Root Whats the benefits of rooting?

Because I am feeling nice :D
Why Root - Android Wiki

BTW... what is your level of expertise when it comes to technology? Are you familiar with Linux? Have you ever rooted (or jailbroken) any devises before?

If you answer is no, I highly suggest reading anything and everything you can find about rooting before even considering it. Thanks to Unrevoked the process of rooting the phone is pretty simple and strait forward now, but it scares me to think of people who don't have the slightest clue what they are doing having that kind of access.

And since rooting your phone voids your warranty, if anything goes wrong it's all on you. On you to either fix it or gather up a couple hundreds bucks for a replacement.

Much faster performance, I've almost doubled my battery life, the look and feel is much more customizable, free wirless teather, the list goes on and on. But honestly it's a whole new phone after you've rooted and found the right rom and kernal. Plus if you get bored you can just change it up again.
It's really fantastic, I don't see why anyone wouldn't root

did they come up with 2.2 root that i didnt read about?

Unrevoked is currently testing 3.21 which will root 2.2. Actually, they were done with it but then pulled it because of two problems that were reported with Evo phones. One turned out to not even be a problem and it looks like the second is user error. No problems from Incredible owners though. Many people here have used the test version (including myself) without any problems.

I got a great reason not to root. If you don't even understand what rooting is, you shouldn't do it. Plain and simple.

I jailbroke an iPhone for a friend. Phone was working perfect until she decided she wanted to go play with things she didn't understand. So a week later she starts messing around and removing things that are needed and killed the phone. And no, she didn't do a backup before messing around.

I have another friend who rooted his Moto Droid. He bricked his first one while trying to root. Decided to try it with his replacement and actually got it rooted, but managed to brick it the next day while messing around.

I have Jailbroken an Itouch before and loaded several cracked os's onto my blackberry. I am pretty tech savy but messing with android is new for me! Also have they come up with a way to move text messages from blackberry to android yet?

Okay good :D You got some idea of what you are doing!

I learned everything I needed to know about Android from this forum. VERY helpful. Just read up, absorb all the info you can and go for it.

Good point, before I got an Android phone I didn't even know you could hack a phone and make it better, Ididn't even know you could do it to a PC . But I got a Droid then an Eris , then an Incredible and joined this site, looked around , read up a little. Now I am extremely confident in rooting and the phones in general to the point I've rooted a few friends EVO, Eris, Droid and Increibles for them . Set things up and told them not to mess with anything until asking me or researching it online.
I guess what I'm saying is if Ican do it, anyone can cause I'm a tech moron

Is it really all that difficult? I remember a site for jailbreaking an Ipod and all you had to do was go to the site and click "jailbreak" or something like that(never did it). Im not sure about android considering Ive barely used an android device, but I think it might be a good idea to avoid rooting. Especially since im so computer stupid. I have yet to even get my hands on an Inc (About a week a way!! :p) so ill prolly just keep it stock for now.

My experiance with computers is simply moving files around and such in a game to get some different effects. And that took me SEVERAL uninstalls, restarts and head achs...even with directions.

And the stock battery is increased? why wouldn't this be standard in the phone if it possible to do?

Because they want your money on accessories (chargers, batteries, etc). I'm not saying they made it intentionally bad, just that they will only work on fixing it so hard. It's easy when you undervolt the CPU a bit. Also, I use setCPU to put my CPU at 245MHz any time the screen is off and I see great battery life.

There's no end to what you can do with the phone once it's rooted.

If you're talking about the "3G Mobile Hotspot" app, no you don't. That requires a $30 monthly fee to Verizon to make use of.

On rooting, I can't believe I waited as long as I did. It's like an entirely new phone.

i could be wrong about if i am getting charged, but i just opened the 3G mobile hotspot and set a password for it. it never said it would charge me a fee. my coworker just pulled up the WIfi. I do plan on rooting in the future, but it looks to me like there is no $30 fee on my phone.

Keep in mind one thing...

You're using Verizon's app. It is a closed source app. You have no idea what code is going on in the background. My hunch is that it does some side communicating to VZW's servers as you use it (and it most definitely would if I designed it to stop little work arounds like this).

Better to root and use an app that you can trust a lot more than something that VZW preinstalled on your phone.

Just wait until you get your bill and see that $20 charge ;)

All the information you need it right on Verizon's website.

No. If you don't have it setup right you cannot surf through it, it will just redirect to a verizon page saying you need a mobile connect plan.

Guys, stop posting misinformation. You KNOW that you are making stuff up, so why do it? I don't understand. You think that you have to always look like you have the answer or a response to everything? Grow up. Don't post bullcrap.
