iPhone 4 owner, seriously considering on switching to Vibrant.

Hey guys, I'm with T-Mobile but using an unlocked iPhone 4 for now. I am just so sick of not having 3G. I love the way the Vibrant looks, but there are a couple of concerns that I want to address which would make or break my decision to purchase a Vibrant. Hope you Vibrant owners can help me out here.

Camera quality: The reason why I love the iPhone 4 is the camera. It takes magnificent pictures, even in macro mode. Does the Vibrant's camera compare? I know that it's a 5MP without flash, but do the pictures turn out well? How are close up pics?

Screen Quality: Another reason why I love the iPhone 4 is that awesome screen. Is the Vibrant's screen better than the iPhone 4's screen?

Tethering: Will I be able to tether both USB/HotSpot on the Vibrant?

FROYO: When does Android 2.2 OTA update get released?

OS: I love the fluid OS on the iPhone 4. Absolutely no lag and runs silky smooth. How is Android on the Vibrant? Are there lag issues?

No physical buttons: How does the Vibrant's touch-sensitive buttons compare to the Nexus one's? I've played with a Nexus One before and the buttons are stubborn and hard to press.

Camera quality is probably better on iPhone

Vibrant offers a better contrast ratio, but iPhone retina display has higher resolution. This is personal preference, you have to just use both. Expect visible pixels on the VIbrant. Retina display pixels are virtually invisible. The Vibrant displays awesome dark blacks, but it can't produce real true warm whites, an outcome of LED technology. However, I love the Super Amoled, I just wish the resolution was on par with Retina.

Tethering, yes it is possible, visit the tips and tricks section, read what I wrote there in the how to instructions.

Battery life on vibrant compared to iPhone, horrible. You will definitely complain about battery life.

Froyo release date, we don't know.

OS fluidity on Android? not really, expect many force closes and other problems. iOS is more fluid and polished around the corners.

Built quality? The iPhone 4 is amazing, it is like a work of art, so sturdy. Vibrant is okay in built quality, has a cheaper plastic feeling.

Vibrant faster 3G speeds? No this is false. The Vibrant is NOT a true HSPA+ phone. The upcoming G2 is. However, all current phones on T-mobiles network will benefit from HSPA+ towers.

BEFORE people start screaming at me, I just wanted my reply to be honest. As much as I love the Vibrant, I'm not going to lie about the true differences between the two phones.

I don't agree the build quality of the IPhone 4 is better. I actually felt the all glass Iphone felt horrible and it is know for being as fragile as a china doll. I've dropped my vibrant running at 4mph SEVERAL times and it is fine! I wouldn't drop an Iphone 4....

As for the pic quality, I'd say it is in b/t an Iphone 3gs and an Iphone 4.

As for screen quality, I'd say the same- in b/t a 3gs and a 4. However, it isn't nearly as breakable as the IPhone 4.

Tethering- YES YES YES! To me that would be a huge reason to switch. None of the regular tethering instructions worked for me but I got an app that works nicely. You can get PDA net or Easy tether if you can't figure out how to manually set it up.

Another advantage of the Vibrant is the larger screen size! I wouldn't want less than a 4 inch screen ever again!

The speed I would imagine is faster than an unlocked Iphone off network. I know it is faster than the 3gs unlocked on tmob.

As for battery- it's true, you'll miss that LOL. But if you have a car charger and you don't mind plugging it in also at night while you sleep, it doesn't really matter.

-I should add I bought an iPhone 4 and returned it in favor of the vibrant. So I've played with both side by side.

Camera: It is great. If you would like, I could upload a few random photos i took around the house of things close up. Flash is not necessary because there is a "night mode" which takes excellent pictures in low lighting.

Screen: This phone has a Super AMOLED, and while the iphone 4's screen has a higher pixel density, I have played with my cousins iphone 4 screen right next to my vibrant and i actually prefer the vibrant, not only because it is bigger but something about the colors just seem more pure.

Tethering: If you root your phone (the equivalent of jailbreaking an iphone) it is very simple to send a wireless hotspot, and if you dont root you can easily usb/bluetooth tether with an app off of the market.

Froyo: 2.2 is said to be released over the air sometime this month.

