back to school T-Mobile sale

Was talking with the T-mobile tech support rep (after learning the Vibrant does not support UMA to use wifi calling at home) and she told me about the upcoming back to school sale where many phones are free, and even better, adding an extra line is FREE till 2012. Not an extra $5/mo., free. Quite a few decent phones are available, too.
Very cool, thought I'd give you guys a heads up. I might even get a phone just to for a back-up.

I think it's a great idea to have a backup phone. I got a stupid cheap TracFone from Walmart...it was something like $12 with double minutes for life.

I couldnt even get the $5 add a line without changing my plan. It was cheaper to stay with the $9.99 add a line but for those who have new plans, the free add a line is great. Now if they would get rid of the ridiculous $18 activation fee. Thats bullshit.

BS was the perfect word. Activation and upgrade fees are a joke. Even verizon wireless has free activation every weekend on phones purchased online. Those fees are just another way to make extra cash.

Amen to that. I understand they're trying to recoup the lost profits on the devices themselves (90% of the time they lose money on them), but they make up for it on data plans and individual text fees (for those not on plans). What they should do is turn that $18 fee into a $10 credit towards a $25+ accessory, that way the sale of the accessory (at probably $2 cost to them) would make them nearly the same profit, while also satisfying the customer.

When I upgraded my tmo plan I paid the $18 activation fee and added my wife for 5 bucks! Didn't get the extra line for free. But I did get my unlimited data plan for 24.05 instead of 29.95, guess that counts, doesn't it?
