lock screen is driving me nuts, there has to be a better way!

This seems like such a simple request...

I don't want to have to slide to unlock... EVER.

I want to simply press the power button, and start using the phone, ideally with whatever app I left open still there.

I tired "nolock" and "mylock" and neither of them seem to do anything at all.

Any other suggestions on how I can use my phone without having to constantly slide that useless thing across? when the screen is off there's no way I can accidentally activate anything anyway, so what's the point of the silly slider????

I'm running a rooted android 2.1 on a TELUS Motorola Milestone

I've never tried either of the apps you mentioned. The only app I have ever used to disable "keyguard" is Tasker, and I've never had any trouble with that feature. At US$5 (approx.) it's a pricey way to change your keyguard setting, but it works for me. I usually have it disable keyguard when I'm in the camera app, and then turn it back on when I exit.

in the "locations & Security" menu there is no checkbox to uncheck.
There is only a "phone lock settings" sub-menu, in there I have the choice of lock type (none, password, or pattern), it I choose "none" it gives me the slider, which I don't want. if I choose one of the other methods it allows me to choose a timeout (1-30 mins) and during that time the phone behaves EXACTLY like I want it to... of course when the time expires I have to enter either a pattern or password, neither of which I want to do.

I'm considering tasker.... if it actually does what you say, I know it has other neat features too which I may well end up using at some point.

well, I tried no-lock again, it appears to work almost exactly 50% of the time... (every second time, and predictably so)

I also tried tasker, and it doesn't work at all...

I'm wondering if my phone is messed up somehow? or if all of these apps really do about nothing...

I use "Shake2Mute" so I don't have to unlock to answer my phone when it rings...it has a setting where I just shake my phone to answer on the paid "donate" version. I like it...especially in bright sun where I can't see the screen easily.

I use an alternative lockscreen called "GOTO" which is still sliding to unlock but it slides differently and directly to a number of applications. It also has some advanced settings that seemed like it might allow you to sidestep the slidelock altogether. If you are not aware all Market Apps can be tried for 24 hours and then uninstalled for a full refund (at least in the USA).

I hope one of these works for you.

menu > settings > location & security > uncheck "Screen lock"

It's built it. At least it is on my X.

Yep, this is a feature of the X and not the Droid 1 or Droid 2 or very many other Android phones for that matter. I wish someone would port this over because I would LOVE to go into settings and disable it. I hate it. Always have.

Ah, okay. I didn't realize it was specific to the X. I've never thought about it :)

Unfortunately it is an X only thing (unless the newer phones coming out have it... which they should) and I'm tempted to buy an X for this feature alone. Having the ability to go into the menu settings and disable the screen lock feature is SO much better than some 3rd party app that works sometimes and doesn't others and even when it works there's lag and you have to see the lock screen... all that and they want you to pay for it on top of all this? Forget you. Figure out a way to make it like the X and then you can have my money. Until then I will just make due until I finally decide the features of the X are worth the cost difference to me.

Has anyone else noticed that the "no lock" app keeps your device awake? If you enable "no lock" and check your uptime vs awake time youll notice that they are practically identical.

It shouldn't do. I've been using no lock for ages and never had that. I've just checked and my up time is 60 hours and my awake time only 22 hours.

Did they rid of this on Froyo? I go to Location & Security and there is no check or uncheck screen lock.
"Set up screen lock" > None > Pattern > PIN > Password
"Security lock timer"

The none lets you not need a password/pin/pattern but I still have to slide to unlock. ?.

I've been using ScreenModeWidget - Android app on AppBrain for a long time and have really not had any issues with it. It just works. It is a widget though so it has to be on a home screen, but that's fine with me. It does what you are looking for.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't work. the first time I tried it it worked fine, the next time the screen turned off I had to slide to unlock again. since then it works maybe 1 time in 5 (no lock worked 1 in 2) neither is anywhere near acceptable.

If you don't lock the screen don't you run into issues where buttons get pressed while the phone is in your pocket?
no. The screen is still locked whenever it times out. only the power button will bring it back.
try the following: set your lock mode to "pattern" and set the lock timeout to 30 minutes (the longest it will go) but leave the screen timeout at 30 seconds.
when your screen times out in 30 seconds, everything is locked, when you touch the power button to bring it back, you don't need to do anything to unlock, no pattern, no password, no stupid, irritating, good for nothing, slide. 30 minutes of the phone working the way it should. unfortunately AFTER the 30 minutes, you have to enter a pattern to unlock.
This is the best compromise I've found yet, it means when I'm using the phone frequently, I don't have to do anything other than tap the power button to get in to use it. unfortunately when I don't use it frequently, I have to enter the pattern every time I use it.

There HAS to be a way to disable that stupid slide! I can't believe that none of these apps everyone raves about is capable of this simple function!

Battery Indicator Pro (the paid version) has a setting to disable the lock screen. I tried it on my Droid X and it worked. I soon disabled it because it's not how I want to run my phone so I don't know if there are any side effects.
Well... this isn't the option I went with, but in the end it was instrumental to solving my mystery.

I installed this app, and it worked just like all the others... that's to say it worked once, and not again, HOWEVER the difference being that battery indicator pro leaves an icon in the status bar at all times, I noticed however that when waking my phone up again, and having to use the lock, that the icon was missing. meaning that the app wasn't running any more.

A bit more investigation showed this to be the case with all apps that are supposed to work this way.

So... I did some more digging and found that another program I was using (Super Manager) has an option to "enable auto cleanup" which kills various unused processes whenever you turn off the screen. This was killing every one of these applications.

Long story short, I am back to using the free "no-lock" application, and so far, it's working perfectly.

No-lock did the trick for me....

No Lock is worthless for me because it doesn't disable the volume button when locked. A single bump of the volume button wakes the screen and I bump the volume button almost every time I put it into my pocket. What's the point? If they would disable the volume button I would give it a shot. Otherwise having a lock screen that that allows external buttons to remain unlocked (aside from the power button) is pointless and is the single biggest complaint in that app's reviews.
