Fascinate vs Droid X

The Fasinate has amazing hardware but is "crippled" by its software. But the galaxy S lineup phones are easily rootable and can run custom ROMs to fix that. (The GPS issues are fixable via a software update right?)

The Droid X on the other hand has an encrypted bootloader but has a larger fan base (due to Verizon's heavy advertisement for the phone).

Which phone do you think has more POTENTIAL in the long run?

Both phones currently run Android 2.1

Personally, my DX is having a lot of issues and I'm looking to switch to either a new DX or the Fascinate.

Link to similar thread in Droid X's forum.

IMO
Personally the Fascinate will, but won't be as known as the DroidX. The Fascinate is not "crippled" as you say. I really so no difference in software, except the UI. The Fascinate has the Super AMOLED screen, and only .3" smaller than the DroidX. The Galaxy S Series has much potential because of the support from Samsung directly. The DroidX has the appeal to the "Droid fans" while the Fascinate is appealed to the hardware fans, like me. And with the camera options on the Fascinate, they really outdo the DroidX.

I don't think the Fascinate is crippled at all. I think the Bing search thing has been blown way out of proportion.

I think they both have great potential, but I believe the Droid X will receive the most attention and flourish a little more on the basis it's Verizon's Droid baby.

I think they're both great phones and I think they both have the potential for great things in the future.

I had the DX, and while I liked it, I found the Fascinate a bit more fitting.

Why?

1. Size - I have medium size hands. For me the DX was just a little bit too large for one handed use. I had to really stretch my thumb to get the top of the screen.

2. Screen - It's hard to argue with the AMOLED screen on the Fascinate. Simply put, it's gorgeous.

3. BOGO - Really? I couldn't believe they had this thing on BOGO. Scored two.

4. Slim - The DX is thin, but the Fascinate is noticeably thinner. It's very pocket friendly, even with a silicon case on the back.

5. GPU - I'm hoping Android will get some quality games soon in the Marketplace. Angry Birds is a start. I love the ability to game on the go.

6. Touch keys - I wasn't a fan of the hard keys on the DX. They wiggled and felt a bit cheap. The only problem I have with the Fascinate is the known issue with the lights. According to BGR, it'll be resolved in an update.

7. Battery Life - I've been abusing my Fascinate ALL DAY....Its now 11PM and I still have around 25%.

You really can't go wrong with either phone. In the end, it comes down to personal preference.

What do you mean the issue with the lights? The softkeys? Honestly it's not that big of an issue. The Droid1's softkeys would only turn on in dark light if it felt like it. lol.

The Fascinate definitely has more potential for the following reasons.

Yes, the Fascinate has a few minor issues but none of them is big enough to be a show-stopper. And frankly, every phone has its issue.

The Fascinate has the finesse look that no other Android phone currently on the market has. This phone provides a complete mobile experience that attracts both women and men (contrary to the X which targets primarily the men, so it loses half of the population there).

What matters to the consumers (I mean general consumers and not only hard-core techies) is the complete package that provides an excellent mobile experience. That is what consumers care about, and that is why the iPhone has been so successful even though the iPhone has some minor issues (e.g. no SD card). In my humble opinion, the Fascinate is the first Android phone that can truly compete head-to-head with the iPhone. I think the Fascinate is the true iPhone killer that we have been looking for in years because it targets the exact same consumer demographics.

You need to understand that majority of the consumers do not care about the technical details like Bing Search over Google Search, or TouchWiz vs Sense, or rooted vs non-rooted. I understand these things might be very important to the people on this forum. But what percentage of consumers nationwide come and visit this forum? We are only a small minority. Majority of the consumers care only if the phone can provide an excellent mobile experience or not...no more and no less.

I think the other Android phone manufacturers should take notes on this. :)

:)

Now that is some funny stuff you just wrote........

The only thing that will be an iPhone killer is the actual iPhone on VZW.

