installation aborted when installing cyanogen mod 6 on (sprint) cdma htc hero with google

im trying to flash the cyanogen mod 6 (V6.0.0-RC1) on my cdma hero and it keeps saying E:Can't open /sdcard/update-cm-6.0.0-heroc-rc1-signed.zip (bad) installation abborted...
what does this mean and why?

im assuming its the zip file? so where can i download a working version of android 2.2 (froyo) for my cdma hero? i got this download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755795

Did you already root your Sprint HTC Hero? What method did you use to root it? I forget if you mentioned that already since there are about ten different threads from you. The ROM image has to be in the root of your handset's microSD card and not in any folders.

It could be that ROM that you are using is corrupted. Try getting it directly from the CyanogenMod website. The zip file you showed in your post does look like the correct name at least. I do not know why it would abort though.

yes i stayed up until 6 in the morning last night rooting. and i was successful! and yes i also placed it in the root of the sd card. someone else also said it may have been corrupted... but i got it off the good website... and i cant find where else i can get a good version of android 2.2? all the other places say they were ported from the nextus 1 and half the features dont work. and i had trouble with the cyanogenmod website. can you give me a link to the working version of it by any chance?

I hope that helps you out. I would grab the Google Add-on pack file too because CyanogenMod 6 does not include all the stock Google apps by default.

I found it the other day and I was stupid and did not bookmark it when I had the chance. It took me about ten minutes of searching to find it again.

You are right in that it is not easy to find things on the CyanogenMod website. I definitely bookmarked it this time.

If your going to download the RC1, I would suggest downloading the more recent nightlies, as the RC1 is almost a month old now

It might have just been something cockeyed with his Sprint HTC Hero. All I know is that he said he did not have any issues with the CyanogenMod 6 RC1. Your mileage may vary. I am not trying to dissuade anyone from using the nightlies.

True, the RC1 is the stable version of the CM6

But after 20 some nightlies since the RC1, I would still recommend the most recent nightly before the RC1, imo

Download and flash a nightly as you would the RC1 (or any rom for that matter), as LB said, just make sure you have the addons to go along with the nightlies

hmm. im starting to get a little confused, i was under the impression (from things i read) that nightlies was something that updated your phone at night when they had new bug fixes? is that completely wrong? and right now im going to put in 6.0.0 rc1 and the Google Addon MDPI-20100816 that you guys linked me to. where should i go after that? will that be done? or more to work with?

Like andygu3 said, you would flash a CyanogenMod 6 nightly ROM the same way as you flash the RC1 ROM. Here is the link to the nightlies: Index of /cm/nightly/heroc/ . I would choose the latest one if you decide to flash a nightly ROM.

Again, it took me some time to find them. But now I see where everything is finally. It is all separated by what handset model you have in the forums section. It is not so hard to navigate once you realize that.

no worries its fine i understand now. what you said makes perfect sence, nightly = rc1 (in comparison) like both are roms to flash. i misunderstood reading from last night and thought it was a program that upated rc1 with the newest bugfixes but i understand that now

If you do not feel like flashing nightly ROMs then you can just stick with the CyanogenMod 6 RC1 ROM. It is a stable release. Then you can just wait for the next RC, which would be RC2. RC stands for Release Candidate and it basically is the step before software goes into final build and ready to be a public release, speaking in terms of software development at least.

I am not 100% sure, but I think you can just wipe the "Dalvik Cache" in recovery, when you boot up your Sprint HTC Hero, and then flash the nightly ROM over top of the last ROM without losing your settings and apps. If am I wrong, someone who has more knowledge correct me on this. I do not want to lead anyone down the wrong path. I am only going on what I have learned through research.

Updates for 2.2? That's what the nightlies are, nightly updates

Darch and Cyanogen will get all the bugs out and then release the RC2...

My suggestion to you is, stick with the RC1 until the RC2 comes out! Don't worry about the nightlies as the RC1 is stable for everyday use, I'm sure someone will link the RC2 on these forums when it comes out

Yes, you can flash a nightly ROM over the CyanogenMod 6 RC1 ROM. You can also flash a nightly ROM over a previous nightly ROM I believe.

There is a certain way to do this though so that you do not have to completely wipe your Sprint HTC Hero. I am not completely sure if what I said previously about Dalvik Cache was correct, so I would ask someone who knows for sure.

Yes, that is the basic gist of it. It works the same way when someone releases any program that is in beta form, even a major operating system like Microsoft Windows goes through Release Candidates before being finalized.

It all about finding the bugs in each release and getting rid of them. That is my understanding of it.

Correct, the individuals who find bugs report them and then a new nightly comes out.

For instance, 910 and the 911 had a bug in the notification sounds. 912, the bug was found and fixed

ok sweet! i appreciate all of this help so much! and i thanked all of your posts! haha any chance you could help me with the google addon thing? idk when or how to use that... do i do the same thing as i would with the actual cyanogen 6.0.0 mod? boot in recovery and let the phone flash/run it?
