Got (2) Captivates in the house, and (2) iPhone 4's.

My Cappy is OK - has the normal issues, as does my son's.
Now though, his REFUSES to connect to ANY sort of mobile data.
No EDGE, no 3G, nothing.

Only data he can get, is turning on WiFi.

Swapped SIM at AT&T store (I was on the way there already) as we had a SIM issue Sunday, powered off and back on...

Anyone run into this?

Granted, AT&T is a bit weak at my house, but never had this happen.
Might have to take his back for a swap tomorrow, but all the stores AND online are out of screen protectors!

When we popped in the SIM, he removed the battery, popped it in, inserted battery, closed 'er up, powered up, nothing. Just the GSM bars - no Edge, no 3G. Mine was 12 inches away, 3G, and 2-3 bars GSM.

Did airplane mode on then off, nothing.
Tried a power-off, then power-on, nothing.

That was at around 6 hours ago.

Last I spoke with him about it about 30min ago, nothing.
Of course, he's left it at WiFi.

He brought it to me, and I turned off WiFi, did airplane mode on and off, same deal.
No mobile network data whatsoever.

Strange...

Inter: Seems kinda' unique - haven't read any complaints about something like this.
Oh, and FYI, his is virgin - no root, no mods, just apps. LauncherPro Plus, and Fancy Widgets.

That's the next thing I might be looking at - I did ask him if he had installed any network-centric apps, and he said he didn't think so. He's mostly into games, ringtones, ringdroid-type-things...

If I were in your boots, sir, I would just return the phone for an exchange. Sadly, Samsung's quality control seems to be pretty poor. A lot of people have had success with exchanging their Captivate for a new one. I have an initial run phone, and it has been great for me...but sadly it seems as though I am a part of the minority.

i had this happen once with another of my phones about 6 months ago. i had to get in the car and drive away from the cell tower nearest my house then turn it off and turn it on so that it could connect to the other tower. tech support had never run into this before but until i did that i couldn't get it to cnnect thru 3g or edge at all. it kept saying no service. but my wifes phone was fine the whole time. not sure if this is same problem but sounds similar.

Yes it has but I put some of the blame there on the carriers. They are the ones that demanded that Samsung make a handset for them that are all different. I know I would hate to have to deal with the logistics of that.

Maybe he got some kind of app/widget and turned it off by mistake. Juice defender has the an ability to turn days on and off so check for anything that may have the same capabilities.

you could also try downloading switchpro widget from the market. It has a switch to turn the data connection on and off. It isn't free but if it works it would be worth the money (is a nice widget too) and if it doesn't and you don't want to keep it for the new phone you could get a refund.

I just received my captivate from ATT 2 days ago, and out of the box I have been unable to connect to any type of data network except WiFi.

Do i need to just go exchange the phone for a different one?

Ive tried everything i can think of and everything others can think of.

Could this possibly be a baseband issue?
Maybe a bug in the firmware?

I am interested to know what is causing this.

I just upgraded (or so i thought) from my G1 with CM6, and i must say im very much in love... and would hate to have to bail on it over such a small but pesky problem it seems.

Any help is appreciated.

It may not be the phone, could possibly be the new sim card, or the new sim wasn't provisioned or activated correctly.

If I were you I would do the following.

Do a factory reset, put the phone back to factory original condition, see what happens.

If still nothing, call your carrier, make sure everything with the new sim card is okay on their end.

I would try those options first, maybe the store employee goofed the sim.

Keep in mind that only a small minority of Captivate users actually follow this forum, and of that small number, only the ones with problems interact on the forum. So, you're last sentence is without any real basis.
