Problems Installing SDK

I'm simply trying to download the SDK for rooting/unrooting purposes, not to develop apps with Eclipse, etc. I've downloaded the USB drivers package in the SDK, but when I right click 'My Computer,' go to 'Properties' and go to Hardware, etc, etc, I do not get a yellow exclamation or any other icon next to my phone. Yes, USB Debugging is enabled. So, without the SDK, I cannot download Amon's Recovery Image, etc.

I understand some 'technological-speak,' but not as much as many of the people here. I'd appreciate it if you used tiny words =D Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps you need the USB Driver Package? Check to see in SDK if it is one of the installed packages.

Funny thing, when I rooted, I did it from my laptop (Windows Vista) and my son's desktop (Windows 7) and had almost no USB connectivity issues. Then, I installed the SDK on a new desktop (Windows 7) and I couldn't connect. The solution? HTC Sync. I think it does a better job of figuring-out what USB drivers it needs and installs them (I was missing a "Win7_x86" driver set).

See this excerpt taken from the above thread:

6. Some users have also reported that installing HTC Sync fixes / resolves their USB connectivity issues. I suspect that it goes through the USB setup a little better than the SDK does. If you want to try that, here is the downloads link for HTC_Sync_2.0.33.exe (its about 39 MB):

By the way, make sure you are set to Charge-Only also. There's also a few more connectivity (and other) tips in the thread. Hope this helps.

I just wanted to add that make sure you check the usb debugging AFTER you have plugged in the phone to your computer and set it to charge only. Was having similar issues until I tried this and worked first time after...

Yes, the HTC Sync did indeed fix it! Thank you so much! ^^ I'm now back to 1.5 and waiting for the 2.1 release =D

Can you be more specific?

Are you having USB connectivity problems or problems getting the SDK installed (or is it the part of the SDK install where you are downloading components (like the plug-ins, etc))? Its been a little while since I've done this, so I can't recall off the top of my head about the sequence of events...

Have you looked here: Android SDK | Android Developers ?

I see there's also some videos on YouTube that walk you through things.
