Help Hard button functions via screen option?

I'm curious if there's an existing app that offers the same functionality as the default stock options that the hard buttons do.

I'd prefer on-screen icons to 'click' for the

MENU | HOME | BACK | SEARCH

selections that the hard-buttons offer. Do any of the home replacement apps do this? Again, I am not interested in reassigning what the buttons currently do, but looking for any on-screen options instead.

I am interested in this as well. Specifically, I am concerned about abusing the back key. I have seen too many calculator key pads gone south and unless the design has improved significantly, I can see the back key suffering the same fate.

"The design"?

What design?

There are probably a hundred different key designs.

What do you think gets used more, your "back" key, or the "e" key on a secretary's keyboard who types for 8 hours/day? What about a pro photographer's camera? I've taken about 15k pictures in the past two years and I'm not even a pro.

Of course, we have no way of knowing the lifespan of this key, but I'm just pointing out that there are LOTS of very hardy, long-lifespan key designs. Having seen some cheap calculator keys fail isn't reason to panic about this one.

Do you remember those old TI calculators? That's what I had in mind. The buttons used to register multiple times with a single depression.

And there is no panic. Just researching.

Yep, I know exactly what you're referring to, I'm just pointing out that there's no reason in the world to expect that the old TI calculators use the same button design, materials and manufacturing tolerances as this phone...

I know this thread is old but it is one of the few that came up when I was trying to find an app to put the hard buttons on the screen. I was looking for a different reason, to have silent buttons that wouldn't disturb my wife if she's trying to sleep. Anyway, I found a solution today that works very well, it's called Button Savior in the market. The pro version is $1 and lets you rearrange the order of the buttons on the screen. They can be put on the left or right side, but not the bottom of the screen, and hide when you don't need them. The free version is good enough unless you need to change the order. Nice app!
I am not affiliated with the dev, just a user happy to find a solution to a problem.

AWESOME! Coming from a Dinc I am very used to the soft buttons and dislike the hard physical button. This app is just what I wanted although i wish they could be at the bottom of the screen.

@Xush you are right, you have to be rooted to use it. I didn't realize it till you mentioned it. With z4root, rooting was so easy and gave me more control over my phone, I wish I had done it a year ago instead of last month. Button Savior being only for rooted phones is just one more reason to root, cause there isn't any other solution if you'd like to have soft buttons on your screen.

Button Savior was the only one I found that could do this, but I thought you had to be rooted to use it?

Download it and try it anyways. I just got a New replacement phone today and I haven't rooted this one yet but when my google account loaded my apps it installed Button Savior and its working with out root. Maybe it will work for you too.
