Why are there 15 apps running when I didn't open them?

Using Task Killer and it closes all the apps...works most of the time. I check TK every few often and there are tons of apps running, like settings, music, myspace, etc... even though I never opened them.

Is this the norm or why doesn't Android handle the phone management more smoothly.

Subscribed for answer. Every time I boot, it loads Sprint Navigator, GPS tracker, ShopSavvy, Footprints, etc even though I didn't start them up.

Several of the Sprint and HTC apps load at boot and some third-party apps will have it as an option. Having them loaded shouldn't slow you down unless they're using CPU.

Dormant programs in memory don't use CPU but can cause errors related to low memory such as the sms not received issue.

The apps are not "running", they are in a dormant state ready to be used. You don't need to worry about them, Android will "kill" them when and if it needs to.

but will Android kill them before it hits that point where messages won't download anymore? I ask because this has become a fairly prominent issue in the past couple days, especially since I'm having this problem

things like footprints i'd rather not have running at all. You can download an app called Startup auditor. Here you can disable apps that start up with the phone, then never have to worry about them again.

I thought that last update fixed the low memory issues...Anyways from my experience so far with over 30 over installed apps, I have not had problems with the phone keeping too many apps dormant for too long. The phone seems to be pretty good at memory management and closing down apps as memory is needed for something else. However I still do wonder why it does call up apps that I haven't used in hours and should have no reason to run. Just a minor annoyance though.

Go into settings-apps-manage apps-(__app*_)-clear cache

*browser
*market
*and a few other



That should help with the messages, lag and memory space alert problems. Cache takes up alot of space on the internal memory. My browser can sometimes have 5-6mb of cache.

Using an app like this may cause some apps to not work corectly when you do want them to run. I have never used it and wont.

Android does this on its own without need of an app.

Please post up what ever you find out about that app. I am sure others would like to know how weel or bad it works.

I'm also very hesitant to recommend using any task killer, startup editor, or any app that gives control over the normal boot up and memory management processes used by Android. Such apps, if improperly used, can easily interfere with normal Android operation and make your device or certain apps unstable. Honestly, Android does just fine without the help as long as you're not using a poorly coded or buggy app.

Didn't the last update fix the SMS issues? I'm down at 29 free and they're still coming in through the stock app.

You're confusing the type of memory that causes SMS/Voicemail to stop being received.

Apps run in RAM. RAM is managed automatically by the OS and clears out space when needed by unloading apps that currently aren't being used. RAM filling up will not cause the issue of SMS/Voicemail not being received.

The Internal Memory where apps are installed to (ROM) filling up is what causes the SMS/Voicemail issue. The Maintenance Release fixed the issue where Bluetooth was causing Internal Memory to fill up unnecessarily.

Then do you know what the cause of some of us not being able to download picture/video messages is?

I'm sorry, I do not. I just wanted to clarify the situation because of the wrong assumptions some people posted here. Hopefully that will help better narrow down what the issue may be.
