Does the Epic have the $10 premium fee like the Evo?

Hi, I'm a Sprint employee and Epic owner/user.

Yes, the $10 premium data charge applies to the HTC EVO 4G as well as the Epic 4G. The premium fee is not related to 4G connectivity. It's necessary for all our premium devices that use a lot of data with all the social integration, multiple email and calendar needs plus apps. Even with the premium data charge Sprint is still the best value in wireless with their unlimited mobile-to-mobile and nights-weekends talk, text, picture mail and web.

Sprint is proud to have you as customers. Thanks for your business.

Not for 4G? so the fact that the epic's 3G is worse than any 3G phone you currently sell is what we pay the $10 more for? Wow!

Aren't you the guy who posted there are "no know GPS" or data speed issues or any known issues on Epic when Sprint device team is tracking seven, (two major ones)? LOL!

I wasn't looking for a commercial.

So you're saying that any phone that allows "social integration, multiple email and calendar needs plus apps" will have the premium fee? Then why do only the two 4G phones have it? Are you suggesting that no other Sprint phones can manage enough data use?

Sprint really needs to hire some new marketing people. :D

@JohnJSal - Not offering you a commercial. I have to disclose that I'm a Sprint employee by law.

@Khemul - I'm not with Marketing, I'm just a regular employee and Sprint user. My intention is to help customers with issues or problems. We are watching the forums to because we value feedback and make note of needs and concerns.

The Epic 4G's 3G performance hits some of the highest benchmarks compared to most other cellphones on the market so not sure why you think differently. Check the media, 3rd party test sites and dozens of publicly available reviews. PC World and Yahoo Finance have both ranked the Epic 4G as the best cellphone on the market today, over and above the iPhone 4 and other Android phones offered by VZW, AT&T and T-Mobile.

The $10 fee is NOT associated with 4G data usage. However, even with the $10 premium data fee Sprint is STILL a MUCH BETTER VALUE than VZW, AT&T and T-Mobile when you compare same features/options to same features/options. There is no better value.

Not saying you can't get a cheaper monthly plan if you're willing to cut out options from other plans. This isn't my opinion, it's just a fact. Like the data speed tests, there are numerous blogs, sites and reviews of the major US carrier plans compared with one another and Sprint continues to come out on top in terms of total value and cost of ownership.

Not offering a commercial, yet both posts look like they are copy/pasted from a PR release. ;)

Sprint can claim all they want that the fee has nothing to do with 4G data usage, but the fact remains that the phones the fee applies to are 4G phones. Seems sort of silly that they keep pushing this idea, especially when people are perfectly willing to accept it as a "4G usage fee".

Silly of me to think you were trying to promote Sprint:

Those two bold statements combined mean you are representing Sprint (how else do you know Sprint is "proud" to have me?) and as a representative you are making a claim about your product.

it isn't connected to 4G as far as the fact goes that it costs you an extra $10 when you don't even have access to 4G. I get a 15% discount, plus the any mobile & unlimited data are pretty good, and that is the only reason I put up with this crap.

edit to add: If I'm already getting unlimited data for $69.99, then how do you use data usage as an excuse to charge more? You can't use more than 'unlimited'.

From what I was told from Sprint, the $10 Premium Data charge is because: "We've enhanced your experience with this device. This device can do more and then some. Features include full HTML web with Adobe Flash and a wicked-fast processor."

Holly s@#$, you are so terribly misinformed. Check here: Samsung Epic:3G Upload Capped?

After reading the posts, pay special attention to post 108 (by a Sprint employee about Sprint employees like you.)

Sorry, I didn't mean to jump on you, but your post hit a nerve.

so when I was running a full browser before without a $10 surcharge?

what flash?

the processor... wasn't that included in the price of the phone itself? Am I renting the cpu now?

Go to Sprint's website, then go to your account, then go to "Analyze My Plan". From there go to where it breaks down your bill and click on the Premium Data link and it should show a pop-up that explains the rationale for the charge. That's what it told me.

Ok, here's a copy paste of the text. My question is the same - I already bought the phone, why am I being charged $10/month for the processor, screen, and camera? Why would I be charged $10/month extra when my data, GPS, and messaging are already unlimited? I don't get 4G speed, I don't get 'better' data or messages, I don't get more services, yet I pay more? Then they give us a pop up saying we pay more for hardware we already purchased outright? Like I said, it's still cheaper, I just really hate the half-*ssed justifications they try to use.

Premium Data

This phone can do it all and then some. Because we’ve boosted your data experience with this phone’s amazing services and features, you’ll need this add-on. Enjoy:

  • A wicked fast processor to make your apps run smoother and faster on our Sprint 3G and 4G network
  • Top quality media experience with oversized screen, high resolution video and HD recording
  • High-quality pics to snap and share with friends and family
