I was sending my dad an email as to what my New Eris Phone does. As I was writing it, I thought I would post it here. Maybe you guys can pick up something you didn't know... but more than likely I will find out another thing my phone to do that I never knew...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dad was asking me some questions about my phone today so I thought I would let you know all the things I have it set to do. I will also go over the good and bad of the phone. the capabilities right now are close to that of the IPHONE but with it working with an open application, The possibilities in the future will be greater than that of the IPHONE.IMHO

Basic
- Messaging
- Alarm Clock
- Phone Calls
- Pictures -has a 5 Mega Pixel Camera but no flash :(

Applications
- aCar - Keeps all info on my car and alerts me when it needs service
- Advanced Take Killer - Allows me to close applications running in the background so that it doesn't drain the battery (in my opinion these apps should close on their own. I consider this more of a band aid for the phone)
- Aldiko - Allows me to download the latest books for free and read them... not sure I remember how to read but it is cool nonetheless
- Anycut - Allows me to create shortcuts to one of my 6 home screens (This can be to websites, Contacts, or Applications)
- Calendar - I have this synced with my outlook calendar, windows calendar at home and gmail calendar. This also syncs with Facebook and notifies me of Birthdays.
- FxCamera - Allows me to add special effects and customization to Photos
- PicSay - Does the same as FX Camera but has some different options
- Gmote - Really cool app that allows me to use my phone as a remote control for my computer - useful when running slide shows, PowerPoint, or using the Computer as a TV
- Google Maps - Allows me to have a GPS location of where I am at and I can get directions to where I want to go - It will be better after December 11th when The 2.0 software upgrade is complete (free). Then it will give turn by turn voice directions (basically makes it a gamin)
-Mabilo Ringtones - Allows me to download free ringtones to set as notifications and alerts.
-IMUSIC - Allows me to download any song to my phone and save it.
-Pandora - Free Streaming Music
-PDF Viewer (does what it sounds like it does)
-Peep - This is a twitter App that I basically use for Brian Gregory's updates. It notifies me anytime he makes a post.
-Ringdroid - Allows me to cut down songs to make them ringtones
-Save MMS allows me to save pictures that come in Text Messages- Again I think this is more of a bandaid for the phone
- ShopSavvy - Mom you would love this! - It allows me to scan a barcode and it will give me the price at the nearest stores and the cheapest price online. This app alone may end up paying for the phone!
-TV.Com - Allows me to watch shows on my phone the day after they are shown on TV.
-Yellowbook - Gives me phone numbers and directions to where ever I want to go
-Bartender - Gives me the recipe for different alcoholic drinks
- Calorie Counter - Gives me the information to numerous restaurant and the content of the food. It also allows me to scan the barcode of an item and it will give all the nutritional facts
-Listen - Allows me to listen to any podcast I want.

The phone has many more capabilities but these are just the ones that I have come across since I received it. I am sure that it has many more capabilities that I am not even aware of. And it will continue to grow as more apps are created. When you have wifi, bluetooth, gps, and a mobile network the sky is the limit.

By the way... It has an 8gb memory and I am not even close to filling it 1/4 of the way (And that with 200 songs and 120 pictures on it)

Downside
- Battery Life SUCKS! It is MUCH better today though since I downloaded the Advanced Take Killer App. I should be able to make it through the whole day without charging it. It just plugs into the computer or wall to charge so it is not that big of an inconvenience.

Who knows.... I heard the same thing when i bought my phone. I was leaning towards the ERIS and knowing it wld have the same OS as the droid by the 11th put me over the edge to purchase it. (I didn't like the bulkyness and keyboard on the droid and I really like the sense ui on the ERIS)

As long as this phone is as smooth as can be by JAN 22... I will be a happy camper.

I JUST got back from the verizon store.. a REP said the Dec. 11 update IS going to update the ERIS to 2.0..

??

FC

So what happens if the update doesnt come on Dec 11? Do you get something special from Verizon? I was told the same thing from a rep when I bought my phone, but after reading these forums, I'm starting to think 2.0 wont happen on dec 11. Its less than a week away at this point. You think someone at VZ would know...

It's probably not going to happen.

But so what?

The phone has been out less than 45 days. While it's logical to expect some updates to take care of niggles / bugs, it's grasping at straws to think that a major OS upgrade will be happening less than 60 days after the phone was introduced.

You (and I) bought the phone full well knowing that the phone ran Android 1.5 not 2.0, and we could have bought a Droid if that was that important.

What's more important to me is that they fix the bugs in the CURRENT OS, to help battery drain, memory allocation and lag issues.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Eris, and I'm lucky not to have experienced a lot of the issues other people have. In fact, I'm happy the way it is, update or not. What I'm "frustrated" with is that Verizon reps say things that may not be true (sometimes just to make a sale). My rep said the update would come out on Dec 11. Not that he thought or that it might. And from what i've read here, others have been told the same. You just think verizon could get everyone on the same page. I know for a fact they get a daily update every time they login to start their shift. It doesnt make sense to get customers hopes up and then fail to deliver.
