Yep, have to root. Just dont put it on your home screen, its easy to ignore.

How so? I've had Launcher Pro for awhile and didnt know about that. Does it keep them from running in the background as well?

Go to menu - preferences from your home screen. then go to general settings then hidden apps. As far as I know it only hides them. It dose not prevent them running in the background.

You don't need to worry about those apps "running in the background"--they're not, even if Task Killers show that they are. (You shouldn't be using those to begin with anyway--Google gutted their functionality in Android 2.2, which the Droid 2 runs, because they cause battery and stability problems, not fix them.)

Here's what an Android developer says about those "running" tasks:
