O hi O
I just received a droid 2 a couple of days ago when i had called and complained about my droid 1 not working correctly . After calling i started reading about the OTA problems and found out it was the radio that was downloaded, so i loaded the new complete download with help from John G and all is now working great. My question is should i keep the 1 which can be modified completely via bootloader ,oc'd etc. or keep the 2 which is already running 1k cpu with a locked bootie .I'm aware that it's just a matter of time until someone unlocks it .I'm new to modifying and all so i hope the terminology is close to correct. I just want to keep the right phone because i only have about 3 months left on the 12 mo. warr. and im not sure how many times VZW replaces under warranty, and have heard that i was lucky to get the 2 for replacement considering i never asked for it ,they just sent it.I have to decide which phone to keep because they sent an e-mail that after 10 days they would be charging me 500.00 for it and im on day 6...Hope this is in the right place..thanks in advance for any help....Ron.m

Tough call....a few comments (I got a D2 warranty replacement for my D1, and am keeping the D2):

- D2 has faster processor, more RAM, and is prettier :)

- But it can't be OC'd (yet, and maybe not ever, who knows) and even if it is OC'd unclear how much additional oomph will be available

- D1 ROM community is very active, tons of ROMs, D2 ROM community is still very small, not too much going on at this point, who knows how it will end up...

- D1 is clean google phone, D2 is layered w/silly Moto Blur...there are already early ROMs available to remove/reduce the Blur, so Blur should not be a big issue if you're rooting

- D2 keyboard is really nice...if you're a keyboard user that might be enough to justify switching

As noted, I kept the D2...already as fast/faster than my OC'd D1, Launcher Pro removes Blur from the home screen UI, early Blur-cleaned ROMs are already showing up and more should come. Slayher (Theme dev) is working on building the CyanogenMod ROM for the D2 (he has one), so that's a good sign for me since I love the CM ROM on the D1.

Happy choosing...

I'm loving the 2 over the 1.

As mentioned by red, the biggest downfalls of the d2 are it isn't vanilla android and the locked bootloader.

That being said, this thing blows away what my d1 would do as far as raw functionality. I have switched between epic 1.1 and my stock deblurred rom and can not complain with either one.

I may try out tranquility soon just for balance.

I imagine the bootloader will be unlocked at some point, but I dont have any issues with the speed/performance as is :)

Are you going to release your deblurred ROM?

Thanks.. I activated the 2 just for a look and i really like it. Im keeping the 2 and sending the 1 back . It.s already running faster than my buddy's OC"d 1 and no noticable snags,

So what all has to be shipped back with the old phone when i send it back to verizon?
The 2 is new in retial box and had everything, sd card ( 8g not 16g like the 1) battery and charger...

Thanks alot for all the input ...Ron.m

did you have to ask for the D2? or did you have to take an chance and hope for the best?

I was actually offered it by a VZW rep w/out me asking or even thinking of it after my 3rd D1 refurb was a no-go.

Her boss cancelled it, and I got three more refurbs before leaving some really pointed feedback on their post-call survey line. Supervisor called me back, told him my sob story (six bad D1s) and he did the right thing and got me a new D2.

how did you all get 2's? orignal d1 owner im very tempted to try!

It wasn't easy, imo..and is NOT worth the trouble of trying to get a D2 as a replacement. I went through 4 original Droid refrub replacements before they even offered me a Droid 2. I was so fed up with shitty warranty replacements that I would be happy with a 100% functional D1, much less a D2. First one, the screen was almost ready to come off the phone. Second one, the right half of the physical keyboard wouldn't work. Third one, wouldn't read any SD cards. Fourth and final D1, wouldn't even power on. After I threatened to cancel my service (this is the second time this has happened with mine and my wife's phones...we both went through 6 BB Tours between us before switching to Android) the guy reluctantly told me they would be sending me a Droid 2 as a replacement. I definately didn't have to ask for one, but I also told him I didn't give a damn what phone they sent me as long as it works and actually is "recertified like new".
