The Rogers Magic 2.1 Thread

Hey there,
Got a question for the collective knowlege base- After a successfull OTA update, everything works well except the Google Voice feature.
If I try any voice feature (dialing, search, maps, etc) it instantly goes to forced close.
So the question is can I reload the update? (are the files stored on the phone) because if I do a phone software check I'm told that it is up to date.
A soft reset doesn't help and I want to avoid a manual download up date.
I guess if anyone knows if there is a google voice apk somewhere that would work too.
Thanks in advanced,
Erland

Google Voice Search is in the market. You need to get Google Search too. Perhaps they will clear up your problem.

Not for 2.1 users, apparently...

Yes, GV on the phone is for 2.2 only. It might not work right from Canada anyway which is the typical case for us. You need to setup GV first anyway so try it on a pc. The first problem might be a notice that you can't setup from Canada so you need to use a proxy from the U.S. The next problem is that the CA number you enter will probably tell you that "international" numbers are not yet possible. Then you can try a U.S. based SIP number that you've setup and routed back to CA and to your cell. At that point it will work except it won't when initiated from the cell because the access number won't route past Rogers.
So.... what you can do is to use GV from a browser, if you initiate the call via the browser it will ring back to your cell and it continues normally. The other way and easier way is to make calls directly from the pc via Gmail. Look below the Chat and you should see Call Phone. With a headset that works fine.

Thanks all for all the answers to the Google voice issue- just seems there is never an easy answer.
But as I get to know the 2.1 update, I get more and more forced close on the system and downloaded apps. Downloaded apps are easy to deal with but I'm wondering if I should re update my phone?
-The main question is, can I redo a OTA? I get the phone (Rogers Magic) to check for an update but it tells me it is up to date.
-Are the files still on the phone? Can you restart the update process?
-I could do a manual update, but some have suggested the manual update from HTC is buggy? Any news on that?
Thanks all,
Regards,
Erland

I too have noticed some apps (like the Salon.com app) have hung my phone and then caused some process's to force close. My wifes phone is worse. Her phone is exhibiting the following behaviours
- the phone will psuedo reboot, as in its not a full restart, just that the phone reloads the Sense interface starting with the HTC quietly brilliant screen. it will randomly do this.
- her twitter app will randomly fail to connect even tho there is a full wifi signal available here
- she has missed calls even with full bars. yesterday i called her 3 times, the first 2 were long pauses with a dump right to voicemail. the third time it went through. a friend also txted her saying she wasn't picking up her phone, even tho she had 4 bars. i think the update messed her phone up.

The main question is, can I redo a OTA? I get the phone (Rogers Magic) to check for an update but it tells me it is up to date.

I dont think there is a need to redo the OTA or reintall/reapply the the update. i am going to back up my wifes apps and wife it to factory reset. it should remain on the new 2.1 correct? since the phone has been flashed with the rogers update, a factory reset now would just make it an empty phone no?
