Root Warning: ROMs are a lifestyle

I wish I had realized this before I rooted and flashed a ROM.

I've made my shitty phone even shittier and I don't have time to deal with it.

I don't need another hobby, I just need a smartphone that does what I want it to do, when I want it done without freezing every 10 minutes, or force closing critical functions like text messaging or calling people when I don't want to call them.

I've gone down rabbit holes like this before and found them successful.
This one so far has not been and I'm not too confident that it will be.

It's cool that people obviously put tons of time into making all of these different operating systems for a soon-to-be unsupported product, but I just want stability, decent speed and support my favorite apps. If it weren't for the fact that Apple are such Nazis with their app store, I would be regretting the decision to go Android right now.

I guess I make this post for two reasons:

1) If I can save one casual user who thinks their going to spend a couple hours making their phone awesome by rooting it from making the same mistake that I did, then this is worth my time.

2) If someone knows a -simple- way to get out of this mess, then that would be awesome. But I've looked at the "going back to factory" guide and it looks like an all day project with tons of headaches and all of the "I'd like a stable ROM" threads seem to play fast and loose with the term "stable".

You do realize that something that Ivan's or Plain Jane is identical to the Stock OTA? Most users don't encounter force closes right out of the box. What rom are you running and did you wipe both data and the dalvik cache before flashing?

you obviously did something wrong during the flashing part. if your getting constant Fc's then the you didn't wipe (data and dalvik) or your hone has hardware issues and needs to be replaced.

warning other people to not root is not fair based on your limited experience.

I agree you must have done something wrong. There's plenty of stable ROM's out now-a-days, you should not be having these issues. I'd suggest wiping everything and reflashing the ROM you'd like

Give us a little more info on what ROM you're running, the process you used, etc, and maybe we can help you get things working properly.

Rooting your phone doesn't HAVE TO become an everyday hobby. There's plenty of perfectly stable, fast, fully capable roms out right now.

Most likely you didn't do something quite right. As others mentioned, you may not have wiped your data and dalvik cache before installing a ROM.

This is clearly someone who did not do their research. Also, regarding the "unroot" process... that is not an all-day process. There is an official Verizon RUU .exe file, which you run from your computer (with the phone plugged in) and it's equivalent to having Verizon reset your phone.

You've made one post since joining and it's this one, complaining about rooting.

Obviously you haven't bothered asking the plethora of members that are knowledgeable and kind enough to help people that are in over their heads (as you seem to be). No offence, but some people aren't tech savvy and others just jump into things before studying up on them well enough (I won't make the assumption of which one you are).

But instead of going on a rant without giving any major details, why don't you let everyone know what ROM you flashed, anything else you might have flashed after the fact, and a nice list of any bugs you've encountered.

Personally, I had more accidental dials with stock and their smart idea of sending you back to call log after a call and having the unlock swipe as a downward motion and the phone unlocking every time I put it in my pocket top end first, screen towards my leg.

Anyway, give them some info and I'm sure they'll get you straighten out.

X2 My first flasj was Ivans rom, and it gave me everything I wanted. My phone has been more stable, faster, and I got the extra features I wanted. I would love Froyo, but from the reading, I couldn't live with the issues it still has on the Eris.

It took me a few hours for rooting, flashing the rom, and reinstalling all my apps. I have not touched it since.

X2 on research, I researched for well over a month before I did ... anything.

The lag combined with the end call going to the call log had me constantly calling the wrong person when I would immediately call another person after ending a call.

I use a horizontal holster and never had the unlock issue thing, however I have had my phone randomly turn off if I put it on my pocket instead of the holster.

I have used xtrROM and is has been very fast and not one force close. I love it. No sense, but I am surprisingly fine with that. Didn't know if I would be.

Well, root isn't for everyone, but there sure is a good crew of people here with a lot of experience for anybody who is looking for advice, encouragement, and help. I'm sorry that it didn't work for the OP, but surely the OP is entitled to his opinion.

As for Apple and their app store, all I can say that it can be incredibly frustrating to search the Android market for apps, too. And considering that Android is a Google OS, and their core competency is supposed to be search, the Android market can be an exercise in frustration of paging through lists of home file themes, custom keyboards, and ringtone sets. Try looking for power control plus, it's a paid app for $2 but controls damn near anything, including airplane mode. I'm running 2.2 though so I'm not 100% sure it's on 2.1

Get a Blackberry. They truly are all business and no fun (I don't care what the new commercials say). All of the "smartphone features" work incredibly well.

I would be willing to bet that if you went over to the crackberry forums, you could find a member that would be willing to swap you a BB Tour or even an 8530 for your Eris.

Several members here helped me in many different ways, not to mention, I read through everything before I started. When I did have a little trouble, help was here. You can do it, No Problem! By the way, I am running PlainJane T2 with no problems!

I'm going to have to side with wyzird on this one, I'm a 20 year old man who works 80 hours a week at two jobs, I currently am running xtrROM4.2 with no problems whatsoever, I was helped tremendously by the other people on this forum. I've ran several different ROMs in about the three month period my phone has been rooted. I currently spend about twenty minutes a day looking for upgrades to the ROM i am currently using, and about half an hour a week flashing my phone and resetting it when a full wipe upgrade comes around. If you do things the way they are supposed to be done, fully research what you are doing, and then when you need help simply ask for it, there should never be a problem. Like everyone else has said, there are ROMs for everyone, something always fits into your lifestyle, the longest part of the process should be getting it to run, not going crazy cuz you got it to run and now its a pain in the ass.

Don't go knocking down the doors of people who work their ass off to get these things out to laymen like me when to be honest, rooting my phone has been the greatest thing i've done since i got my eris.

I wouldn't say it takes hours to root, only a few minutes, but you need to do a lot a research and READING. I agree there are some great people on this forum and willing to help. They helped my newbie but. I am also using Plain Jane T2, no problems whatsoever. When I read the first post I felt the same way. Kinda intimidating at first. Hang in there people are willing to help.

Eris 1981, I've been running a few Froyo Roms and have found Kaos V34 to be very stable (it's on 35 now, but I found 34 better) and what I've been running on for the past week and half is Tazz's V6 "The Sabbath" and, most recently V7 "Blackened".

Tazz just released V8 last night in a vanilla format, but I'm loving V7, finding a couple little hiccups but nothing earth shattering, nothing that kills your phone constantly or causes major FC's.

If you want to try Froyo I highly recommend Tazz's ROM's, just nand back up what you're using now for 2.1 and flash a 2.2, if you don't like it you can always go back.

I know there is something about 2.2 not working w/partitioned SD cards, so if your card is then you'll have to change that (can even get a new SD card just for Froyo, lots of people do that).

Not having sense is a bit different, but I'm using Launcher Pro and it's really great, add Beautiful Widgets to that for weather and clock (great skins!) and I'm having a great time w/my Eris now.

The folks on xda-developers.com are great too.

I actually had a friend stop by with an Eris running Nonsensikal 7.0 and I played with it. Not having Sense was different, but not a deal breaker. I flashed the Nonsensikal 7 2.2 Black Rom right after he left.

I am liking it so far! I have not had any issues yet other then I had to change settings that were in different spots then I was used to - or didn't have before.

I love my Eris. Just upgraded to Tazz Froyo Vanilla 8.0 and it is pretty damn near perfect. Fast, stable.
