Fascinate vs Droid X (Which phone has more potential?)

I posted a thread in the Fascinate Forums regarding the Droid X.

The Fasinate has amazing hardware but is "crippled" by its software. But the galaxy S lineup phones are easily rootable and can run custom ROMs to fix that. (The GPS issues are fixable via a software update right?)

The Droid X on the other hand has an encrypted bootloader but has a larger fan base (due to Verizon's heavy advertisement for the phone).

Which phone do you think has more POTENTIAL in the long run?

Both phones currently run Android 2.1

Personally, my DX is having a lot of issues and I'm looking to switch to either a new DX or the Fascinate.

Anyone want to defend why I should keep my Droid X over switching to the Fascinate?

That is an AWFULLY loaded question!! And one that I suspect will spark a lot of emotional responses.

Personally I say keep whichever one you prefer... and return/sell the other. Contrary to what some seem to think, phones are tools and not lifestyle choices. Get what best serves your needs and enjoy it till the next one comes along.

I personally don't like samsung. I think their builds are clumsy and cheap.

The screen is great, but beware of battery life...

You will have 1/2 the battery life of the X.

Camera... more megapixels on X doesn't make it better. But then again they may look amazing on the fascinate due to the screen, when uploaded look washed out. I had this problem with DINC.

Do you want 2.2 OTA sooner because X will have it first. It probably will take a little for the fascinate.

Are you a gamer? Fascinate probably would be better.

Large or average size screen? Its all really personal preference.

Good luck.

I agree with Samsung historically having chintsy offerings. I've had a few Samsung phones in the past and I have had A LOT of problems with them in general. One phone that my wife had actually got so hot when she spoke on it (not when she used the browser or anything like that...when she SPOKE ON THE PHONE) that it singed the hair off around her ear at one point.

Granted any phone could have its own problems and no phone is completely flawless, but I will never own another Samsung phone again. With that being said, they make wonderful televisions and screens in general. I just don't feel like phone hardware is their strong suit.

I think that Samsung has come a long way but because of my personal history I would never go down that road again because I am the type of person that holds a grudge lol. I own a DX and I love it. I honestly can't think of a "high end" android phone recently released that wasn't awesome. The brutal reality of it is that each phone is designed with a different user set in mind. You just have to figure out which fits your needs best.

Most importantly, have fun. Don't let picking your phone become a job. Never lose sight of the fact that it is in fact just a tool. Let it be fun and work for you instead of against you.

The Droid X is an amazing phone and I still think the better of the two phones if you're running it stock... But the phone that has more potential (if you're one of those who likes to tweak your phone to death) is definitely the Fascinate if only for the fact it has an unlocked boot loader for custom kernels.

I don't think that's right.. Everything I've read has said the screen takes less battery life, every review I've read or watched has said the battery life is about the same or more battery life (however I have read that half battery life is try for talk time). If you can post a link backing that up, I'll concede, I just have heard otherwise everywhere else.

I've been using my Fascinate moderately today, surfing the web listening to pandora, and watching a few youtube videos and playing with the camera and I have half battery after 12 hours, granted thats not HUGE usage but it's pretty good.

Not in the market for a phone anymore since I have the droid x, but I read the fascinate review at engadget. Samsung Fascinate review -- Engadget

I'm not sure if they are being biased, but if that stuff about the software is true (all the integration with bing and bing being the only search option, vz navigator being default and a pain in the ass to change) then it's pretty obvious the fascinate has "less potential." Hell it has less potential than just about any android phone, if you are someone who wants absolutely nothing to do with bing like me. Of course if you can get rid of all the bing crap by rooting, then I think the Fascinate would have more potential since it has the super amoled and a better gpu.

Btw no offense to people who actually like/use Bing, it's just a personal preference thing.

If we are talking about battery life, I can go ALL day with my X, and it is on 40% when I put it on the charger every night. I usually am around 18-20 hours. I would post a shot of it right now, but I had to restart my phone 3h ago because for some reason, I wasn't getting texts. A reboot took care of it though, so I guess its ok. If you are interested, there is a thread about it somewhere around here.

Check the link posted below your post. It is about half of the X battery life. Super AMOLED screens a like AMOLED screens while they look nicer, drain the battery.

Just be happy you don't have the snap dragon processor, then you would be mimicking the Incredibled intolerable batty life.

Also you have a bigger battery then the Inc, which is a plus. Same as X, and I'm sure with extended you would be rocking even more.

On your type of usage I have 50% at 22 hours.

I'm still not saying your wrong, but the fascinate is not on that chart. While I'm sure its near the other samsungs, I'm not so fast to dismiss it because of its predecessors.

Either way I don't think its a big deal because I made it through the day. Big thing I miss going from Eris to fascinate is led notifications. And that's about it to be honest. The whole Bing thing is supposed to be fixed with 2.2 but I don't even use the search button. Still both great phones honestly and wish people wouldn't dismiss the fascinate as a great phone so quickly because of something that is easily fixed and so trivial.

i like how this is posted in the fascinate forum too, so either phone is the right phone.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or what, but that's definitely the best way to go when comparing phones. By posting in competitive forums you hear the exaggerated best and worst of the phones. You hear the EXTREMES. I think its great for comparing phones, because they're both about equally biased.

Martimus is right the Fascinate is a Galaxy S phone same as the Samsung Vibrant and Captivate hench the nearly identical performance in the link I posted earlier. All 3 of those phones are built to be pretty much identical. AMOLED draw a lot more power then older screens do but look better then the older screens. Question is do you want long live and performance vs short life and decent performance? :D for my money I am sticking with my X.

Am I the only one who sees the lack of notification LED on the Fascinate as an absolute deal-breaker? Not a minor oversight, a gigantic miscue by Samsung! Who wants to have to wake up their phone every five minutes all day to look and see if there are any messages. Horrible!
I consider it a major deal breaker. I see the people over at the fascinate forum who say it's not. Apparently most of them don't need to know if someone is trying to get in touch. Or don't care. Or both. All they care about is staring at that screen all day. LOL

My Droid X is the first phone I've ever had with a notification light. It's nice, but not a deal breaker. Although if I get an e-mail while I'm driving home at night, I HAVE to unlock the phone and at least clear the notification, otherwise I have that green light blinking at me from the middle of my dash for an hour, and it's very annoying.

My main issue with Samsung is updates. If you look at previous Samsung android phones you can see that some phones never even got an update. They might change this with this new line of phones, but my prediction is 1 OS update and that call it done.

I agree, this was the main reason I went to VWZ and ditched T-Mobile and The Samsung Behold 2 I had
