My phone turned off by itself today while it was in my pocket, here are some information. The phone is also not rooted, no launchers have been used, and is currently using TouchWiz.

Purchased from AT&T Premier website on August 27th 2010
Delivered to me September 1st 2010
Manufacturing Date - August 2nd 2010
Battery Manufacturing Date - Not checked

Apps installed before shutoff experience:
Dictionary.com
Fandango Movies
The Moron Test Lite
WordUp
Google Voice
Speedtest.net
Barcode Scanner
Ninja Kaka - Fruit Dojo
Drop Block DEMO
Hella Umbrella Beta
PapiJump
Jewels
Unblock Me FREE
Smooth Calendar
GPS Test

1 Day/Night before I experienced the shutoff, the following were installed:
- Used my own wallpaper jpeg instead of one from the Captivate's stock wallpaper folder
- Beautiful Widgets
- AppBrain App Market
- Fast Web Installer
- Angry Birds Lite Beta (APK FILE, USED ANDROID CENTRAL'S SIDELOADER MACHINE)
- Paper Toss

I've had my phone for exactly 1 week, and after reading all the horror stories of people experiencing the random shut offs, I thought I was lucky up until now. I love this phone a lot despite the obvious GPS issues. Does anyone have any idea on what may be causing this? Hardware or Software issue?

I would hate to exchange it for another with AT&T since I've become so attached to it.

Stupid guess, but is it possible before placing it in the pocket, you attempted to lock the screen and held on the power button too long and power menu came up, then while placing in the pocket you accidentally tapped "power off" menu item?
What was your battery charge level?

I have had my Captivate since the release, and it has not powered off a single time.

I would very much hope that was the case, but I'm so sure I didn't power it off myself. I remember exactly that I was playing with it on my desk, and the lcd screen went to sleep, and I placed it in my pocket for maybe 40 mins because of a meeting during work.

After I took it out, I tried to wake it up, but realized it was off. I checked the battery level at the time when I powered it back up, it was at 75%

Really just need to keep your eyes out for a repeat offense. It's really hard to troubleshoot something like this when it's a one time thing. It could be a hickup the phone had, or maybe user error.

Yea, I'm hoping that it's a small hickup as well. From reading so many post of other users experiencing this problem, it just makes me nervous and wonder if I should undo all the changes I did the night/day before this happened.

That is really strange, both the power off incident and the fact that your Captivate came with an lcd. :) Just pulling your chain.
I guess at this point you should just see if it happens again.

I know with some phones, it is possible for the battery to dislodge if the phone is physically abused, and abort the phone. But this cannot happen with the Captivate, the batt sits really tight in there.
