Root To root or not to root?

Hey everyone, I am new here and know nothing about android phones. I have been an apple fanboy since the first iPhone was realized. Anyways, I picked up an iphone 4 a couple weeks ago only to find that it was absolutely useless at my house because of its terrible reception. So I jumped on a verizon family plan and ordered a droid x, which should be here tomorrow. I am very excited to have something new to mod.

I have never heard of rooting before until I started lurking here a couple days ago. How similar is it to jailbreaking an iPhone? I use mac osx, would this be a problem?

I was in the same boat. It was easy to root. I used the universal androot or what ever its called. Its in the root sticky.

It's similar to the iPhone's Jailbreaking in what it allows you to do, however, it's giving you root (or Admin) privileges to your phone and it's hardware.

I would say go for it, you can always un-root.

Rooting isn't something where you might press something in your pocket and have the phone self-destruct or anything. (Note: I am in no way responsible if you attach a mini-bomb to the phone and press the detonator whilst it's in your pocket with your phone thus causing your phone to self destruct, i would consider that a loophole.)

I also came from an iPhone, had a 3Gs, and moved to Verizon and a Droid X. I jailbroke mu 3Gs within a week of getting it, because there was stuff I wanted to do with it that Apple didn't want me doing for some reason. I've been using my DX for about 2 weeks so far, and I haven't seen a compelling reason to do it other than because it can be done. I haven't run into anything I wanted to do that I wasn't able to do, so why bother?

I'm going to be watching this thread. I'm waiting for my Droid X to ship (rather impatiently I might add!) And I haven't decided if i'm going to Root or not. Can't see the benefits at the moment.. can someone steer us newbies one way or the other?

God yes, the iPhone was waaaay to basic without a jailbreak, it had to be done. I had folders, live weather, multitasking, 3rd party apps, all sorts of cool stuff going on. And the dropping calls crap is why I switched, actually. I rarely made phone calls, but my wife makes plenty, and she was having issues with dropped calls and poor call quality. Good enough excuse for me to jump to Android!

As for root, like I said before, I haven't run across anything that made me say "Dang, if only I was rooted so I could do that!" Granted, it's only been a couiple weeks, but I have it set up pretty much how I like it. Your results may vary.

Now Free wifi tethering "IS" worth it. I don't have internet at work, if I could use my cell to connect my laptop to internet, that would be Awesome! I REALLY wish I knew how to do this. As long as my phone won't have any problems. Any experts on this?

First, begin with rooting your phone if you haven't already. There are plenty of step by step instructions (search for universalandroot on this subforum). You have to be running android O.S. 2.1 to do this.

Then, download a tether app like Wifi tether for root users or Barnacle. They are pretty self explanatory to be quite honest, but if you need help, don't hesitate to ask us!

I've got universalandroot and titanium back up sitting in my app drawer...I can't seem to pull the trigger. I don't know what I'll do with it if I do. I guess I need to read up in this sub-section some more to see if it's worth it for me.

Rooting itself isn't a big deal, really.

Now if you go blindly into the world of ROMs and Themes, then I'd watch out!

I'd love to have free hot-spot tethering, and ad free apps. But what does backing up roms mean? What is ROM? Is it like RAM or a hard drive in a computer, or something else..?
