info on rooting (sprint) htc hero with google

ok so iv come to the conclusion that its better to root my hero because of the new versions of android i can install and because of speed updates, but im very new to this, so im wondering what the simplest and safest way to do it is, and also a way that i wont have to keep doing everytime i update. i heard theres ways that dont relock the phone afterwards.


also look at my other threads because they are all questions about rooting my phone. this is a big process for me right now

Sure, there are risks... if you're not careful and flash a ROM that is not appropriate for your device, you could screw things up. But its relatively easy if you follow the steps. You can always flash back to the factory ROM if you need to service your phone at Sprint/Best Buy.

As a side note, I brought my Hero to Sprint this morning to get the dust wiped out from under the screen. I didn't bother flashing back to 2.1, thinking they wouldn't need to turn on the phone... but the guy asked for any passcodes I had set up. I sheepishly told him that I installed a different 'launcher' and asked if they could not bother turning it on. He said, "did you root your phone?"... its not a big deal. So they are fixing the dust issue, knowing I'm rooted, under warranty. I think its pretty common at this point to root your phone, and they reps at Sprint probably have done it as well. Your situation may vary....

thank you for the information, where is the best place to go to get all of these roms, such as the new ones i need to put android 2.2 in my hero, and the old ones just incase i need to put it back to the default

There is an official Cyanogen Mod thread here somewhere for the 2.2 Froyo ROM.

After you actually root your phone (which basically means you have rights to change things as you please), you'll boot to recovery (power on phone while holding the home button) then do a nandroid back up (which means saving the CURRENT rom on your phone, 2.1 I assume) so you can revert back to the factory settings anytime you please. Capish?

Once you download the Froyo rom (zip format), drag it to your SD card, so after you nandroid back up, then wipe, you can immediately flash the new ROM.

Cyanogen6 is a port of Android 2.2(Froyo) for the hero.
A Nand Root is a root with superuser access and nandroid backup.
HBOOT is the bootloader version.

what do you mean a port of froyo? theres different ports? what is a port? im new to this

everything on the SD card is saved...ie music, pics, etc