OS: There are some lag issues on a stock vibrant, but this can be VERY easily fixed on a rooted vibrant, and froyo is said to eliminate lag.

Buttons: The buttons have worked very well for me, i thought i was going to accidentally hit them sometimes but that has yet to happen.

Battery: I don't exactly know how well the iphone 4's battery is, but the vibrant easily makes it through my day. The screen technology is a very energy efficient, because each pixel is it's own separate light source. This means whenever there is black, the pixels in that area are actually off.

Build quality: I too was concerned about this.. And even though it is made of plastic i think samsung has done a very good job in making this phone. And from what i understand the vibrant has the same screen as the dell streak (gorilla glass)... YouTube - Dell Streak torture tested

3G: I am not positive how the 3g speeds compare to other phones (because i too came from an iphone on t-mobile ) but i know that this thing flies. It is a nice piece of hardware.

Like i mentioned before, I also am coming from an iphone. I am VERY happy i switched to android, simply because apple is not putting out the best product possible and the way everything is set up on android makes so much more sense to me. Apple is the only company making the iphone, so they do not have competition in that area. There are many companies making android phones and they are constantly competing, so you always get the best when you buy a new android phone because the companies are always trying to beat the other. my good friend has a iPhone4 and we often debate which is the better phone... the iPhone4 edges out the Vibrant on some features like a flash and a FFC and the build is nicer on the iPhone also.
as for the camera its a tie... wide by side they both take awesome pictures.
as for the screen... again a tie... it comes down to personal preference here.
hardware: again a tie they both by normal using with similar apps and games seem to run the same.
both have at least 1 major flaw... iPhone has the reception issue and the vibrant has a spotty (but still functional) GPS.
so really what it comes down to is personal preference... I like android... my buddy likes apple... but we both agree that both phones are great.

T-Zone will work on the vibrant for a few hours to a few days, then you will get a friendly reminder to update your data plan, and it will stop working.

The camera is magnificent, takes great pictures. The screen lives up to the hype, it's bright and doesn't look clarity in sunlight. The iPhone's screen looks good because it's so small. With 4 inches of real estate you see a more full picture.

Well I got front facing camera on my vibrant! So there. International version has it, no clue why the US wasnt included! But us Canadians have it.

The Camera on the vibrant is SO MUCH BETTER than an Iphone. anyone who tells you otherwise is a crack and an apple fanboy. the camera alone is worth the price of the phone. You do NOT need flash, look at my dark pictures thread. phone led flashes are only good up to 6 foot or so, and within that 6foot ratio everything looks washed out led white. AS FOR THE SCREEN, MY VIBRANT HAS PURE BLACKS AND PURE WHITES.

The roumor mill tells us that hotspot with 2.2 will be available. if not, oh well. as for tether via usb or bluetooth, most definately you can!

Take a sheet of silk, and spread butter and oil on it. smooth as hell. More smooth than the fonz even! AYEEEE!! but serious, its awesome.

I personally was a little iffy on the touch sensative buttons but ive become a fan. they are easy and quick and responsive.

Again, anyone who tells you otherwise is an idiot. The battery time is amazing. I use it heavily for talking, texting, games, bluetooth, and GPS.. My phone is on hour 34 now and i still have 35% battery left.

Its plastic, yes, but feels solid. its light weight but it holds its own.

Yes. The vibrant is one of the very few Tmobile phones that use their new HSPA network. It can deliver close to, if not on par, speeds of 4G

Some say yes, some say no. At the worst you'll have to pay 20 a month for internet but its well worth it on the vibrant.

I would like to mention I've owned an Iphone 3gS, and an Iphone 4. Some people have had problems with their vibrants, no different than people having problems with their Iphone 4.
While i do appreciate ''Samsung Vibrants'' contribution on the forums, please take his postings with a grain of salt. as they are fueled by anger and ignorance.

Thank you so much for all of your informative responses. Based on your personal reviews, it seems like the Vibrant is a great phone. The only thing that is holding me back now is this:

Can someone confirm this??? I previously had a Nexus One and had no such message or reminder. If this is indeed true, I don't think it's the phone for me. I have kept my $5.99 T-Zone plan for about 5 years and I don't want to lose it.

