Vibrant GPS fix - good news for us?

Over on XDA, they are playing with a new Vibrant release (pre-release) that many are claiming fixes GPS. This is a September build; the latest captivate build is still from August.

They are saying Google Maps and NAV work while driving with perfect reroutes and location.

Let's hope we see a similar things for the captivate soon.

Nope - many are complaining the latest Captivate ROM doe NOT fix GPS - also it is an August release not September.

Yep, I was informing not searching - no other post on this forum abou the new ROM i referenced.....

Yeah I heard it was working but people have not done enough track tests yet on the captivate. It is possible to push the vibrant gps files over to captivate. Those who have done it say they get a fast and decently accurate lock

I am personally running the JH7 and the "files" from the vibrant fix and can say it is better but NOT FIXED. I get 3-5 sat's in 5-10 seconds and a lock of 80 feet withon 30-45 seconds, however that does not stick. Yesterday while driving around, data, cell location and phone was off, only GPS. I would competly loose signal (or my gps location) every 5-10 minutes and it would take 30-45 seconds to relock). When it was locked, it was dead on, but not being constant is useless for now...

Let's clarify a bit - The Vibrant fix is reported to work on a vibrant phone running the Vibrant ROM.

No one has suggested that ripping a few files out of the Vibrant ROM would be a full fix. There are many differences between ROMs that are not understood. These "files" were just a best guess attempt at what may be the main GPS components.

Testing has revealed that there are kernel differences around GPS that have still not been accounted for.

Hopefully the next Captivate release will have the this GPS fix in a full Captivate package.

I understand that; I was not saying this is a fix for the Captivate; I was just sharing information for the others watching this. I do apologize if my post was misleading and needed claitification. Thank you for the input so others will not be confused and think it is a fix

Actually it was suggested, there is an active thread over at XDA where people are doing just this; but just like you said, there is a lot more to this puzzle that needs to be fixed before a true GPS fix is available.

For a while my GPS didnt work. I just changed my settings(not stock and still not stock) and I have quick lock on GPS!!!!

I got 10 satelites in about 10 seconds or so, 5 in use. It was about 5 meters off! Awesome!

My setup is everything stock, except...

Operation Mode- MS Based
Skyhook - ON
Server- supl.google.com
Port- 7276
SUPL Secure Socket- OFF

I am sooooo happy I can use my GPS and google maps accurately and MUCH faster!

The bottom line is it's outstanding news. I think the fix is likely driver related, plus the phone specific implementation to utilize the new driver/libs/conf specifications. Pushing the package over to the Captivate might provide some improvements to the common interfaces, but they may have exposed some new properties/etc., that "fix" the issue.

If nothing else - and assuming the hardware implementation is the same - this suggests the problem can be fixed (or the performance greatly enhanced) at the software level.

Hey Guys.. I think I'm not alone here with GPS issue, but mine seems to doesn't work most of the time. My wife has an iphone and on her phone GPS location works like a charm even inside the house.

anyone know about any tricky to make GPS work on Samsung? I called ATT today and rep. told me - Samsung is aware of the issue but has no idea about any potential fixes.

next step is to call Samsung...!!

It is a known issue and Samsung is working on it. You can turn on the wireless network option and that will help. If you google "Samsung Captivate GPS Fix" you will find other things that work for some.

We will hear about a release date on a fix when it is ready.

Samsung has promised a fix out in September. That's a couple more weeks of time for them.

Thanks for the spelling correction, and link to info on it. I actually assumed correctly what it meant, but the comments are interesting.
