So, where should I buy my new Incredible?

I'm not soliciting deals, but rather want to know the pros/cons of buying from a Verizon store vs. an online retailer?

My "new every 2" is eligible next week, and I have decided on the Incredible.

There are deals out there currently ranging from $70 - $100 at many online retailers. I'm assuming a Verizon store will want $199. So, why pay double (if not more) at a Verizon store rather than from an online retailer?

Pros/Cons? Any advice appreciated

Im curious about this too. My upgrade is coming up in about a week and a half and im not sure where I stand. Im on my dad's family plan with a 2 year old LG Dare and want to upgrade to the Dinc, but would prefer a one year contract. Can I still do that and pay the 75 bucks or whatever off amazon? I mean I would even be willing to pay the 279 or whatever VZN is offering. Although I keep hearing about paying 550 or Whatever for not going with another 2 year plan...im so confused!!!

Honestly the less I pay the better, believe me, working on a PetSmart part-time 8 dollar an hour wage is not a job where I can just throw money around.

Amazon has been having them for $99 randomly, and I think one place even had them at $75.

Verizon is doing a deal with the new samsung phone. Buy that, and get any phone free. So if you know someone who also is getting one, you could get it as a freeeeebiee

I realize it is cheaper online.....much cheaper.

But, my question is more "why"? There MUST be an advantage to buying directly from Verizon, right? I mean, if there isn't, why would anyone every buy there?

And, am I right that the price is $199 at Verizon stores?

There is no reason. If you want to put a price on someone showing you how to use the phones, explaining app management and setting up your phone for you. Then go to a store. I do that for all my customers.

The phone in a store is $299.99 minus your NE2($50 or $100). So your at $249.99 or $199.99, then you get your $100 mail in rebate. So now your at either $149.99 or $99.99. If you get it from a BJ's location, and idk if this is consistant around the country, you get a $50 BJ's gift card if your a BJ's member. So now your at either $99.99 or $49.99

Also think of it like this. If you are in a sales type job, or something that you distribute a product and make money. Say you are a car salesman, and you work for Honda directly, and someone buys a car from Honda.com and not you, then 6monthes later brings it back for YOU to fix because they blew a transmission, arent you gonan be like what the hell you didnt even buy it from me?? Obviously its a weird scenario but you get what i mean right?

Thank you for the well thought out answer. And that does make sense. Personally, I'm one of those guys that learns by doing, so there is no real advantage for me to have a salesman explain anything to me. Usually, I'm ignoring him just trying to take my new toy home to mess with.

Regarding your last paragraph: Do people that buy online have issues getting warranty service? If I have an mechanical issue with my phone, can I just call the Verizon number for service/tech support, or do I need to go through a 3rd party that the online retailer is contracted to? If that is the case, that might be a reason I would go directly to the store. Nothing would piss me off more than to have some mechanical issue and Verizon tell me "Sorry, you didn't buy it our store, we are not responsible..."

No no not at all. Im sorry if it came out that way. I work in a BJ's and im very customer friendly, every customer I deal with knows me by first name and vice versa, so if they have a phone problem they come directly to me. This isnt the case with most stores because of the high traffic. But I can tell you Im still selling over 100 phones a month. So i have great customer rapport. If I was to go over tons of things with a customer, and they just bought online or through somewhere else, different store what have you(which has happened a billion times), and then they came back to me to ask how to use it, im fuming. Now sure I can understand if you are like you said tech savy, which most everyone on this site is. And also I can see if its a significant price difference. But in my store, no phone will be cheaper anywhere else because of the BJs card ect, so theres no reason to go anywhere else. We are actually cheaper than our regular stores, and they do this on purpose.

The other thing, to go back to the first part of your first question. Ordering online means you wait. Now I know its a 2-3day thing, but still. I would definately check out your local BJs if you have one for what deals they are running. Especially if your a club member. If not it might not be any cheaper. Most of our stores have DIncs in stock now. I know mine does.

There is a BJ's in a neighboring city. I've driven buy it, but never been in one, so obviously I am not a member. Can anyone purchase a phone there? Or must you have a membership?

The way it works here, if you dont have a card you cant buy from BJs, however, Verizon is not Bj's its verizon. Ive heard of some locations checking for a card on the way in to help with theives ect. If they ask for a card, just say your going to Verizon, im pretty sure our contract says they have to let our customers in. That would be crazy

It doesn't matter if you buy the phone from Verizon or an authorized reseller. You will still get the (approximate) same level of customer service post-sale at a corporate Verizon store. Verizon wireless is a multi-billion dollar public company that has millions of customers. When you have a warranty issue and you walk into a store, the rep will look at your account to see if your phone is in warranty or out of warranty. If you buy your phone at a Verizon store, and go back there for a warranty issue 6 months later, what are the chances that you will deal with the same person who sold you the phone? VERY SLIM. Also, Verizon corporate stores have seperate technical support, customer service and sales associates in the store. The person you deal with will most likely have no idea whether you originally bought your phone there or not. Berry2Droid, what you talk about above does make sense in other situations, especially when dealing with smaller companies/less customers. When you buy a Honda, your 3 year/36,000 mile warranty will be honored at any Honda dealership in the United States. Now the dealer you bought your car from might remember you when you bring in your car for service and recognize you as someone who bought your car there. But if you just moved into the city and your car is in warranty they will still take care of you.

That said, OP, you should buy your phone where you will get the best deal. At a VZW corporate store, the Incredible is $199.99 after $100 rebate, and you will probably get a $50 credit for your new every 2, bringing your price to $149.99 + tax (you will pay tax on the full purchase price of $299.99 however). So you will pay about $270 out the door with tax, then get $100 rebate. If you purchase the phone directly from Amazon, you will pay $79.99 + tax with no rebate to deal with. Buying from Amazon will save you about $85 when all is said and done. That $85 would cover an extended battery, case, holster, car charger and then some.

Another deal to look at is the Samsung Fascinate. It is coming out on Monday, and is Buy 1 get 1 free right now. This could be a good deal if you need 2 phones. However I heard the UI isn't very good, and although it has a 1ghz processor, it doesn't feel near as snappy as the Incredible.

Smitty20, no matter who you buy your phone from, all of your post-purchase support will come from a Verizon wireless corporate store or customer support. If you need a warranty replacement, walk into a Verizon corporate store and they will give you a warranty replacement phone. If you need to talk to customer service, you call the same number that a person who purchased their phone from a corporate store would call. The only time you would go back to the authorized reseller after you buy the phone is with any problems within the first 30 days (either to return the phone, or if you have a defective phone in the first 30 days they will swap you out for a brand new full retail package phone)
