Help Nothing seems to work that well

Hi All,

First post, shame it's a tad negative. Love the Desire, been waiting on it for months. Now I finally have it my initial awe has faded into disappointment.

When I'm away from home without a WiFi connection it seems like nothing works. You Tube, Last FM, eBay and worst of all any of the three different types of Twitter I have. Some of these apps are incredibly slow or others just give up. I've never been able to upload a picture via Twitter using any platform. Really annoying. Seems my Gmail isn't even notifying my anymore.. Have I done something? Is this linked to Orange's notoriously poor set up?

Will rooting my phone help? I'm already running out of space on my phone after downloading what I consider a fairly small number of apps. Why don't they save to, and run off, the SD card?

Fingers crossed this is all just me being daft..

Mine displays G and it's fine. For goodness sake mobile internet WILL NOT be as quick as your pc or as quick as the wi-fi connection. It's a convenience thing to grab some quick data and info not to use 24/7. If i can cope with G in my area you can't complain with 3G and 3G+. If i had them kind of signal i'd feel it lightning quick i'm sure and surely wouldn't complain

As far as I know (and going from the user manual) there is no 3G+ icon on the phone so I'm a bit confused.

WiFi (802.11g) will give you up to 54 Mb/s.
HSDPA (H icon) maxes out at 14 Mb/s

So the connection will be a bit slower but it tends to work reasonably well for me. Note the above are the maximums, you'll probably never hit them, certainly not for sustained periods. An H or 3G connection for me allows a usable browsing/Google maps experience.

Well the strange thing is that the brower is really good. It's Widgets I seem to have the problems with. I've read there have been problems with Twitter do to security reasons at their end. But Friendstream, Facebook and Gmail just seem to update sporadically.

Could it have anything to do with having the low storage icon?

Also is there a way to start using my SD Card to handle some of the space for apps? Not sure I want to root just yet.. see what Orange's 2.2 update is like first.. if it ever comes out.

Yes you should be able to. It sounds as if it may be to do with the Orange network as your experience isn't typical of a Desire user. I have seen threads about data connection problems with Orange so maybe have a look for those. Perhaps it just isn't connecting properly after you have left wi-fi?

I'm on T Mobile and I only get a G connection in my home area. Even on that I am successfully able to browse the web and check emails and Twitter etc. I wouldn't say it's painfully slow though.

I wouldn't even attempt to use Youtube, Last fm or mobile tv using a G connection as I know they won't work. However when I am in an area where I have a H connection I expect them to work perfectly and almost always they do. On a H connection the web speeds are super fast, by my standards anyway.

I very rarely see 3G on my phone (it's usually G or H) so I can't really say how fast that is. As far as I know 3G+ is the same as H so when you have that everything should work and work quickly.

Maybe contact Orange and make sure the phone has the correct APN settings?

Ah just seen your comment about the low storage icon! Yes it has everything to do with that. When that warning is visible none of the syncs will work. You need to get your storage space back up to 15mb and everything should start to work again.

2.2 will enable you to move apps to sd.

Right... thank you so much! Bye, bye Angry Birds Beta. Strange that they never had this SD capability before.. just makes sense. Be really good if I could delete the massive amounts of pointless stuff Orange put on. I mean why the hell can't you delete a demo of a game?!

Shame as Angry Birds is good :) I had to get rid of a load of stuff to fit it on mine. If you have Astro you can always back it up to sd first then it's readily available to reinstall when needed.

Here are some tips I posted a while back, for managing the storage space http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/123787-internal-storage-space-management.html

Sorry to keep asking, what comes with the HTC which is okay to delete? There are lots of things that I'm not sure what they do. For instance I have Facebook and Facebook Sense.. presume I want to keep Sense.

I'm enjoying that it's slightly less userfriendly than an iPhone as the payoff seems to be much more personalisation.. but it's confusing to start with.

If something was pre-installed on the phone then it won't let you delete it.

You shouldn't have any problems when on 3G+ however.......it is never that simple with Orange as their coverage is absolutly shocking

In terms of the widgets, some of them don't wore for me either. Friendstream never refreshes & news just doesn't work at all but after nearly 67 months of owner ship i have found things that are much better so it doesn't bother me anymore

You will get there mate and I can see that coming from an iPhone makes it a little daunting. In the long run though it will be the best move you made as its such a nicer experience and is easy to learn.

I presume you are running 2.1 as My Angry Birds went straight to the SD card.

Also you must have a fair few apps installed to max out your memory that quickly?

Another tip is to go into settings > applications > manage applications...In here you can delete the cache that each application stores which also takes away from your internal memory. Its a bit fiddly at first as you have to go through them all but after a while you get used to which ones take space and delete them regularly.

As was said above you cannot delete the inbuilt applications unless you root which I would leave for a while until you get familiar with Android.

Hmmm.. Facebook is now updating and my browser speed is great, but none of the twitter apps do anything, You Tube doesn't even load and Friendsteam is just pointless. If I'm getting fast browsing speed it's got to be something in the phone.. frustraiting.
twitter is borked by twitter, its not to do with the phone
friends steam is a htc product not android and its pointless when the only thing that works on it is facebook as the twitter mobile api is broken and you already have facebook

youtube works just fine for me and lastFM is only reliable on HSDPA/Wifi (its the case with all phones)

in most cases the issues you are reporting are because 3rd parties have broken stuff with their own interfaces and steaming audio uses loads of bandwidth, if you are in a high usage area then your speed is drastically reduced
