Root OK - my Eris is rooted. NOW WHAT???

My Eris is the right size and is the smartest phone that works on PagePlus, which costs very little for the services I need. But it has been a little buggy, control is laggy, and some functions (wireless tethering) were missing. I was about to struggle through the processes shown in this forum, but someone in the neighborhood offered to do it.

I now have in my hand a rooted Eris with Froyo and wireless hot spot. No overclocking (yet). All my contact, schedule, memos, etc. have been saved.

Before I do anything other than get the phone number working, I'll appreciate advice.

What should I do - and what should I NOT do - to optimize this phone? What root-specific apps/utilities are important?

USAGE: phone, 5 texts/day, ebook reader, calendar, memos, nav, web, email, occasional levitation (no music, videos, or games)

Thanks, gurus!

What apps do you currently have on there and which Froyo ROM are you running?

To start with:

Root Explorer is a good one
Titanium Backup is another
SetCPU if you wish to overclock, although some ROMs are already overclocked.
CacheMate or Quick App Clean Cache are also usefull.

BTW, I am going to move this over to the Eris Root forum for more responses.

When I rooted, I really only wanted 3 things: 1-Wireless tether, which you've gotten working; 2-overclocking, which, depending on your ROM, is enabled by default on some of them. KaosFroyo is OC'd to 710 MHZ I think; and 3-Apps2SD, which Froyo can do by default without any special apps or sd card partitioning (I'm an app junkie). You just have to specify in the settings where you want apps installed.

Other than those, you'll see improved performance in your phone, especially on the web and usage as a phone.

You gotta teach me how to levitate it!

It's KaosFroyo v34, which sounds like a frozen yogurt store with lots of flavors - hopefully a good choice, and I think it changes clock. I just purchased Root Explorer, already own MyBackupPro (used only for my data), and am pleased with current speed.

The machine is now FAST - lag and ambiguity are gone. Stability is definitely improved. Wireless tethering works perfectly. I'll cautiously re-install apps, just in case something I used before was flaky.

Further advice is very welcome!

Just as an FYI, Kaos Froyo is overclocked by default. So unless you did something to not overclock it, it's overclocked.

I think that OfTheDamned answered the rest very well! If you are the type who likes to save text messages for reference, there are a couple of apps worth mentioning, both in the market.

SMS Backup+ will make a copy of your text messages to a gmail label of your choice as you receive them. It can restore them as well, but is kind of funky about it, so SMS Backup & Restore is another good one to have - it can schedule backups and restore your messages if you ever wipe the data off your phone (by switching to another ROM, or sometime a Kaos Froyo update will require a complete data wipe.)

I've recently rooted but haven't changed ROMs, so I'm still running the OTA 2.1 but with root access. I too would like to do the 3 things you mentioned. Any way to do them without switching ROMs? I especially would like to use my phone as a wifi hotspot so I can stream Netflix on my iTouch at work!

vtgrad03,

Take a peek in this thread http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/177100-fantabulous.html where this is also being discussed (in the interest of cross-thread-discombobulation-minimalization :D).

Cheers!

OfTheDamned (are you a Richard Christi fan?...anyway)

OfTheDamned and eu1 mentioned the 2 most important things you can do, Nand backup and TiBackup for your apps. Nand can get you out of any troubles in the future and Ti will help with future ROM upgrades so you do not have to download/remember all your apps.

this forum and the xda forums have been a super help to me (as I am sure most others) but I would like to throw a word of caution out there. I have been rooted for about 2 months now and it seems that it is all I can think about, what else can I do with my phone, what ROM's are available, what apps, tweaks, kernels...you guys have made me into a ...well...Hi, My name is Mike and I am a ROOT-aholic!! There I said it.

Thanks, enjoy

Since this is the first time I have ever heard the name and actually had to use Google to figure out who he was, I would say no. ;) I'll assume you are referring to my screen name, but that came from Anne Rice.

When you are unwilling to upgrade to a new phone until it has already been rooted, then you will be a true rootaholic. :D

Good to see you're not challenging your battery life horrendously with media (music, videos or games). ;)

You'll probably have the most fun configuring your screens and ringtones, etc. The Market app is a great place to start searching for tools, utilities and wallpapers, etc.

I found My Backup Pro to be more to my liking than Titanium, your mileage may vary (it is only free for 30 days and then it's five bux).

Good luck. Post about what you're doing (and which ROM you're currently flashing, you will flash more ROMs :D). Have fun.

Wireless tether and Apps2SD are available in the Market.

Only thing I would caution you about is that the developer of SetCPU (overclocking app) has requested that people purchase the app from the market. I think it's $1.99. It is free on xda-developers, but he is requesting payment.

It also may be unsupported on the particular ROM you are running.

Interesting you mentioned the Netflix app. My iPod Touch was running 3.1.2 and jailbroken with Blackra1n and would not install the Netflix app. I had to upgrade to 4.0 and re-jailbreak with Redsn0w since Blackra1n didn't go that high.

Meanwhile, my wife was running the Netflix app on her un-jailbroken iPod Touch running 3.1.3. She was so smug when she saw what I had to go through...

But that's a different story.

WOW! A waterfall of great information. THANKS...

This Eris is faster and more robust, and should last for quite a while.

I already had MyBackupPro but also installed Titanium, and will compare. No need for SetCPU, but I installed Root Explorer (though I don't yet know what to do with it). The desktop is set up properly now, with apps in folders and my most-called contacts with photos. ADW permits a 5x5 grid, which works well.

Without doubt rooting has extended the utility and life of this phone.

Again, THANKS!

Wireless tether and Apps2SD are available in the Market.

Just flashed xtrSense, which says it supports wireless tether, so I'm assuming that just means I can use the market app "Wireless Tether for Root Users" because I didn't see a way of doing it without that app. Is that right? App needed?

I just downloaded it but won't be able to try it until later tonight.

I installed Root Explorer (though I don't yet know what to do with it).

Give Root Explorer su permissions when it asks for that, then use it to rid the app drawer of stock apps or any apps you do not need cluttering up the place:

Root Explorer > system > app > mount r/w (that's the little button on the top right) > long press the app you don't want > delete > confirm.

Be very careful in there; some apps deleted will cause FCs here and there and elicit various error messages. I had a habit with my ROMs of getting rid of YouTube, Facebook, QuickOffice, all of the TTS related files, etc.

Root Explorer is also great for retrieving or removing things off of your sd card. Just go to sd card and there it will all be; I used it to get rid of unused zip files, old nand backups, etc.

That worked. Just uncluttering was satisfying -- thanks!

You're welcome, notaguru. It's good to see success with these things. :)

I just want to say again, don't go crazy in there.. some of those items appear quite benign as far as their names go, but removing the wrong ones inadvertently can ruin your day. ;)

There are a few "safe apps and files to delete" lists around, at XDA and elsewhere, but they are of the "ymmv" ilk.. beware. ;)
