What makes the DROID laggy? Chime in.

Seems turning phone off, then turning it back on, makes it run smooth again....

* Pulling down the notifications bar when it has notifications in it... chop chop chop
* From the home screen, dragging up the menu from the bottom, usually doesn't respond immediately, and is choppy when scrolling through apps.


Tell me if you experience the same with your droid, or if maybe I just got a bad one?

Haven't experienced what you're experiencing and I'm running a different home environment too. But, I always power down and back up each morning. I also routinely clear cache to free up memory. Think of it like your home computer. I don't think you have a bad one. Just need to do some cleaning?

Maybe because the apps tab was designed to be "one-touch" and not "dragged"?

I think all of us experience at least SOME lag. I think its strictly software related and hopefully will be fixed with the upcoming update.......hopefully.

Try clearing your browser cache and history. I did this and it cleared up close to 10MB of space and now my Droid is much snappier.

Tough to tell why I get some lag, but I suspect part of it is background syncing, either with Exchange, Google, or email.

yeah mine lags a lot. I got rid of A. app killer cause pretty much everyones says you don't need it, but then my cell lagged more and more. Just put it back on and it is running again smooth for now.

Check your internal storage amount ??mb before you clear the cache

Clear the cache from every app you find with it.

Check your internal storage amount again. You should see a good increase in size of avalible space.

You should also see your phone speed up.

Is there a easy way of doing this. I'm kind of lost at the moment. might need to sleep on this.
right now I have 134mb left on the phone. 5gig left on sd.
I know i can go into each app through settings and clear cache, but that takes time and you need to know which one has a cache.
it would be nice if there was a app to clear caches.

There is an app that says it will do this. I cant recomend it as I have and will not use it. I dont want an app having that much control over the phone.

I have 150+ apps so I know it can take some time. Just write down which ones you find with cache and every few days pull out the list and do some clearing.

Good enough. I will have some time on my hand tomorrow. I will just go through them and do that. Thanks again. The lag is my only big complaint so far on the droid.

That is 11.02MB of more space, by just clearing 4 apps.

That is alot of space on limited space devices.

Mind explaining how clearing up "space" on the phone's internal flash memory can make it more responsive, when it's not down to mere MB left?

Unless it's severely low on storage (in which case it can be constantly deleting things to make room), it won't make a difference.

What does make a difference? The crap running in the background. Once again I will say that an application to manage running processes is 100% necessary. Do you need to kill everything running in the background? Of course not! Just take the time to learn what your programs are actually doing in the background.

There's guaranteed to be some stupid app that is updating at regular intervals, even frequently that is actually unnecessary because you're not opening it that often. THAT is the kind of app you want to kill when you're done using it...at least until the developer wakes up and allows specific options for updates, status checks, or refines the way the application does such things.

Still, even with that...I too find myself with lag on just about any menu related dragging...even typing text. I've never been able to pin it to just one application as it happens so rarely anymore, but I've decided that I don't ever like to leave large apps like the Browser or my Meridian running. The Market also seems to take up an unnecessarily large amount of memory (10mb+) for not needing to do anything in the background.

I have found that having apps that try to connect all at the same time for update purposes tends to make my phone super laggy.

Autostarts v1.2.1 Application for Android | Tools shows you what runs at startup, allowing you to disable those you do not want there, and aSpotCat (app by permission) v1.54 Application for Android | Tools lists apps by permission.

so im useing the moto droid and cant figure out how to get into all the apps on my phone to check the cache. i can get to settings,application but only shows apps i installed. looks like other people can get into the market app and clear its cache. what am i missing.

Just a cautionary heads-up, and I'd love for this to just be coincidence, but...

Last night I set my morning alarm for 9:00, and put my droid on the multimedia station. Then I remembered what I had read online last night about the cache clearing strategy in order to speed things up a bit. My phone has been sluggish lately opening Messaging and Contacts, and thought "what the heck, may as well give it a try."

After clearing the cache, I noticed significant speed results immediately. I placed my phone in the Multimedia station, and went to sleep.

At around 11:30am, I woke up naturally. In fact, I thought I was having a nightmare, that I still had my WinMo phone . I reach over to my droid, and turn on the screen. Though my digital clock widget said 11:30, my system clock in the notifications bar said 8:32am. I checked my alarms, and they were still checked off for 9:00am. I also had one email, which I read and archived, but the notification icon would not go away. I ended up soft-resetting the phone.

When it rebooted, my alarms were all unchecked, and I had 7 new emails. The clocks both had the proper time. And the speed boost from clearing the cache is still present.

I'm hoping that this was a freak accident, but if anyone knows what I did to cause this, please share. Thanks, and be careful!

For the record, I cleared the cache of every app that had one, and I did it manually, not through an app.

After I have thought about it more, it seems like a big PIA to have to go through and clear your cache just to make it run better. I would think Android would have accounted for this somehow.

I have had my clocks do that before and my alarm not going off even though it is set.

I was getting some sluggishness and lack of response - removing WeatherBug (which had an widget on the screen) made a world of difference for me. I switched to the Weather.com tool.