On topic, for me and my phone the battery has good days and bad. Eight hours in and I am at 50%. I have made no calls, no web access, no games or movies. Just texting. I make sure to press the power button as soon as I am done to put the screen to sleep to help conserve power. Two days ago I was abusing the heck out of the services and the battery lasted me all day, easily.

Some days are better than others for me with the battery.

I cannot contribute to any of the rest of the discussion as I have no experience with the other product.

I think the camera is real good. I dont have an iPhone 4 so i cant say which is better, but from what ive seen, they are very comparable.

Again, dont have a iP4 but the AMOLED screen is awesome.

Rarely on my phone but it has here and there while websurfing or somehting. 2.2 should fix it all. The screen is very fluid though. If i flip through say like my music, ....it is very fluid and works great. I had an iPhone for two years9Just opted not to get the iP4) before i got the Vibrant and i really think they are the same in that respect.

Never had a Nexus one either...lol. Buttons are fine. Sometimes i have to touch them twice with my screen protector on it.

Probably not as good but ....havent used a iP4 so i dont know how good it is but id guess the Vibrants wont be as good. But i have 4 batteries that cost me $3.27.

You kidding? The iPhone 4 is the biggest China Doll going. Its pretty but that dont = good built quality. I use a case on all my phones so it feels fine to me and it is a lot lighter than the iP4 and i like that.

And i will add, it takes a little while to get used to Android and really appreciate the system. Took me a good week coming from an iPhone of really using it and i loved the customizations i couldnt do on iPhone.

I don't have a iPhone4 so I don't know how good that camera is but I'm very happy with mine. And I have high standards; my regular cameras are a Canon 5D Mark II (21 MP, full frame) and a Rollieflex 6008i. I'm finding that I'm taking my Canon 5D Mark II less to social events nowadays. What is really awesome about Vibrant's camera is the automatic white balance!! It is awesome and I read about iPhone4's AWB's issues and seen pictures with the ugly yellow cast. The Vibrant's white balance blows my Canon 5D Mark II's away. Even when I manually color temperature calibrate the Canon using an 18% grey card, it rarely looks as nice as the AWB from the Vibrant. Could Canon borrow the AWB algorithm from Samsung for their next firmware release for my Canon 5D Mark II?? The video camera is awesome too and I don't remember saying, "I wish my Vibrant had a flash!" to myself. The only flash that is worth having in my opinion is one that mounts to a hot-shoe and can be swiveled so the flash can be bounce from a wall or ceiling. And no that would not be the flash on the iPhone4.

I haven't seen the iPhone4's screen but do work on a iMac that has a LED backlit IPS screen. I'm sure the extra resolution is nice but since I don't have good eyesight I have to blow up the text real big so that doesn't matter to me. As for colors, while the LED backlit IPS is good, it no match for SAMOLED. This is a matter of preference.

My Vibrant has lag now and then but not a big issue for me. If that really bothers you, there are fixes for that. I'm hearing that future firmware updates should alleviate/eliminate this issue.

I don't have problems with the capacitive buttons on my Vibrant and it sure is nice to have more than one button at the bottom. I do wish the Vibrant has external buttons for things like FFwd/Rwd and next/previous songs/videos but iPhone4 doesn't have that either.

I'm happy enough with my battery life (a day of my normal use and have 50 - 60 % left when I get home) and if I really needed more "life" there's always cheap batteries I can swap in. I'm sure iPhone4's battery life is great though.

To my horror I dropped my Vibrant on pavement with lots of dangerous looking pebbles from waist high but my phone just bounced back with just a nick on the edge of the phone. What would happen to your iPhone4 if you had done that? It's good enough for me.

I get awesome 3G speeds on my phone. Sometime it almost feels like I'm on wi-fi! 3-5 Mbits/down and 1+ Mbits up. Even at highway speeds I get ~2+ Mbits/down! Don't know about other phones but that is one aspect I'm not worried about.

T-Zone plan: Will I still be able to use my old $5 T-Zone plan on the Vibrant?

I have no idea. If you really wanted to keep that plan maybe you should go back to your Nexus One which is also a great phone that is supposed to get excellent 3G speeds on T-Mo just like the Vibrant.

If you like your iPhone4 a lot and want to also get 3G connection, perhaps you should really consider switching to AT&T.
