Help Droidon't support Animated Gif?

Has anyone been able to get an animated gif to work in the browser? Doesn't work for me. It seems to only show the first frame.

It's not just the browser I had my friend send me a GIF and it didn't move... yes it was animated

Whats really bad is that the basic cell phone has been able to play animated GIF's for years. It's strange they left that out. I get them all the time from my friends and can't view them either. My Blackberry Curve I just came from to the Droid plays them just fine and it does not support Flash. My wife's freebie LG phone plays them.

I can confirm Android currently does not fully support .GIF images. You can see them but it will not animate. It is possible Android may provide support in future updates.

@Jeffyo Flash is separate and does not support the viewing of .GIF images either

I don't know how long it'll take to fix this because this is pretty sad for something simple to be overlooked. However, this is a small issue compared to the other multitude of items I rather them address first.

its been my experience that most 'smart' phones don't supported animated .gif files..my old dusty Voyager could even set movies as wallpapers...not my current phone

Don't know but i just tried about every smartphone in my office they all work except for a very old blackberry and my Droid.....

Update installed. Great, can view animated gifs in browser, it's about time. Still static after downloaded though. Can't use them in pics or forum sigs they just sit there like they did on the browser.

In what browser are you seeing the gif function? And after which update?


Seems like this would be something a custom ROM could address perhaps?

Never thought of it before but it IS pretty silly that the Uber phone can't run a bloody gif.

Both the stock browser and the Dolphin HD, in the update we got last week.

You can download animated gifs but they remain static in Astro or the stock gallery which as far as I can tell are the only places you can upload from.

I want to do this rooting thing but I don't know Jack about it and it sounds like you have to be some kind of computer geek to even have a chance to understand it.

If you read the thread on rooting your Droid some of the terminology can be intimidating but the actual process is not too difficult, particularly when you understand there are only a couple ways to actually screw the Droid up so badly that you can't un-screw it.

I only rooted my Droid one week ago today, so I am still more or less a noob at it.

Excellent, I hope you do. I only wanted to achieve a few things by rooting and I am very, very satisfied with the results. Really, if someone is willing to read all the steps, spend a little time understanding how it kind of works, and invest $3-$5 in some tools (applications) then I do not know why anyone would choose NOT to root.

It really has made the phone much more usable for me...and I am not interested in wringing the last inch of speed out of the Droid.

.gifs cause problems on Chrome on OS X for me. They end up hogging the processor and send the temps way up. So, for me, .gifs are nothing but trouble.

If you downlaod handcent sms the animated gifs you recieve as texts will move. I was going crazy before I found this handy little free app. Has alot of cool extras as well.

If the gif problem Is a complete android issue then why did my Samsung galaxy s play gifs before latest firmware update? and a new version that offers less features than the original is called a downgrade!

Funny thing, huh. This thread was brought up back in 2009, now we're in 2012 and Android still don't natively support animated GIF's. Any workarounds available? And also, I'm curious, say I want to send a "Happy Easter" MMS to a friend. I don't have any to forward, but want to pull it from scratch. I find a funny animated GIF on the web, that I download to the phone. Now, I don't see the animation in my phone. However, if I include the file, will it display properly on the receiver's phone, assuming that he or she has eg. an old fashioned phone, able to decode animations?
