How do you clear the suggested words list?

menu-settings-language and keyboard-touch input-texxt input

I didn't ask to turn off the feature. I want it to remain there, but occasionally I will have typed a word that is *not* the suggested word, and pressing ENTER or SPACE will choose the selected word, and I have to go back and change the word back to what I wanted.

So I just want to know if it's possible to clear the suggested list without accepting the suggesting.

That's just for the words you added.

Quite frankly, the HTC stock keyboard sucks quite a lot. I'm using the froyo stock keyboard, and it's just so much better. I hate that the HTC keyboard keeps stopping you to add words to the dictionary when so many of them are just fragments used to edit the spelling. Also, it doesn't add spaces at the end of words when you pick them.

I assume I am using the Froyo keyboard as well, since I have Froyo preinstalled.

However, I'm still not sure what you are suggesting by directing me to the User Dictionary. I don't want to remove words that have been added to my dictionary, I simply want the suggested list to disappear from the screen without it choosing the highlighted word. Apparently I'm not explaining myself very clearly.

You are using the stock HTC keyboard, which is the default and only keyboard on the Evo out of the box. The stock froyo keyboard is taken from the Nexus One and has to be sideloaded:

I sort of understand what you want, but I've given up on the HTC keyboard and stuff like that is one of the reasons why I don't use it anymore. The HTC keyboard is just too aggressive with the spell checking and word suggestion. Which is especially annoying since it does neither very well.

If you don't want to sideload, you can install Vlingo and use the Vlingo keyboard. It's the stock 2.1 keyboard with button to use Vlingo for text to speech. It's missing a few features from the froyo one, but it's still better than the HTC keyboard.

Hmm, based on the looks alone, I think I prefer the keyboard I'm using (which I guess is HTC). But at any rate, what does the Froyo keyboard have to do with my issue? Is there a special key that let's you get rid of the suggestions, or are you saying that the suggestions/spell checker are a part of which keyboard you're using?

The HTC keyboard forces you to either use a suggested word or use the word you typed but you have to put it in the dictionary. This is really annoying when I'm just trying to edit a spelling or something, and I end up will all sorts of crap in the word library.

With stock Android, you can pick the word you type, but if you want it in your library, you have to tap it again. But here's the thing:

With HTC, when you type a few letters, the suggested word pops up, and if you hit space bar, it will automatically put that word in. If you tap to choose the word you want, it puts that word in and then you have to hit the space bar to go to the next word. This is terrificly clunky. And slow. It's basically normal keyboard typing except you have to go out of your way to tap on words.

After you tap to select the word in Android, it auto spaces. If you enter punctuation, it backs up and puts it in right after the last word and then adds a space. The only time you have to hit the space bar is after the end of a sentence, and then just once since there's already a space there. Okay, maybe that doesn't sound like a big deal to you. But what this does is fundamentally change the way you type.

With HTC, it's basically like typing on a keyboard only with a lot more errors. My concentration is on the keyboard, and I have to break it to fight with the word suggestion. The constant interruptions are wearying.

With Android, it's more like you're searching for words and then choosing the word you were looking for. So it's not like typing, it more like searching. And, typical of Google, the Android keyboard excels at it. If you start typing a name from your contacts, it's comes right up. Lots of tech terms and non-standard words I use are right in the dictionary. My concentration is on the words that are coming up, not the letters I'm typing. And as a result, it's so much more accurate. In fact, I never go back to fix my typos because there aren't any. It's just much more satisfying and less fatiguing to write this way. I actually wish my PC could do this.

Sounds useful, but I find the auto-corrections of HTC very helpful. I can type extremely quickly and even with mistakes, the final product is exactly what I wanted to say. It's just that one case of using my own word (and not having the word added to the dictionary!). I guess there's nothing I can do about it.

I think what you are asking is how do you use the word as you are typing it instead of the suggested words, without having the phone add that word to you user dictionary. I find if while I am typing and my word is abbreviated or something and there is a list of suggested words, the word I am typing is the first one on the far left, if I use the arrow keys at the right of the keyboard to move the hightligted word to be the one I am typing and then hit the space bar, it does not add it to the dictionary. Try that and see how it works.

Hmm, a quick test of that worked. I'll keep trying it and see if that solves my problem. But sometimes I just want the suggested list to disappear without making a selection. Maybe this amounts to the same thing, just with a few more key presses.
