Why Android kicks the iPhone's Ass

Hey guys, I'm a former iPhone fan recently 100% converted to Android. I'm kinda shocked I did not know how great android was before I actually got one, and basically 95% of people don't even know what it is or how good it is. So I wrote this blog post about it. Just thought i'd throw it on here first to see what you think. If I have got anything wrong please let me know or if you can suggest any additions please shout and I'll include it.

I know what you mean. I used to have a g1. I could tell android was a great platform but the device itself was so terrible (may have just been mine, I got it on ebay) that it could barely function. I switched to iPhone. Now in December I'm switching to verizon and getting a Droid 2, I'm so excited

G1 was an early alpha of both Android software and hardware. You should have felt like and early alpha tester

Wait till you get your D2 and you will see how much it has changed.

Just recently switched from iPhone 3Gs to Droid X. The iPhone was a nice piece of hardware, but the software crippled the hell out of it. I had mine jailbroken and modded to hell and back, but when I had to do a full restore when I finally updated from jailbroken 3.0.1 to jailbroken 3.1.3, it took me a day and a half to get it back to where it was. But with Android, I was able to do all the modding I wanted to do right out of the box, I'm loving this! Plus... NO MORE ITUNES! Goddamn, I hate iTunes. I hated iTunes so much that I didn't sync my phone with it very often, so last time I had a problem that made me do another full restore, I lost a lot of apps. But with Android, I can backup all my apps on Appbrain and my contacts are all on GMail, so no need to even plug it in to a computer. Kudos to you Google, KUDOS!

thats a good way of describing it, actually. Like being a tester. Which is an experience I definitely did not pay $300 to have. And for a long time it turned me off of android, disappointed. But I can see that I had a "worst case" set of circumstances and that Android really is the software I'd been hoping it would live up to.

Now its just a matter of waiting till December and shutting myself in my room for a few hours while I set it up to my liking. You know, the usual routine.

Contrary to what Hrethgir said, though, I'm actually going to miss iTunes. I mean there were some faults, but I really liked being able to manage all of my device's media and applications from one relatively easy to use program.

I'll jump on this one. If you use Windows, iTunes is pretty bloated and memory intensive. And it slows down your startup time.

It also ties your device to a single iTunes library. You can't use another computer to transfer songs because you're "synced" to the first one. It'll ask you to wipe your library in order to transfer from another computer.

Those are the main drawbacks I remember from iTunes based on my iPod experience. I'm sure there are others, but that's enough for me to hate iTunes.

You can use double twist (on the computer) sync music on and off your phone. No need for itunes.

My wife has an older version ipod nano, or micro, or whatever that screenless clip-on thing is. Anyways, I am the one that has to do the music on that thing, and I gotta say that I HATE iTunes!

NOW, as of today, my wife got an iPad... I am so GD pissed right now that no decent companies have put out an Android tablet. I kept telling my wife "hold off, hold off for a couple more months for an Android, I do not want an incompatible closed-off POS that only operates out of itunes!" But no, her client had to buy one for her. Now I have to deal with all the future headaches of that thing having trouble syncing to google calendar and whatnot.

However, I gotta say that I am SOOOOOO envious that the iPad has a free live streaming netflix app.

iTunes is a memory/ CPU hog and makes you do everything their way. With Android you can mount the phone as a storage device and drag&drop files that you want on the phone. You can also use tools like MS SyncToy to synchronize your music/ data folders between the phone and PC, but you have options, whiles with iTunes you are only limited to the way iTunes works.

Like has been said, it's a fat bloated hog that is slow and takes forever to open or do anything. I'd rather us WMP or just drag-and-drop, just nice and easy.

I used to say (when I was an iPhone guy) that iTunes was a strength AND a great weakness of the iPhone.
It IS a good system in many ways--it had to be because Apple had the genius business plan to I/O lock all of their devices through a single portal that they control--iTunes.
It is all about Apples control. But Apple executes most everything quite well. IOS is very good in many ways, iTunes was amazing and a game changer, as was the iPhone and many other things.
But their model is about CONTROL. And if you don't want to be controlled and play with your device exactly as they choose to permit it is pretty annoying.

Android really is the choice for I/O freedom and that is a huge deal. But remember, cemeteries are a neat and tidy and VERY CONTROLLED and playgrounds are wild and noisy and crazy and free and barely controlled.

Creativity is going to move toward the Android OS over time, but for the moment the Android Market is much more like a playground.

Now, it seems (stock Froyo)to be in beta stage .. (Though, in google, pretty much every software is in beta, and most of them are really good )

Waiting for Gingerbread, to finally get some of the polish. (Though, have to say, the huge amount of customising, along with some great launchers/UI like Sense,LPP,ADW make it a moot point for most)

You could try using Spotify? I never used iTunes on my iPod. Yes it is

I use iTunes on my PC and I love it. (just to be clear - iTunes the application, not iTunes the store). We have about a 15,000 track music collection - a mix of MP3 and M4A, none of it DRM'ed. iTunes makes it easy to search, sort, organize and create playlists. It's blazingly fast because all the work is done in one XML file. Plus it supports all the standard tags.

We use 3 PC's (plus 3 iPods and a Sonos system) in our house and all the music is stored on one NAS drive (HP Media Vault), so it's up 24/7 even when the PC's are not booted. When we boot up a PC iTunes points to the NAS. So this eliminates the need to "synchronize" any device that's running off the NAS because they're all working from the same library. Only portable devices like iPods need to be synced because they have their own, local, store, and we use iTunes for that.

What application would you recommend as an alternative? And, in particular, what application can I get for my Droid Incredible that can do this? BTW, Sonos has an app for iPhone but the only Sonos app for Android - andronos - is a sheer bug-riot.

iTunes is a good bit of software, I use it all the time on my Macbook

but I don't have an iPhone, its Android and HTC Desire for me, TBH it was all about costs per month for what you get, and I get an awful lot with my Desire. Oh, and hasn't everyone got an iPhone now, they are as common as muck.
