Root clockwork to amon ra backup question

I am kind of a noob to all this... that being said I know I can just flash amon from a rom manger and then then go back to clockwork. I would prefer not I want to just reroot my phone start from a fresh start. If I pull the recovery files that I nandroided off of clockwork can I use them in amon ra? For instance I go to my clockwork file and then backup and then take the folder of of the back i want can I drop that into the same spot on amon and it work? I am still in the process of downloading amon so not sure how the file structor is the same. Hopefully this is understandable and if so please help.

I know you guys are going to ask why not just use rom manger, I would prefer not to I like actully going into recovery and wipeing and flashing myself just me maybe I will work my way into using rom manager but not at this time.

I way prefer doing things from recovery than using ROM manager. That said, the nandroids between the two recovery images are not compatible. So you should take a nandroid backup with the recovery you plan to use.

+1 I never liked flashing or wiping through ROM manager especially when it is so easy to manually do everything from recovery. Novox is right, they are not compatible.

Are you asking if you can make a backup with Clockwork, copy it to the folder where Amon stores backups, and recover it with Amon? If that is your question, I think the answer is yes, they are both nandroid backups, created the same way and stored in the same structure and framework. I have never tried to do this though, and cannot say for certain that it will work.

If you've already rooted and unlocked your nand, you don't have to reroot. You can simply download and flash Amon. It will replace CWM as your default recovery, and you will still be rooted.

+1 I used to use rom manager, but now i prefer just using RA, and I use Quick Boot too to make things easier

I have tried this, and it doesn't work. I have clockwork 2.5.0.1 and RA 1.8.0. All of my nandroids are done with CW, and one time, I was stuck in a boot loop with RA as my recovery image. I moved one of my CW nandroids to /sdcard/nandroid, but RA didn't find it.

As I recall, RA requires the folder for the nandroid image to have a serial number specific to your phone. So... assuming you are correct in that the image files are in the exact same format and packaging, you'd need to know the folder name RA expects, which means doing a RA nandroid backup in advance. I'm going to do this now to see if the files are truly interchangeable.

Because of the differences, I did not try to do a restore from mismatched nandroids to be safe. The most notable difference is the way the recoveries handle the ext partition of the SD card. RA also creates a wimax image while CW does not. CW creates a recovery image while RA does not. Also, I'm unclear what the hidden file .android_secure.img is in the CW folder.

I think that unless it's an emergency, you don't want to try to force the nandroid of one recovery onto the other.

I wonder why CW creates a recovery image? If you upgrade your recovery and revert to an older nand, this will also revert to the older recovery image.

My guess is that clockwork is designed to flash that recovery image first when doing a nandroid restore. That ensures that the recovery version doing the restore matches the one that created the nandroid. Again, I'm just speculating on these architectural decisions, but that would be my rationale for bundling the recovery with the nandroid package.

I just realized that I could test my theory by creating a nandroid backup with an older version of CW, then updating it to current CW, then restoring the nandroid and see if I'm back at the old CW. but.... too lazy

Yea... sounds like that would be a hassle. I like using Amons RA anyway. I find the interface to be better and I am paranoid about breaking my WiMax so the backup eases my worries a bit.

Wow great help everybody, I got better answers here then over ar xda. and the reason i want to re root my phone especially if I can't use the same back ups is I just want a totally complete fresh start. I have been flashing different roms and kernals daily and sometimes multiple times a day. I know on a pc if you keep installing files and deleting them some parts stick even after a basic formate so I just want to totally start over. It really doesn't take that long so it is not a big deal to me. Once again thanks for the answers and test run.

Registry bloat is non-existent on androids. The only thing you want to clear between flashing roms is the cache and dalvik cache. If you're hardcore, you just factory reset between flashes. That brings you to a pristine state.

The only reason I'd ever re-root is if I never fully rooted in the first place. If you're fully rooted, do a factory wipe, and then install a stock ROM. You'll be perfectly clean.

By chance does anybody know how hard it would be to flash android on to my att tilt I do not use the phone any more it would just be cool to do. Yes that is a win mo phone.

i really wish Amon's let you create a custom file name for each nandroid instead of gibberish for a backup. I do like the aspect of rom manager that i can make a custom name for a backup like "CWM090910Fresh3102King8" (read: clockworkmod backup on 09/09/2010 for rom Fresh 3.1.0.2 using KingKernel #8)

Yeah, my nandroids are all from CW. These days, I keep RA as my permanent recovery, and whenever I need CW, I flash the CW .zip from RA recovery. It instantly switches me to CW. I do my thing and reboot. Next time I enter recovery, RA is back automatically. Recovery within a recovery. best of both worlds.