Now lets read this together:
http://gorumors.com/crunchies/how-many-iphones-have-been-sold-to-date/

This brings the total number of iPhones sold since its launch in 2007 to 51.15 million

I think the fascinate is a better media/entertainment phone:
-better gpu for gaming
-better screen for media
-louder speaker
-better support for various media types

I think the X is a more solid phone from a basics standpoint... internet, phone, gps
-Better cell reception
-Very good mic sound quality and noise cancellation
-Better battery life (only marginally so though)
-Solid GPS
-Larger, higher resolution screen makes browsing a bit easier

This is actually a good thread. I currently have the Fascinate and so far I am digging it. If for some reason I change my mind during the next 27 days, The DX will be its replacement.

It would be great to know what made DX owners come to the Fascinate & it would be great to know why any Fascinate owner leaves for the DX, or even the DInc for that matter.

Don't forget the fact that the X has NOTIFICATION LED...I can't comprehend how a manufacturer does not include this basic feature on a smartphone.

If sound quality for music through the 3.5mm is a concern, Fascinate destroys the X. The Droid, Droid 2 and X all have one common weakness (besides the annoying sd card behind battery) and that is weak sound quality.

Phone ranks:

1. Galaxy S (all variants use the same great DAC)
2. N900 (same chipset as Droid, but has built in amp)
3. Incredible
4. Droid, Droid 2 and X have same weak output like the Archos media players (NOT devices for music fans). All use omap chips and none have a built-in amp to help the audio out.

If a maintenance release/bug fix update isn't available before the 30 days are up on the Fascinate, I may be exchanging it for the DX, if the store will honor a BOGA for the X because my wife loves her Fascinate that I got as a BOGO.

My complaints/issues with the Fascinate:

-Very slow to acquire GPS lock (I use Google Nav daily to see traffic problems along my route).
-Low volume while in Google Nav.
-Soft Key backlight times out too fast and no setting available to adjust.

But my number one reason for exchanging the Fascinate for an X (if I do), is for the cell reception and in-call audio quality. So far, the Motorolas excel in this area when compared to HTC, and Samsung.

There is also a Text input Lag on the Fascinate.

Can you get Google Voice Turn by turn directions on the Fascinate?

Do you mean lag with haptic feedback on, or lag without it? I'm coming from an Incredible (been playing with the other Galaxy S variants for *FOREVER* now) and even it would stutter with feedback on, but was flawless in normal typing and Swype.

I have haptic feedback on and I'm using the stock android keyboard, not swype.

I dunno....Maybe he's talking about a particular app? Because I text quite a bit and the letters are showing up as quickly as I can type them.

I came from an Eris...NOW THAT HAD LAG! But honestly maybe what he's considering lag, I'm not. People perceive things differently. But I can't imagine it going any faster.

I looked heavily at the X myself. Everyone complains about the SF and its software issues but the software issues can be addressed, hardware cannot. So I went with the SF over the DX because I didnt like the DX hump, I preferred the form factor of the SF, the SuperAMOLED and the superior cpu/gpu combo. The HMDI of the DX is a hardware issue I wish the SF had but who knows we might get some of microusb-hdmi combo.

Now lets read this together:
How Many iPhones Have Been Sold To Date — Tech Crunchies
I have been waiting for the iPhone to come to Verizon and I have been monitoring all the gossips and rumors. None of them has ever come true. Based on my observation, I think Apple is waiting for Verizon to deploy LTE, and they will deliver an LTE version of iPhone to Verizon.

However, Apple probably has under-estimated the potential of Android. Just look at the last 6-12 months, the development and enhancement of Android phones are phenomenal! In my humble opinion, the Fascinate is the end result that Android phone has finally grown up to be a true competitor of the iPhone.

It will take at least 12 months for the iPhone to land on Verizon (which is an optimistic timeline). By then, the Android phone should leapfrog the iPhone or whatever phone Apple gives to Verizon.

And frankly, almost every person that I know has an iPhone and I am getting sick of it. For example, if everyone I know is wearing the same Bebe dress, I am not going to buy one.

I think many people feel the same. Just that there was no equivalence out there for them to switch to... until now. :)

Very good and accurate assessment there. Funny thing is arguable the SF is the closest thing to the older iphone 3GS, in terms of form factor and side scrolling apps versus the normal north south. God in heaven knows when and if the phone ever gets to VZW, I wasnt waiting anymore. Besides as you say every other month some new android phone comes out and wows us
