Help Unmounting Sd Card

Sorry this is a new thread, but apparently I'm an idiot today....

EXACTLY what is the proper way to unmount the SD card?

For example, I'm plugged in to my PC and have finished rearranging the files on the card. Now, do I close out of the file on my PC THEN unplug and/or unmount on the handset? Do I have to unmount on the handset before I unplug?

(The User's Guide suggests using the "safely remove hardware feature." I don't think I have that option....)

Yes, I think the User's Manual is correct......I believe you can just unmount the phone the same way you would a USB Flash Drive or external drive, by going to your task bar, at the bottom right of your Windows, and clicking the icon to "Safely Remove Hardware".......I hope that is what you were referring to.

I think the best way is to unmount on the phone just like you mounted from the task bar on the phone. Forget that silly Windoze safety dance... The drive will disappear from the pc and you are back.

....OR you could use this method as well

I just close the window on the PC then unmount the Sd card from the phone (opposite procedure as mounting) then pull the plug...I do this often with no ill effect.

what if you plug it into the computer, hit mount.. does it save that for future use or do i keep having to mount it?

also what if im done using it on my computer and i just unplug it. i never do that safely eject crap. i just yank

It will not save you will have to mount and unmount each time I think it's a linux thing.

I never turn off the USB before I uplug the phone either.

I accidentally pulled the plug yesterday with the Droid mounted. There were no ill effects (I had transferred files prior to the unplug).

However, some linux distributions do not write changes to the SD/USB until the unmount (umount) command is given. Thus, if I had done this on my older linux box I would have had problems, but I was using XP. Newer versions on linux do not have this problem.

Anyone know if there is a NFS mount solution so I don't have to umount the sd card in droid to mount it in linux/windows? Would be ideal for file transfer via wifi.

not found any NFS yet, but found a Samba/cifs client in the market that worked to wifi me to my FreeNAS box. it is called SMB file sharing. just search 'samba'

people with blackberrys that have passwords on them are used to this already. you plug the blackberry in and in order to access mass storage mode you need to type your password in on the phone

On my N800 I use sftp/ssh to transfer files. With WinSCP on windows or anything on *nix it is a breeze to move files back and forth (phone can be anywhere that has net access) without disturbing the device or dismounting. Although I'm not yet running apps from SD I do that on the N800 so dismounting the SD isn't always practical. Would need an SSH server for Android to do this.

This right here was extremely useful. Thanks ever so much! I just installed it and it's easier by far than any other method.

I normally just unmount my phone from the phone side with no ill effects. However, somehow today my computer at work (windows XP) must have had some files open or in use when I unmounted from the phone side. It unlinked? a whole mess of files (they all ended up in the LOST.Dir folder).

Luckily I had a backup of my SD card on a CD (which I now would highly recommend doing from time to time). It made fixing the problem a minor inconvenience.

Basically about a dozen files were reduced to 0kb filesize. I first noticed the problem when I couldn't find some music files. Then I started looking around and noticed other files damaged (ebooks and pdf files etc).

Now I am going to start ejecting in windows and then unmounting from the phone.
