Root Stock 2.2 vs Cyanogen Etc.

All - I have had my MOTO Droid for almost a year now and I love it! I love it even more since 2.2 dropped. I am currently looking into possibly rooting my phone but I am not sure of a couple of things:

Some of the threads I have read talk about the features of ROMS like CyanogenMod vs the features of stock. The threads that I have read have been very vague and talk about the features as being their, but without any real detail. Can anyone outline some of the differences between Moto's stock 2.2 and Cyanogen6?

Also, I hear a lot of talk about how much faster the alternative mods are. I have been curious to know if that is because of over-clocking or if the alternative ROMs are really just faster (less bloat?).

BaseBand changes...What are they? From what I have read they sound like change the way the phone talks to the cell towers. Sounds like it could be worth moding, but one of the things I have read is that they up the broadcast strength from the phone. If this is a case is there any impact on battery performance with the BaseBand updates?

The last question I have is which Alt. ROM should I use. Cyanogen seems to be the most popular but I also have heard a lot of people talk about Bugless Beast

I don't use CyanogenMod so can't really touch that one. I'm running UD 8 and its amazingly fast.
In part due to OC'ing (stock is 800MHz when you load this ROM, thats where I have it) and in part because the ROM doesn't have the bloat and its just wrote better. Funny to hear that but yes, these Devs are putting out better ROMS than Moto and VZW and Google. I was running Bugless Beast up until UD 8. UD 8 is hands down faster and the options, there are just so many. Do I want it to say the percentage inside the battery or not, if so what color. What color do I want the txt to be on the notification bar, when I open an app how fast do I want the transitions to be, what color do you want your LED to flash when you get a new email, do you want to uninstall Amazon MP3, what size font do you want. These are the small but very important type of changes/options that they give you to help make your phone... yours.
BaseBands - yup, you understand exactly what its doing. I've not seen any negative hit on the battery after upgrading.

The new cm is the fastest most stable froyo I have run, with stock kernel, but its been getting hot with every non stock rom. Ill try UD and see how that works!

Sorry guys for all the newb questions, but just making sure, your phone is not getting physically hot with the custom rom is it?

Yes, overclocking naturally increases the amount of heat the phone produces. It shouldn't be a problem though, unless your phone is defective, you'll be at such a high frequency that you'll be unstable WAY before you fry your phone, no matter how high of a voltage your kernel is using.

I personally have tried most ROM s, (probably like most of us here) and have settled on Shadow. It's CM6 based, and has cyanogenmod plus some extra functions.tweaks. I run Navigator almost all day so of course have a overheating issue. Shadow is the only ROM I've used that the stock kernel is fast enough to avoid over clocking and it's just solid. Also, one of the best themes I have seen is made for Shadow, the Executive Theme. Of course, like most will tell you, every phone reacts differently to being rooted, and some ROM s may not work for you. Get friendly with Nandroid and have fun!

I have read a number of places that everyone phone reacts different to being rooted. Does this mean every DROID 1 reacts different or that a droid reacts didifferent than a incredible for example. If it is that each DROID reacts didifferent can anyone explain why the same hardware and sosoftware configuration would "react" different.

The only believable "every phone reacts differently" thing is that not all Droid 1s will be able to overclock to the same extent while remaining stable. This is because processors are created and then classified by a process called binning: Product binning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
