Verizon reverting to old paterns I thought were long gone

I could see if you were able to get google search from the market but you cant even do that. shame... you are still able to get maps though.

I've heard word that Google's planning on making Android more "modular" by releasing a lot of the core components as apps that can come either pre-installed with the phone or that the user can download from the Market. It would help solve all these idiotic sell-out phones to Microsoft's Bing search engine.

I'm seeing a trend. MS HAD the world but just didn't listen to it customers and now they are trying to buy their software back into devices to make a come back. Their WinMo has sucked forever. The first Iphone couldn't do what winmo could, but it was buggy as hell and the user interface was crap. Their OS was the king for so long and now pick a flavor of linux and it's at least as stable and basicly free. MS Office comes in at a whopping $400 now. That's dam near $800 for just the OS and Office are they mad? Their xbox was crap more then half the units sold have been refurbished by now and their xbox live member ship just went up $10....while the quality of their services has dropped. And nearly every thing on that dam box costs you money or is advertisement so you'll spend money.

MS sucks, face it. They may be the best in the business world but for home machines they want so much more then the competition it's not even funny anymore.

Verizon has always sucked. sure they need money like every other company but they don't play fair and everyone is catching on. Their refurbs are a joke at best. They are the only ones that will charge you for incoming txt messages, even from their own phones. And speaking of: They lock you into a contract for 2 years by saying they are paying for part of your phone, that has their name on it, they decide what's on it and it only works on their network. That sounds more like a lease with a free 2 year commitment for them. Sure MSRP is $500 on these devices but since when does anyone pay MSRP?

In a capitalistic society the customer will go with innovation....unless you lock them into a 2 year contract.

History does repeat itself. I remember back when I had to seem edit my Moto V710 to back functionality that Verizon made Moto disable. Then the E815, then my razor, and my razor 2 had us celluar firmware on it. The D1 was a hit so everything after it Verizon made Moto lock down. Now this bing business. I cringe to think of bing as the default search engine for a google based phone. Its like an elevator in an outhouse....it just doesnt belong.

OKAAY?
Off topic....
Don't care.

Yes! Let's continue crying about small changes that are annoying and can be manuvered around instead.

Bing is a better search engine even if it is an insult to anyone with eyes. VZ Navigator is decent but not worth paying for even if Google Maps wasn't available. Everyone is trying to get paid and everyone is trying to get crap for free.

The more you offer a person, the more they demand. There was a time when people were thankful they could get a signal. Now a phone had better have a retinal display and make me a sammich!

I am not saying "Suck it up, you get what we give!" I am just saying that life is not Burger King, you can't always have it your way without paying a price. I do applaud those that are taking it upon themselves to create the experience they want and hope that more people follow suit.

The thing is I've used Verizon for 12 years now (wow, I can't believe it'd been that long!), and living in a big city, we have plenty coverage from all the big carriers. If they don't release a Google Experience phone by the time my contract is up, I'm out! Given this will be another year or so, but still, I'm not dealing with the bloats$$t they put on everything else. If I have to move to TM or Sprint, so be it. I love Android and Android only. The recent article on Engadget really struck a chord in me:

Exactly. I'm in New York City. I could get virtually identical coverage with any carrier, and it would cost less too. I read that Engadget article last night and I feel the same way. Hell, even Google does, I heard them say something about Gingerbread making manufacturer skinning "unnecessary". Hear that, even Google doesn't want your BS.

I'm all with you! It really depends on whether we move to a smaller city where coverage is more scarce, but either way, once my contract is up, it's Google Experience phone or nothing! :D

I'm not moving. Well, not from New York City. I may be moving to Sprint, though. ;)

Google should have a requirement for allowing their proprietary Google apps package that states that the phone must not be themed by the manufacturer and that all of the core functionality (Maps, mail apps, GOOGLE FRICKIN SEARCH) must be intact. They can offer their alternatives in the Market if they REALLY want to. Hell, they can probably even ensure that the apps are specific to their devices by editing the phone's build.prop line. I don't care. I just want them to stop tampering with a good thing.

Well, Motorola has taken their shit MOTOBLUR away. Samsung still has its "different" layout on its Android phones; it isn't Home. They need to do away with Sense. Every phone HTC has made without Sense has gone on to do very well. The Nexus One, MT3G, and the G1 which started it all. Take a hint.

I think Samsung's Galaxy S layout is one of my favorites. Granted, stock Android is still THE best, but there are some great functions in Samsung's skin, such as the fact that you can control Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 4G (on the Epic), and something else I can't remember, all from the notifications bar.

Screw the iPhone, I'm getting a Streak!

The Streak isn't Google Experience either, is it? And 5" is a little too much in a phone, and I always say that I want a huge phone. Maybe 4.5-4.7", but 5" is just huge. It needs to fit in my pockets.

No, it's skinned by Dell, but it looks okay to me. I'm just frustrated with Verizon. I left At&t to get a droid. Now I have a phone that won't work overseas, is on a slower network than my wife's Captivate, and I can't talk on the phone and look up something on the net at the same time. The Droid is an awesome phone, but VZW's network strangles it. All my pants have cargo pockets, so no worries about it fitting in a pocket for me. I think 5" is about as big a phone as I would go though. I used to carry an Apple Newton, it's a bit too big.

AT&T might be a hair faster but at least Verizon doesn't cut off randomly. It's because CDMA just has better management of towers than GSM; with GSM you have to "jump" from one tower to the next while CDMA "hands you off" to the next closest tower when the tower you're connected to starts to get out of range. I've NEVER found myself needing to use the internet and phone simultaneously, but I don't talk on the phone much. Verizon might be destroying user experience in the name of greed, but AT&T is far, far worse.

When will Verizon learn? The nickels and dimes they can make from people that aren't crafty enough to unlock the devices that they locked down pale in comparison to the millions they made on Droid sales.

I think this is Verizon's attempt to be more than just a "dumb pipe". For years, they were the boss. Wanna download a pic? Pay us. Want navigation? Pay us. Want to press the button "1" duringi peak hours? Pay us.

With Android being open, and sharing all that free love and peace, it's almost like the perfect marketing ploy. They can go to consumers wanting choice. We're free! We're not nazis like Apple! Mr. Schmidt, tear down this wall! And the consumers bought into it.

But Android can go to the big boys wanting money- the networks, handset manufacturers. They can say, Fed up with Apple? Be free! Use Android, do as you wish with it. They can add a new UI, change search engines, add bloatware, replace the free Google apps with their own pay as you go apps. So they see it as a profitable alternative to Apple.

The bottom line is that somebody's gotta get paid. Whether it's the handset company, the network, developers, or all three. Our phones are profit machines. Those early, heady idealistic days of waxing poetic about the openness and freedom of Android was a bit of a farce. It's about money, plain and simple.

I have to admit that I do not like what I am seeing from Verizon. Blocking Google search and creating their own app store. It seem like big steps in the wrong direction.

I am thinking about breaking my contract and moving to the iPhone. If you have to live in a locked down world you might as well go with the one that can easily sync video and audio with the phone....( Getting movies on the Droid is a pain... )

I am liking Verizon less and less every day.....

Why do people keep saying they are going to iphone on at&t? you're only gonna be even more locked down from way way way more things than whats happening now with verizon. that would be a really stupid move. If anything, I would go with sprint because having a decent phone matters to me. i wouldn't want the low end devices t-mobile and at&t get.
AT&T's first Android phone: Backflip. *raspberry* (locked down from jump st. with motoblur)
Verizon's first Android Phone: The Droid. Awesome! (unlocked with vanilla android)
