Thank you for your email regarding your HTC Desire phone.
Further to our conversation today. Once again please accept my apologies that we are unable to provide a date for the release.
Please find below the link discussed to our website on a PC where you are able to check in the future if an update from us has been released.

I have also supplied below the required steps that you will need to take in order to organise an update to your phone. Be advised to follow the on-screen instructions as it will give you necessary and required information regarding your phone.
"your phone's features" > "download software updates" > "how do I download the latest software update" > "HTC Desire update"
When a new update is made available by a handset manufacturer they will pass a version of this to us so that we can run the required tests to confirm that this update they have released will co-exist with the branding that you are required to use on your phone.
It is possible that the new update that is released may not co-exist with our branding and thus we will not be able to release the update for the HTC Desire, if they can not co-exist and we were to release this to your phone, this could effectively be detrimental to your handset and we will not process for this reason.
If the update version can not co-exist with our branding then we will wait for HTC to release a new update to which we will restart the testing process accordingly.
Be aware that it is not possible to advise of any estimated timescale for the testing of this update by our technical department, furthermore, we can not guarantee that an update will be released at all regarding the HTC Desire as the updates that could be released may never work alongside our branding on the phone.
Because some of this information is speculative and based on situations regarding the testing of updates that may or may not ever be released by HTC and the time it takes to complete the testing of the new updates, please accept my sincere apologies that we can not be more specific regarding your query.
Once again I am sorry that I have been unable to provide a definite date at this time.

What makes large organisations think that it is OK to do this. If I costantly moved my dates, my business would collapse. I'm sure if any of you guys decided to move your bosses "deadlines" I'm sure it wouldn't be long before you were sacked. It's a shambles!!

im on orange, but got phone from CPW, so its unbranded, i had 2.2 when it was released and no issues, so why cant orange just perform a release? especially when its been about now for weeks on thousands of htc desires already ?

Just 4 questions for you then:
1. Did you have to buy an unlock code? If so, how much was it?
2. Did you follow any particular debranding guide? (Link if possible).
3. Did you buy a new micro-SD card or just use the one provided with the phone?
4. Any problems with e.g. wifi or the radio after debranding?

That is the one that worked for me.

No need to unlock if you dont want to, though it will make it easier if you plan on using other networks in the future at all...

One thing though. ALWAYS use the gold card, just keep it in there. That way all updates should work.

One other thing. At one point when you are updating (I think after the 2nd update from the ROM they link, it says that you have locked your phone because the sim card is wrong. Dont worry, take the sim card out, updat again then put it back in and just keep updating till its got none left.

Made the original SD card supplied with the phone into a Goldcard, and left it in there so it will work for the subsequent updates. No problems with this.

Needed an unlock code, first got the 'Network Locked' message so went to mobile unlocked (UK site) and got the code in about 10 mins.

I de-branded my Orange SIM-locked HTC Desire today and upgraded to Android 2.2 with no problems whatsoever. WiFi still works, SIM remained locked to Orange and I can still make calls etc. After flashing the new HTC FroYo ROM, I checked for updates on the handset and there was one. I installed that too and that was fine.
All the info you require is on this excellent forum somewhere. I was concerned at first that I might 'brick' my phone (through my own incompetence) but followed the instructions to the letter and all went smoothly.
My advice is to go for it!

I also debranded my Orange sim locked phone with the help from here, http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html all went easy, sim didnt lock and a couple of days later I received the OTA from HTC.

Seriously, debranding is so easy. I highly recommend it as you get no bloatware at all and access to wireless hotspot function which Orange will most likely disable. Also Froyo is really nice - little touches here and there just make the phone seem more complete.

If you remove the SIM card and leave it out throughout the whole procedure you wont get a SIM lock so no need to spend money on a code.
I made the goldcard using the SD Card I already had in the phone - this way you dont need to swap them around for updates etc.
Someone above described the process hanging in the reboot screen - at this point the RUU programme will say it cannot connect to the Android phone "Erro 171" and your phone will have the HTC logo on it. Dont worry here - leave your phone on that screen (do not unplug or pull battery) just run the RUU again and it should work. Once the stock 2.1 ROM is loaded - (keeping the SIM out) - check for software updates and you should be able to update to 2.1update 1. Then do software check again and you should have the latest version of Froyo. Then turn off, put your SIM in, power it up and Bob's your uncle!
So apart from the bootloader error - it was a really easy process. Keep your SIM out and you should have no lock problems. I really encourage people to do it - it makes the phone quicker, nicer looking (no bloatware) and all the little 2.2 touches which make it a pleasure to use!

Roll the calender forward 1 month on my phone, and check for updates. They assure me that the update will be there. Unfortunately I cannot try it at the moment, as I am at work and do not have a Wi-fi connection, but I will try tonight. If anyone has a go please let others know if this works.

Just tried it here (had to disable automatic date & time) and it didn't work - as expected. Also even though I disabled automatic date & time the date still reset itself to the correct one.

Could this be Orange saying it will be available at the end of October now?

I think the person you spoke to at Orange is taking the piss.

Seems you need to turn WiFi off to stop the clock automatically resetting itself (at least I had to, even though I'd switched off Automatically set the time in the clock settings).

I've just tried this from work, and it now tells me there is a system update available, but only after I had disabled auto date/time setting and set the date 2 months forward.

I'll try downloading the update at home later when I can use my own broadband connection - it's an 85-odd MB download, so no way am I doing that over the air.

Edit: I mean plugged in/USB internet sharing, rather than over WiFi.

This is not some Knob taking the piss, this is what I was told by a Team Leader in Orange customer service, which I was directed to do by the Executive Office at Orange. Don't shoot the messenger, if it had have worked I wouldn't have been such a knob then!!!!!!
