Navigation instructions over bluetooth

I have an HTC Desire, just upgraded to 2.2 (seems a bit slower) and I would like to have the navigation instructions routed through bluetooth to come through the car stereo speakers. Now I know this can be done with A2DP but I was wondering if it can be made to work over HFP?

Over A2DP it works but it means you cannot listen to any of the in-car sourses like CD or radio as you have to have it permanently switched to bluetooth audio to hear the instructions. If it was over HFP, the car stereo would mute whatever source you were listening to so it could play the navigation instruction.

Is there a way to make this work, or an app to download?

Not sure why this was moved to the Desire specific forum. Surely it is a question applicable to all android devices?

Not all android devices are the same. What is true on 1 android device may be different on another as the manufacturer often adds their own tweaks and support etc afterwards.

Well I use AD2P to my head unit for music streaming, if I ever have the navigation instruction volume up (I don't because the voice does my head in) it cuts in to the music, tells me the instruction then goes back to the music - simples

Thats fine if you only use your phone as a music source, but I never do. I only ever use my car stereo.

I kind of see your point, but with no loss in sound quality (well for me) and the sheer ease of adding/updating/syncing music from several places why would you want to stick to your stereo?

I'm not being confrontational I am genuinely interested! in your reason for sticking!

Nah don't worry about it, I don't see the point in getting worked up on forums.

I like using the car stereo because I have a 120gb HD hooked up with all my music on it. I just cannot get that kind of capacity with the Desire. Also I like to get in the car and have music start without me doing anything or having to get my phone out of my pocket, plug it into the car charger etc. I also listen to the radio a lot and the Desire won't do that without a headset plugged in for an antenna. Plus a few other reasons, easier for passengers to use the car stereo, etc.

For me its just easier to use the car stereo. When a call comes in the phone can be in my bag or pocket, I can make calls direct from my head unit and the only time I ever have to get the phone out and start fiddling is if I want to use the satnav.

All I want is for the satnav instructions to mute the car stereo, and the answer would seem to be for the instructions to be sent over the bluetooth headset profile.

It must be possible, because mine does it, but only when I am on a call, which is very annoying as the guidance drowns out the incoming call, the volume is loud enough for the guidance through the phone speaker, so personally I would prefer it to only work through that for guidance.
