Root I have been rooted less than 24 hours

If you haven't already... get ROM Manager and download a rom that looks good (make sure it will work with your system). On top of that, I went ahead and got Wifi Tether, downloaded a theme to customize my phone a bit, and picked up SetCPU to kick things up a bit.

You are the second person to suggest SetCPU. The other to help with battery life. I'll give it a whirl! thanks!

not exactly in order...

1. get an OC kernel and SetCPU and OC your phone. SetCPU alone is not as valuable without an OC kernel
2. get MyBackup Pro or Titanium so you can do backups of apps + data at the root level
3. be sure to make a backup ROM - via ROM Manager - with clockworkmod ASAP before everything else
4. start to investigate root only apps like: Root Explorer, adfree, TempMonitor, Wireless tether, drocap2,
5. maybe try some themes

before you do anything ROM manager and Titanium Backup... use TB to back up all your apps, dialer storage and txts, etc, and use ROM manager to backup your entire phone.

After you've backed up your stuff then start playing with overclock kernels, different ROMS (cyanogen, bugless beast, liquid frozen yogurt, etc) and themes.

I strongly recommend you not downloading anything until you have backed your phone up. Once you've got it backed up if something goes wrong you dont lose what you already have. ;)

Must have Apps:

ROM Manager
Titanium Backup
TempMonitor
SetCPU
Wireless Tether

I hear ya! I've only been rooted since Sunday and I'm like 'what next'. I put beautiful widget on my phone and it is too cool. I guess I'm a big kid. It has live weather animation for your phone. It's raining where I am. Thunder & lightning and it's showing up on my phone. You should try it. Also look for live wall papers. I'm just starting out and taking things slow. I unfortunately hit a snag when I installed dream catcher 5.0 on my phone. It caused my phone to lag big time. It interfered with my LauncherPro and caused my screen to go blank. Not saying that you will but if you run into anything like that you can always go back to what you had before by removing a trouble causing app from your memory card.

Well, it's like why would you even do the root thing if you didn't have some idea of what and why you want to do it?

Do you have to have a reason? Everybody is learning how to have more control of their phone. No reason why that person should have to explain why they rooted their phone if they don't know what to do and why.

Well, yeah, you might try removing a finger or ear or maybe sewing a couple more on to have more control and grasping ability or hearing ability... no real reason needed and no warranty voided. No explanation needed. ;)

I would imagine he would root for the same reason a lot of people did. Options. I personally had specific reasons in mind, but I'm sure some people just don't want to drive their bright, shiny, new Ferrari in 1st gear. So they root to expand possibilities.
And before it starts a war, I personally think that anyone rooting should have a firm understanding of exactly what they are doing to their device to save others the redundancy of answering questions, but more than that, so they don't mess up something that's pretty great right out of the box.
I understand where a lot of the frustration comes from, but trying to make someone feel bad for asking a question, any question, is not what this forum is all about.

List of firsts:
ROM Manager (support the dev)
Titanium ( gotta be protected)
WiFi Tether (Great for showing off)
Custom ROM (Goes with ROM Manager, but you'll try a dozen before settling on one!)
SetCPU is great, fortunately I have found a ROM that, for my phone, makes it unnecessary, but every phone is different.

Have fun, and don't forget to Nandroid!

Thanks Anderson. I guess we have somebody who likes to start trouble and I'm not for it.

Oh I understand the reasons for rooting. I've been in this business for a while, but my comment was directed (as is yours) towards anyone having an understand of what it is they are doing and why, not just doing it cause it's the "cool thing to do." Particularly when it is possible to get into trouble by not knowing a bit about what you are doing at the root level.

Didn't mean to seem like I was calling anyone out. And ultimately we all agree on the reasoning, but I figure ultimately it is their phone. We've all said, "it's already been answered, here is the link", and I'm sure we all will again.

We were all anxious, no matter how many people told us to take our time. (Whether we took the time needed or not is irrelevant!) Heck, I still get anxious...every time a new ROM drops.

This really is too much fun.

What kind of trouble are you talking about? It's kind of hard to brick these phones unless you know what you are doing :p. You can bumble around and as long as you have RSD Lite or sbf_flash you are okay. Do a search - these boards are full of people who thought they "bricked" their phone and after these wonderful people helped them they were happy campers.

These devices were designed to be tinkered with. Don't be afraid, just experiment. There are a lot of great people who will help you and in some cases, hold your hand, throughout any process you have questions about. Oh, and if you are worried about a warranty, then just re-flash the stock ROM and lurk on these boards ;).

There's so many people on each section of these forums telling people how amazing it is to root. Part of the function of these forums is to get help from other users on the possibilities of their phones. Many are here to help. That's what he's looking for. I'm sure he knows the reason he decided to root, you don't need to know his reason. As long as he's rooted, why not see what else a rooted phone can do? Either offer some help/suggestions or don't post, please.

:D How silly.

Something useful like this post.

:D

You know know nothing of the sort, which is why I brought it up. I don't think he knows either - just that it's something "cool" to do.

Clearly if he knew then he wouldn't be asking -- that's my point. And that too is the purpose of "these" forums.

I'll refer you to your own advice in your last sentence above.

Well, again, I did know the initial reason why I rooted. I was soliciting additional things/suggestions that I have, perhaps, not considered. Sorry if that insulted your vast level of expertise. For example, if I went to New York City to visit the Empire State Building and prior to going went to a travel site to see if there were other points of interests, would you suggest I shouldn't go to New York? Anyway, you can chose to ignore my questions if they are simply too simple for you to earnestly respond.
