Because the plan costs $69.99 per month. Only the two 4G phones charge the $10 premium data fee. If you have any other device, the plan will be $69.99 per month.

Not for 4G? so the fact that the epic's 3G is worse than any 3G phone you currently sell is what we pay the $10 more for? Wow!

Aren't you the guy who posted there are "no know GPS" or data speed issues or any known issues on Epic when Sprint device team is tracking seven, (two major ones)? LOL!

The Epic 4G's 3G performance hits some of the highest benchmarks compared to most other cellphones on the market so not sure why you think differently. Check the media, 3rd party test sites and dozens of publicly available reviews. PC World and Yahoo Finance have both ranked the Epic 4G as the best cellphone on the market today, over and above the iPhone 4 and other Android phones offered by VZW, AT&T and T-Mobile.

The $10 fee is NOT associated with 4G data usage. However, even with the $10 premium data fee Sprint is STILL a MUCH BETTER VALUE than VZW, AT&T and T-Mobile when you compare same features/options to same features/options. There is no better value.

Not saying you can't get a cheaper monthly plan if you're willing to cut out options from other plans. This isn't my opinion, it's just a fact. Like the data speed tests, there are numerous blogs, sites and reviews of the major US carrier plans compared with one another and Sprint continues to come out on top in terms of total value and cost of ownership.

Sprint can claim all they want that the fee has nothing to do with 4G data usage, but the fact remains that the phones the fee applies to are 4G phones. Seems sort of silly that they keep pushing this idea, especially when people are perfectly willing to accept it as a "4G usage fee".

it isn't connected to 4G as far as the fact goes that it costs you an extra $10 when you don't even have access to 4G. I get a 15% discount, plus the any mobile & unlimited data are pretty good, and that is the only reason I put up with this crap.

edit to add: If I'm already getting unlimited data for $69.99, then how do you use data usage as an excuse to charge more? You can't use more than 'unlimited'.

From what I was told from Sprint, the $10 Premium Data charge is because: "We've enhanced your experience with this device. This device can do more and then some. Features include full HTML web with Adobe Flash and a wicked-fast processor."

Go to Sprint's website, then go to your account, then go to "Analyze My Plan". From there go to where it breaks down your bill and click on the Premium Data link and it should show a pop-up that explains the rationale for the charge. That's what it told me.
