Root Help with Plan of Attack for root to Froyo 2.3.13

Hi all!

Just got my DX yesterday and have been reading up on the various droid forums and stumbled across this little gem of information and people. I think I've developed a plan of attack for rooting it to eventually end up on Froyo 2.3.13.

1. Root the phone using universalandroot
---Should I make a backup of my 2.1 using TiBu or ROM Manager, or does it not really matter considering I'd need to be on 2.1 to restore?
2. Update to Froyo 2.2 using this thread Is it safe to assume that I'll have adb after using "universalandroot"???
3. Update to Froyo 2.3.13 using this thread
4. Load one of the marvelous looking themes (I hadn't seen any issues, but anyone on 2.3 yet having issues with themes for 2.2?)

Also, I heard/read that the Swype keyboard changes when switching from 2.1 to 2.2. Is there any way to keep the 2.1 black fat key look or is it inevitable to switch to the, from what I've read, smaller white keyboard? Clarification on that rumor would be fantastic.

I have experience flashing my old i910 (Original Sammy Omnia), and am terribly excited to get on the droid bandwagon now, just want to make sure that my plan seems feasible and that if there's anything else I should know, I'd greatly appreciate advice now.

Is my list too simplistic, because it seems after reading everything, that I may be oversimplifying things, but figured I'd check with some of you experts before I go bork my phone on my own. :p

Cheers!

1.root
2.droid x bootstrap
3.rom manager
4. 2.2 from rom manger
5. New froyo

Word. That sounds like a plan.

1. universalandroot - 1-click seems too easy :D
2. koush bootstrap
3. rom manager
4. 2.2 from rom manager
5. New froyo (from the thread? Or is it also available in ROM Manager? Probably not yet is what I'm thinking)

On #4, I shouldn't need to update my bootstrapper since I'll have the latest version, right?

no its not in rom manager, the new froyo that is
and make sure after you flash the old froyo from rom manager, you re-press bootstrap recovery and flash clockwork

I saw another post regarding this and just want to understand it better:
All done after putting old froyo on (2.2)
--Download new froyo update.zip, place in clockwork folder
--Reboot into bootstrap recovery
--Reboot recovery
--Choose file to flash from clockwork

Is that right or did I misinterpret "flash clockwork"?

No I was saying to reopen droid x bootstrap and press bootstrap recovery again, and also open up rom manager and press flash clockwork again at the top

I agree 100%, but I also suggest doing an advanced recovery of 2.3.13 not a full recovery. I lost root when I did a full recovery and it was kinda a pain to do the Droid 2 root. Save yourself the trouble and do a system only recovery.

YES!!!! I would recommend going the nandroid route rather than the update.zip

Also @MrJ you don't need to put the update.zip in the clockwork folder, just on your sdcard
But if you do the nandroid route you need to put it in the /clockworkmod/backup folder, and just do an advanced restore

Ahh, okay I see the nandroid link at the bottom of the quote in the OP new Froyo thread. That seems easy enough. Getting out of work soon, so when I get home I'll be putting the DX through its paces (and steps) so hopefully my next post will not be a "OMG I bricked my phone :(", rather I'm hoping for "OMG I <3 my phone! :D"

All I know is that if I screw it up, I wouldn't be the first (nor the last) and if I can't figure out how to sbf it back to normalcy I at least have you all to help me try try again.

DO I need to extract the zip for the nandroid method so it looks like my other backups that Rom Manager created?
What are the steps to do an advanced restore? I assume this is using the Rom Manager rather than rebooting from the bootstrap application?

ok...the bootstrap application installs clockworkmod recovery. Rom manager is the GUI for clockwork. Normally an extra app like the bootstrap is not needed, and the flash clockwork at the top of rom manger install clockwork by itself. I think you can just download the whole file and out it on your sdcard in the /clockworkmod/backup folder because I don't think dark matter messed with the folder. I think he just took it off his sdcard and uploaded it. To restore only system, go into rom manager and press reboot recovery. Go to backup and restore, advanced restore, choose system only

When you say to out it on the SD card, does that mean to unzip the nandrod zip? The nandroid file is in zip format. When nandroid makes the backups it does not create a zip but rather folder with an md5 file and 4 img files.

However when Rom Manager downloaded and installed 2.2 for me I don't know what it did cause it worked like magic. :) so My questions may be dumb but I don't knwo the process. With this kind of stuff, sometimes it helps to understand the older more painful method to understand why the new way is better, and how it works.

yeah the files need to go into a folder on the sdcard in the clockwork/backup folder, name it whatever you want

I know this method works, wonder what the problem could be

Not sure but I did try it twice.

My Method was 2.1 -> Root - using universalandroot
Root -> 2.2 Using Rom Manager's Downloaded Verizon 2.2 Stock image -> 2.2 with root access

Then I downloaded the nandroid backup of 2.2 with System 2.3.13
Opened Bootstrap application and booted into recovery. Restarted.
Opened the Rom Manager, flashed the clockwork, rebooted into recovery,
Then after selecting in the advanced recovery to install system only, I get the checking MD5 sums mismatch error.

I will download it again maybe something screwy happened from that file sharing site.

I guess you could try not doing an advanced restore

I dunno if it is worth it if I lose root and have to restore root the droid-2 way.

edit: Re-downloaded and unzipped the file, same process. Seems to be working this time, currently restoring the system. Not sure what the issue was, the file size was the same, so maybe windows just sucks at unzipping (using built in xp tool the first time) second time I used 7 zip. Well whatever re-starting now :)

I did this exact method, but renamed the file a little bit to differentiate it from my others so I could see it easier. It worked perfect for me - you may want to try renaming the file if redownloading it does not work. Also, what link did you get the nandroid from?

I got it from the megaupload site linked in the more official 2.3.13 post.

Well the MD5 sum did it's job so I say this problem was actually a good thing.

Okay. Now I feel like a dunce.

I've used ROM Manager,
found and downloaded the 2.2 ROM,
hit the green buttons and hit install

It finished doing its thing (or so I think) then has ClockworkMod Recovery on my screen with my options. I went to "backup and restore" and backed up the system, but am unsure if I just "reboot system now" or one of the many other options including "apply sdcard:update.zip" and "install zip from sdcard"

So, do I reboot, apply update, install zip, or go down to recory and do something in there, or wipe data/factory reset?

I just followed these directions here ->
http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/174152-brand-new-froyo-2-3-13-a-8.html#post1589531

If I remember it did everything else for me, I think it may have prompted me to reboot and then it installed. When you say you found the 2.2 Rom, you downloaded it from within the ROM manager? Rom Manager -> DOwnload Roms -> Stock Images -> 2.Verizon Droid x2.2?

There are certainly more ways to do this but this was teh easiest way, and I retained root all the through 2.3.13 :) Now I just gotta get me some Tranquility or FlyX

Well I'm not on the 2.3.13 yet, I did what I needed to do before the phone took care of installing and then when it was done, after I click installed, it took me to the clockworkmod recovery screen, so I'm confused as to what to do next.

Am I supposed to follow something like the following directions for 2.3.13 but when taking care of installing 2.2 as well?

1) Restart phone via Koush bootstrap into Recovery Mode
2) Select Mounts and Storage
3) Select Format System (ONLY DO THIS IF IT FAILS TO INSTALL THE FIRST TIME)
4) Select Mount System
5) Back out by pressing Power button
6) Select Install zip from sdcard
7) Select choose zip from sdcard
8) find and select this zip file
9) First Boot may take up to 5 minutes
