MS Outlook

I did a search and this was not addressed. I use MS Outlook at home and want to keep it. I know that I can sync the email/calander using the cable...but here is what I want. I would like to be able to get my email that is sent to my home email sent to my Eris regardless of where I am.....along the same lines as how the Blackberry is set up.
I do not want to use gmail or yahoo.

So is this possible?

I'm pretty far from an expert on the subject but Outlook isn't a mail server, it's a mail client. That means that your Outlook polls somebody's server to retrieve mail. Do you know who is hosting the mail for you?

In a corporate environment Microsoft Exchange often hosts mail for Outlook. I doubt your home email is being hosted by an Exchange server but I could be wrong.

There is one other thing to consider. Email messages get to the application (your Eris) in one of two ways. Either you pull them from the mail server by some action that happens on your phone or they get pushed to your phone automatically moments after they arrive at the mail server. Pull-type delivery should always be available but but push-type may not. Another name for push-type is ActiveSync. When you find out who your mail provider is see if they offer ActiveSync.

Oh, if I underestimated your technical knowledge and you already know all of this you have my apology. From a single post it is difficult to determine how technically savvy someone is.

Thanks for the help....I will look into that. I live in Ohio and my mail is provided by Road Runner (xxxxxx@woh.rr.com). Here is why I am a little confused. Many people use their blackberries to get their personal mail....so why can't we do that on the Eris? I just would think that it would be possible since the Eris came out WAY after the blackberry.....which can do this....unless the users are using a corporate email server/system versus a personal one.

Roadrunner probably has a web page where you can get your email and it may even be formatted for a mobile browser... I don't know.

I was a Minnesota Roadrunner mail user many years ago before the Eris and I used Outlook like you. It worked pretty well but the move to Google's Gmail was a really good choice for me. At the time I simply forwarded all mail arriving at the RR account to Gmail so I didn't miss anything.

The best thing about Gmail is that it is 100% web based. This means that I can get it from practically any computer and any browser. Gmail is also push mail so you will get notified on your Eris seconds after a message hits their servers.

The biggest win for me was Google Calendar. I was able to create accounts for me, my wife, and all of my kids and then share the calendars with each other. In case you're unaware Google allows you to essentially overlay all of the calendars on top of each other so you can see everything that is going on. Baseball, hockey, skating lessons, etc for the kids were all really tough to manage effectively back in the Outlook days. Google Calendar alone brought a 1000% increase in organization to my life and it works great on the Eris. I use Outlook/Exchange at work but my personal affairs are 100% Google and it is just plain fabulous.

It most certainly can access your email. Time Warner/Roadrunner uses standard pop3 email access. You just need to get the setting from them, same you used to configure outlook with, and use the android email client, not the gmail client, the email client, the one used to connect to corporate exchange email. Add an account, supply the pop server info for your area and you are done.
