Help Task Killer opinion

Hello Everyone,

There is a link around here that I read up on stating that Task Killers are not recommended.

I was using one for a while and it seemed alright.
Albeit, via the Task Killer I realized that all the proprietary software from carriers were trying to run, ie Moxier Mail etc.

I have since uninstalled my Task Killer, but know that there are these useless programs running does bother me somewhat.

Better to use, or not to use?

I started using one after my phone drained about 20% of battery because craigsphone went nuts. Given this was an isolated incident, have others found the task killer to save battery or no?

I keep the widget handy, but I try not to use it. I don't notice any performance or battery improvement with it.

I used to be of the opinion that they were a good thing (also Juice Defender), and even argued my point on another thread.

However, I've now got rid of Juice Defender and only use the widget of my task killer if I think it's really needed, and can't say I've noticed any difference in the performance of the phone.

Do you go into your pc and kill off background tasks that are running?

Why would you on a mini tablet pc (which is basicly what this phone is) I used one for the first week and just gave up. I think there are a waste of time and you will end up using more power and battery as the phone will just keep restarting everything you keep killing. Dont waste your time...

If you really dont want them apps to run then get "Startup auditor" from the market, it stops apps from launching and running on the phone.

If only Android had a more sensible way of quitting applications, we wouldn't need a task killing application. Since it doesn't provide for that, then we are left with no choice other than to force quit the apps.

Also, with a bit of understanding of how Windows works, you CAN safely turn off a few services and prevent them from booting up. With Android, it's hard to do that without rooting your phone.

Also Android does self regulate or I would have every app I have used through out the day still running but their not.

I have not been using Task Killer, Juice Defender for over a week now. No apparent notice in battery drain. After updating to 020, and charging the phone with my usual routine, ie. whenever a plug is available, I notice the battery life is doing substantially well. So I am leaning towards not using the Task Killers. However, it's more of the application RAM that I am concerned about, not battery life.

Ok if ram is your issue and I don't see why as Android does regulate the ram as well, if you find your pc is laggy you reboot it right?

Remember you need to think of this phone as a mini pc!

Give "Auto memory manager" a try and set it to medium, its an auto task killer of sorts and will kill apps and keep ram at a specified level for you.

I forgot I have had this app running for the last 2 weeks and not sure if it makes any difference?

My 2c worth: I downloaded an app called free memory. This tells you how much memory is being hogged by the other apps. For the first few weeks, my free memory went right down to about 5% free and the phone went laggy. I restarted the phone to kill some apps and left it at that.

Now days I VERY seldom get below 30% free. (90mb)

As for apps running in the background, I know it takes some getting used to to try ignore them, BUT IGNORE THEM. I think this is what that learning client which is FOREVER running is all about. Guess it learns your phone usage habits ???

On a day when I receive no calls, just leave the phone on idle, I used to use about 40% battery power, now that Ive stopped using task killers, Im lucky if I use more than 20%.

I have task panel installed, but only kill apps that bog the system down IE: Facebook or the likes, and also only when i see my memory getting lowish. All the others I leave, and I very seldom, if ever use the kill all function.

I do not have any other apps installed ie Juice Defender etc and have un-rooted my phone. The only app I have is startup auditor (free version as I cant buy it in South Africa) but even then, although moxier is listed as do not start up, it still sometimes runs in the background.

Think the biggest issue is the owner learning to just ignore the apps in the background and let the phone do its thing. Best this I did was un-install task panel, (so I couldnt see what was running) and when the phone got laggy I rebooted. But like I said, me included, the owner is the biggest issue here. Its like we all wanna be control freaks LOL

It takes root access to actually prevent one of those apps that come bundled with the system from starting up. Other than that, these startup cleaners simply keep a list of which apps fire up when the phone is turned on, and kill the on the spot. Not much different from using a task manager.

I've been using an app that is literally called "Task Manager" for quite some time now. Never had any headaches with it, whereas with "Advanced Task Killer", my phone did come a bit unstable.

So I'd recommend people in need of a task managing app to give it a try.
