Root SBF-ing my X. how to prevent this in the future?

ok my friend has a droid x and he has been running birdman's FlyX for a couple weeks now. We struggled for a bit figuring it all out but we got the bootstrap thing going, clockworkmod going, rom manger blah blah installed the 2.2 leak, installed birdman and it's been good. until tonight.

He was trying to set up google voice, something happened and he couldn't get rid of an old voicemail from his verizon voicemail account. so he figured he would just restore one of his previous backups. so he did, and it did the normal stuff but it got stuck on the motorola M logo forever. did a battery pull and now the phone boots into STOCK recovery. clockworkmod is gone. and we can't get past the M logo.

so, I was wondering if someone could just lay out the steps nice and noobish like for me (I have a Dinc and it's so much simpler it seems with my phone) for getting clockworkmod and the bootstrap and all jazz set up so we can make sure we do it right. we struggled the first time and I'm not sure we did everything correctly. Assuming we get the SBF to work and we re-root the phone, we'll be starting at that point, rooted 2.1 droid X.

Thanks for you help!

What back up did he try to restore? If he was at 2.2, just remember you cant restore a 2.1 back up. Its a different kernal.

that would have been super helpful last night. the instructions I found said nothing about the ini file (nor was there an ini file in the install package, anyways) we also didn't know how to boot into bootloader. His phone was doing some weird battery things too. luckily we were at work so we had a DC source handy to power the phone up without the battery. took us 4 hours of mostly googling and trying and failing. but we got it.

I'm looking more for instructions on how to root/flash clockworkmod recovery/bootstrap. I just want to make sure we do it exactly right (if he's brave enough to root his phone again, he got pretty freaked out last night)

thanks guys!

You don't have to move the SU if you originally use the universalandroot method while you were on 2.1. Moving it to the xbin (which universalandroot does) makes it so you do not lose root when upgrading.

hmm thats odd.. i used universalandroot the last time i sbf'ed my phone which was couple days ago and i swear i didn't see a su file in my xbin folder when i checked, so i went to bin and moved su to xbin.

well now that youve done it once and know how to do it (or if you have questions refer to that linked thread) youll be fine. I was nervous as hell the first time I flashed mine but since then I've done it a few times and its so simple

yah the SBF part is easy now that we know what we're doing. It's the clockworkmod/bootstrap thing that confuses me a bit. with my Dinc it's so easy to get things set up but I don't fully understand the bootstrap thing with the X yet.
