-developers
Kernel: [Kernel] CM6-Snapv8.2 [UUV/OC/nHAVS] SNAPpaper v2 and Splash Screens available now! - xda-developers
Theme: [MOD] Smooth-Mods for Sense and Manup's theme 8/29/10 CM6 Version! - xda-developers

I am a little jealous of the battery life from the unreleased HTC kernel that Fresh is running right now, but I can't stand Sense, and I don't use any of the widgets anyways.

Once HTC pushes that update and release the kernel I'm sure the battery saving features will be implemented into snap and other kernels (are there even any other kernels for CM6?) and I'm willing to wait.

My battery life on CM6 is better than stock anyways, the new kernel will just be a bonus.

I am using Virus Series 1.0 with king's BFS #8 and my phone is running like a champ.

I was using DC up until last week. It is a great ROM and is super stable but I don't think it is being developed anymore.

OP states he doesn't want to lose functionality. With CM6 you lose 4G, hdmi and fm.

I dont know if many people care about this, i didnt really mind sense when i was using CM6, but i did miss the ability to sync contacts with facebook... and the HTC dialer
There's a whole 'nother segment that hates the Sense dialer and Contacts setup, preferring AOSP. Either way is fine with me, but both make me shrug. I also miss Facebook sync in AOSP. I like Sense's smart dial feature, but I don't get why the history doesn't stamp date, time and length of call. There's a call history app in the launcher that includes that info, but why would I want to go into the launcher and scroll to a separate app when there's already a shortcut to the history available from all screens? Why can't Sense contacts can't be sorted by last name? Another guy here is annoyed that the Sense dialer has no BT toggle. I guess you can't please everyone, but I think that either or both could have gotten closer to making everyone happy.

I use fresh 3.2 with netarchy, have launcher pro since i like that dock bar and am unwilling to get rid of the htc dialer. i also use swype as my keyboard. i have no use for bluetooth since i dont want to be one of those people who always have the bluetooth in their ear, like at the gym or in the mall, i understand it makes some people feel important, if i ever need hands free, i will just put in my headset.

I also have been using LauncherPro and also like the task bar, swype is my keyboard of choice. I use a bluetooth speaker phone in my vehicle and like the idea of switching mid conversation from the dialer.

You know, there are other purposes for bluetooth.

ie: data transfer, playing media & hands free link to the car.

As Mr. Obvious as this is. Is there a book at Barnes and Nobles... Rooting for dummies that will give great descriptions like you guys/gals have been giving about the pro's and cons of each ROM and kernel or combinations thereof, I too am waiting on 3.21 but if there is a link either here in this forum or XDA that is a basic what you get vs lose would be freakin awesome! I realize that these are all about personal choices I just want the basics for the roms and or kernels so I can have an informed choice.

Thank you for your patience

Actually that's a great question and a good idea. A catalog as it were of the most popular ROM's and Kernels and what the pro's and con's are of them, maybe the compatibility of each?

When I flashed the new fresh-rom, I wanted to try a kernel that would fix the fps. I settled on netarchy. When I looked at which version, I found someone saying this version worked good with that rom: Revision 4.1.8-cfs edition
But then I saw the same thing that said fresh compatible: Revision 4.1.8-cfs edition - Fresh3 Compatible
So I used the fresh compatible one. I couldn't find anything that told the difference or which one would be better to use. Does anyone know. I would appreciate the help. The one I chose seems to be stable.
