1.6 vs 2.0 --What am I missing?

BACKGROUND:

-I bought the MOTO-DROID. It has Android 2.0. Great device, I love it..
-3 weeks after purchase, the Verizon store informs me that I can have a -Droid Eris for FREE.
-I picked up the ERIS today.. been playing with it for an hour or so.
-The DROID has 2.0, the ERIS has 1.6.

ISSUE:
1.6 is WAY BETTER than 2.0!!

It looks better, it's faster, better interface.. more home screens.. it's just better... Granted, I haven't been playing with it that long, but it seems much better in the brief look..

What am I missing??? I want to have 1.6 on my MOTO DROID!

I must be missing something..

I think what he was trying to say is that:

1) Yes, your MOTO DROID is running Android 2.0.

2) You're Droid Eris is made by HTC which means that it is running the HTC Sense UI on top of Android 1.6. So, all that eye candy you see (weather apps, widgets, etc) is HTC specific stuff. In this case, you might say HTC have done a better job "branding" their version. That is why people like the Sense UI. You can disable the HTC Sense by going to the Applications Manager, scrolling down to "TouchFlo" and clearing it as a default. Then you will get a choice of using the stock Adroid OS or using the HTC Sense.

The point is, at the moment you're not really comparing 2.0 to 1.6. Rather you're comparing 2.0 to HTC's flashy user interface (on 1.6).

hope that helps

The HTC Droid ERIS is actually running Google Android 1.5 not 1.6.
There are comfirmed reports that the ERIS will get an OS upgrade, but to what is unknow (1.6, 2.0, 2.1) most people are expecting it to be 2.x, but only time will tell. From what I have gathered the biggest difference between the 1.5 and upper versions is the Google Navigation (Turn by Turn w/ Voice).

As stated before HTC customized the User Interface (UI) to make 1.5 more "slick", calling it the "Sense UI". The Sense UI is what makes the OS look much better and gives it 7 home screens and some HTC only widgets.

The reason why the ERIS did not come with the 2.0, is HTC is working on making the Sense UI compatable with the newer OS.

Personally once the ERIS O/S is updatted I think it will be a much better phone than the droid in appearance and UI. However, some people are concerned about the ERIS processor underperforming with the new OS. And the battery on ERIS has a lot to be desired but all hope is that it will be fixed in one of the updates coming in the next few months.

Thanks clobber for clarifying iamkewl's post. Now I get it..

iamkewl, thanks for TRYING to inform me, I am fairly new to Android phones.

And thank you Jlopcpa for the added information.

Well, I must say, whatever the nature of the ops system, It certainly has a better feel.. Let me give an example in one simple "selection" screen.

When you select a "time" or "date" you get a selection screen on the MotoDroid in which you have to touch a 'plus' or 'minus' button, or you can type the text in the field.. it's OK.. BUT, with the ERIS, you get a COOL selection screen where you can just swipe the numbers in the direction desired.. much more user friendly and smooth!

Perhaps an update for the MotoDroid will change some of these things? I doubt it though..

Bill, Yes, I added a new line/number a few days ago, and the rep called to inform me that I could have the Eris for free to use with that new number.. So, yes, it is a two year contract on the NEW line, which is no problem.. The whole family is on Verizon and this is the 8th line in the immediate family.. We'll be with them for a while no doubt.. :)
