Help GPS issues?

in case anyone's interested, someone extracted the gps files from the samsung UNOFFICIAL firmware they leaked for the US Vibrant

GPS fix without flashing a new ROM? Check this ou... - T-Mobile Community

Looks interesting. Reading the whole thread it would seem to be again a partial fix though, which is frustrating, apparantly samsung is having a rather hard time fixing the gps. Which makes me wonder, if its just a software thing, how hard can it be? Handsets from all priceranges have included GPS since many years, and its not usually one of the buggy parts.

So still I wonder if its not a hardware problem, even moreso with all the fixes that help somewhat but it never leads to the accuracy you should be able to expect from a high-end device like this. Which makes me wonder if the data generated by the hardware is maybe just of quality too low to be able to reliably calculate a result with error correction algorithms. I hope not, but I'm not purchasing before I see results that are proper instead of 'usable, but barely'. Also the compass, how hard can it be if the hardware works properly?

i don't know enough about software coding to say this with any authority but as i posted earlier, the Tmobile USA UNOFFICIAL leaked firmware worked so well for me i'm ecstatic - over a 9 mile circuitous route, all secondary roads, speeds mainly in the 30-35 range with some in the 55 range, about 25-30 turns (this drive was expressly to test the firmware), there was only one anomaly and the more i think about it, it may well have been the MyTracks program - but when i first left the house, the track showed me exactly where i was at the end of the driveway on the left corner of my lot. When i turned onto the road, at the far side of the lot (155') it showed me exactly where i was. Then about 1/4 mile down at the corner it showed me exactly at the stop sign, literally. Then i turned - the anomaly that showed up later, the track showed me turning right about 10' before the corner as if i was clipping across my neighbor's lawn. But the rest of the track was spot on - on the 4 lane roads, it showed me in the exact lane i was in, when i turned left, it showed me having gone down the left hand turn storage lane.

when i pulled into a gas station (under a huge metal canopy) to get gas, i did a 180 degree half circle coming out from under that canopy and it located it accurately.

when i got home i forgot to turn the mytrack log off and walked out into the yard to pick up some limbs that had fallen down - the track included that foot path.

the part that i can't state with any authority - the folks that seem to have some problems still - are all or seem to be folks that have flashed the bejesus out of their phones (one actually stating that he re-flashed someone's 'gps fix" overtop the leaked firmware. i have to wonder if all the flashing they've done has left some remnants of earlier flashings on their phones - - i can't state that like moses with the tablets on the mountain, but before the flash my phone would not lock on 2-3 sats max outside, maybe 1-2 inside but the accuracy at the last test was something like 1600 feet - with this flash, it is dead on. With the flash, inside viewing 10-11 sats and locking on 3, 4 or maybe 5. Outside - viewing 12 sats and locking on 7-8 (or more).

the ironic part was i just sent my vibrant back (for some other issues) but i tested it again yesterday before packaging it and it was still dead on.

FWIW - if i re-purchase the phone, where i was cynical about sammy actuallly fixing or or being able to, i'm now a helluva lot more comfortable if it's not totally fixed, it's damn close.

I'm sat here with it now in the garden, and it's showing 10 in view / 10 in use.

I have 3 locked on dead steady at 42 SNR, a few at 35+ and a couple hovering around 19 (orange) and 20 (green). Accuracy still flicks occasionally from 16.4 feet to 32.8 feet, but it has me correctly placed, outside my shed at the end of the garden.

It certainly *feels* more reliable, and MyTracks is giving some perfect tracks (I will upload some later). It does have the occasional glitch where it has me cutting a corner through some houses but not very often.

Incidentally, I tried to flash to JM8 this morning but it wasn't playing .. will try again later.

Cheers
Dave.

Great results! What firmware did your phone ship with, and how does this compare?

No Dave, it's not...... and the GPS Fix part hasn't seen any light of day regardless of what users are using at the moment.

Thank goodness for that :)

JPH has felt really nice this afternoon but just a couple of niggles made me doubt that it was the finished article.

Definitely looking forward to the next week or two though! Compared to earlier 2.2 leaks, this one is by far the nicest to use.:)

Played a bit more with JPH this morning, and I must say that the GPS was much better today. I did my "Cardio Workout" (the school walk!) and it was a pretty accurate track. Ten sats in view, ten locked on at green. all 25+ SNR. :)

Having said that, I'm gettin far too many FC's in previously very stable apps and lots of 5 or 10 second black screens when I start an app.

I will stop chasing rainbows and wait for the official release, hopefully next week :)

Has there been any confirmation yet that there WILL be an official GPS fix? Or still just the vague 'GPS optimizations'?

*eyes at HTC's newly announced models featuring offline satnav software*
Yes, it's definitely coming.... that I can assure you.
There has been some teething trouble's but Samsung appear on track to 'finally' deliver as promised.
As such it will be a combined Froyo & GPS Fix.

Just a heads up, it appears Vodafone (UK) have rolled out an update to their branded firmware to JM4 (if I recall) via Kies, and as you'd expect its littered in useless Vodafone junk that can't be removed.

Its NOT 2.2, so if you don't need it, don't update it (unless you already have the vodafone apps installed)!

They played the same trick to the HTC Desire users when they were waiting for 2.2 and we all know how that ended, so hopefully the same will happen with the SGS update.

One day they might learn....

Officially ~ Stay tuned to Keis from 12:00 Amsterdam time (that’s 6 a.m. EDT/ 3 a.m. PDT).

However Unofficially....... I'm still a little skeptic.
My other 'info' informs me the following:-
"The Galaxy Android update is delayed but NOT very long. The Release date is set to 20,October 2010 Due to some Modifications and Adding Features to the Froyo to be customized to the Samsung Galaxy. The Update will be available on All over Europe but we do not have Info about other regions Availability for that Date".

I'd like to edge my bets towards the official but with Samsungs past track record you can't help but think the unofficial date will be more accurate.
