Help Bad day on the Galaxy

I'm a newbie on smartfones and had spent a few days adding useful apps to my Galaxy S.

File management and, file transfer applications to wireless link to my laptop followed by the transfer of all my work presentations (powerpoint) and lecture notes. All worked fine until today.
Now, my device seems to have lost all the downloaded and installed apps (leaving gaps on the desktop). It has also discarded the image I had chosen for my screen background, and I can't see an icon to go to the Android store.

Finally: on one of the screens I have the message "Problem loading widget".
That might be connected to the problem that Android Market has completely disappeared. How do I get that back!! It's important.

My transferred files are still sitting in folders in DCIM so that's good. but none of the special applications are visible.

Can someone give an opinion on this. Has something taken place online with Samsung that has put my system back to its out-of-box state. (Except for the A Market app).

Ideas appreciated.

First thing, grab everything you can from the SD(s) cards and back them up. There is an internal SD and optionally one that you install. Under Settings/Privacy is Factory Reset. Do that and start over. Play with it for a bit and make sure it is stable, otherwise take it back. There are issues with certain phones that might corrupt the internal card. Is it a Bell version by chance?

Thanks for reply. Not Bell. I'm in the UK, so Orange, but it doesn't have a specific Orange version OS.

No external SD card yet. Not sure how to back up or . If I can't do that, I'll just have to reset.
My files in Sdcard/DCIM seems intact. Will factory reset destroy those.

/sdcard/download/Orange Maps will not install.

Just plug in USB and mount as disk and copy anything from it that want to keep. Then do a factory reset. That might clear things up or tell you that you need to replace the device. These things are a bit sensitive as I've discovered. My HTC Magic has been a lot more forgiving and resilient.

Thanks. Done that. Feel more confident now that I have some control. I like to know how my system can be managed under such conditions.

As long as i can put it back to factory state I'll be happy. I remember going through multiple installs with Windows 3.1 after DOS. Probably did it 200 times!

Good forum. I'm sure I'll be back with something else.
