Root How to Guide: Flashing Clockwork Recovery & ROMS (includes screenshots) Recovery

This method is now considered out of date for the Ally but technically should still work. I recommend using the AmonRA recovery for the Ally as it has much more support and updated for the Ally. See here for more info. I will keep this guide up for infomational purposes only.

Please note before attempting any of this that rooting does void your warranty. I also am not reponsible for any damage that is done to your phone but am more than willing to help you solve a problem in IRC. See my signature on how to get on #ally IRC channel.

**I do not actually use the Clockwork Recovery (i use drellisdees). I made this because even though a guide is out there people still seem to get confused so im hoping this well help.**

Guide to flashing roms on the LG Ally with screenshots.

First off. Make sure your phone is rooted. If your phone is not rooted see the following option.

** The following guide will install the AmonRA custom recovery for you at the end of the rooting process. Use the All In One Recovery thread i've linked in various places here to update your recovery to the latest version.

Now once you are rooted lets go ahead and get into flashing the recovery image.

Let's go over exactly what a recovery image will do.

-A recovery image will allow you to Flash custom roms,flash kernels, make backups and restore your phone with the backups you made, wipe the data, cache, dalivk cache and much more.

Now there are two recoveries that work with the Ally.

1. The Clockwork Recovery
2. The Amon-Ra Recovery

The Clockwork Recovery is the easier meathod for those who are new to the flashing process. So we will cover that meathod first.

1a. Go to the market and search for Rom Manager and download/install it.
b. once installed Select "Flash Clockwork Recovery"
Then select the LG Ally. **After flashing the recovery select "Reboot into recovery" to make sure it flashed porperly"

c. **Before doing this make sure you make a backup of your current rom if you want too.** Once it successfully flashes select "Download Rom" then Choose the ROM you want. At the moment Velocity v0.2 is the only avaiable custom rom besides the Ally Stock ROM.

d. Once it downloads a window will pop up asking if you want to "Backup existing ROM". This is recommened if you are using a stock rom as you can re-flash your recovery to the state where your phone worked correctly.
-After this it is important that you select the box "Wipe Data And Cache"

e. After that a window will pop up asking if you want to boot into Clockword Recovery and continue installation. Press OK to do so.

f. Now your phone should reboot and the a screen similiar to this should come up. This means the rom is installing.

g. If you have sucessfully flashed the rom your phone will reboot (it will take alittle longer with the first boot) and the ally setup screen should come up

Some notes: -If you have a ROM saved to your SD card you can select the "Install From SD card
option
-You can boot into recovery by powering on your phone by holding
SEND+MENU+PWR then let go when the LG logo pops up.

I decided not to create my own instructions because these are pretty much as simple as you can ask for.

**Update**
For those that want to give this recovery a try but don't want to use the command line way of flashing it there's an easy way.

1: Download/install Rom Manager
2: Flash Clockwork Recovery
3: After flashing Clockwork Recovery scroll down to Flash Alternate Recovery

4. Now choose it and bam you have it flashed and can uninstall rom manager if needed. You boot into it with the method posted in the above instructions.

Any feedback and mistakes i may have made is more than welcome.

I don't really need this tutorial, but I wanted to post and give you a thanks and thumbs up anyway, because I think it was a really nice gesture on your part. Especially considering you don't even use the Clockwork Recovery.

A couple of simple edits you might want to make:

1. Get rid of the open < preceding your image url in your forum IMG tags on step D.
2. Method doesn't have an "A" in it.
3. typo... dalvik

If I read through it a few more times, I'm sure I could find other spelling inaccuracies, but I don't want to come off as an ass. Especially when I really do think it was super cool of you to do this! I generally do a lot of tutorials and write-ups in communities I hang out in. It will be good to have some company here. Make damn sure you want clockwork recovery on you ally, cause if you install it to your phone it is hell to get off there. I have been trying for 2 weeks to remove it, and so far, i cannot So once again, make sure that you really want this recovery on your phone, cause it will be like puttings socks on a rooster to remove

The same instance would happen if you flashed the Amon-Ra Recovery. You would need to flash the original stock recovery that shipped with the phone to "remove" it.

And if that has been deleted, your SOL? If so, thats BS. Mr Koush needs to fix the ability to remove CW in the setting of his rom manager, is what needs to be done. So since i don't have the backup copy of the original rom that came with my phone, then i am forever stuck on V6? If so, i see a terrible fate ahead for my wifes phone is all i know.

You agreed to overwrite something (stock recovery) when you installed CW. He can't have an option just to "remove" it now, you wouldn't have stock back. You have to reflash the stock recovery, replacing CW.

If you don't have and can't find a copy, you can use LG's tools for reflashing to stock v6. This will replace your ROM and your recovery. I did it to get back to stock after Velocity, and my recovery is back to that flashing hazard thingy (stock if i'm not mistaken)...

I think one big question though is why you're so hostile about needing it gone? If you never use it, it won't affect you either way... and the stock recovery is far from useful in my experience.

I do not think you quite understood what i said. Regardless if you flash the easy way and flash Clockwork Recovery or the semi hard way (not hard at all imo) drellisdee's Amon-Ra recovery you can't just get rid of it.

I have now, because when i reboot into recovery either via rom manager or send/end menu way all i get is a fast animation of the gold triangle with the exclamation point in it, with the little green droid standing in front of it. Then it goes into reboot mode back to phone mode. So i have removed my recovery, but now i can't get the stock one to take its place. Also, im currently on the old stock rom where i get the update notice, and when i try to install, it goes halfway an crashes back to a reload.

I believe that the gold triangle with the droid then goes to reboot means that you have flashed the stock recovery. I say this because i read somewhere on here that the stock recovery was locked down by LG so it couldn't be used by the average person.

If thats the case, then looks like i could update to V8 then since the alt recovery has been removed. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure the recovery has nothing to do with OTA updates... have you tried *#*#CHECKIN#*#*? Also, did you restore to v6 from the LG stock image or from a backup? I've heard (but am not sure if it's true) that if you restore from a backup of stock, it may not be "exact" and you may not get OTA.

Im getting the update to show up now. I still had a copy of the original rom that came with the phone, i made a nandroid after i rooted it. I never upgraded to V9, i have always been on V6. I can choose to install the update, and the update process will crash about half way through. Then the phone will reboot like nothing ever happened. I can't install any zips at all now. I have the stock recovery on sd card, i wonder if i renamed it to update and did the install via rom manager would that work? I wondering if i go into privacy setting and do the wipe phone data there it will let the update install completely. Any suggestions on getting the V8 update to install

As i said before you cannot do anything with the stock recovery because it cannot be accessed by the everyday user. Thats the way LG made it. Thats why to flash any zips you have to use a custom recovery.

Noob: Okay so I rooted my Evo 4G 2.3 and I downloaded the Cyanogen Mod 7 ROM with ROM Manager. It immediately was having problems, then all of a sudden ROM Manager started having problems as well. So, I just want to go back to stock and unroot. The whole shibang. I went to bootloader and for some reason when I go to install/flash zip from SD card It doesnt do anything. When I click on the file I want to install/flash the file is empty and there is no way to do anything. Can someone please help. I am so sad cause I just got my phone and I barely got to enjoy it yet.

I am using an LG Ally which is successfully rooted. When I choose to reboot into recovery, the device does start to reboot, i see the LG screen followed very briefly by the android symbol with the exclamation point, then it boots up normally.
